Chapter 357: The Dim Yellow Road
After resting for a night, stocking up on supplies, eating and drinking in the morning, the two sorted their luggage and set off from the northeast gate.
Menethil Harbor is actually a small island, connected to the mainland by a long stone bridge. After crossing the bridge, a long dirt road extends into a vast white mist.
Jesse remembered that in the game, this road was paved with stones, but now it’s clearly not. After all, Menethil Harbor is still just a temporary military port built after the war, the infrastructure hasn’t reached this area yet.
Just as the "elf" mage mentioned earlier, they occasionally encountered Bronzebeard cavalry riding goats along the road.
These goats were much taller than Jesse’s impression of goats, but still shorter than horses, which suits the height of dwarfs perfectly for riding.
What really stood out to Jesse were the strong and furry goats with horns that looked like sturdy helmets.
Unlike the Wildhammer clan, the Bronzebeard Dwarves prefer heavy metal armor and shields that can support a strong dwarf weighing around 80 to 90 kilograms, along with similarly heavy armor and weapons. They need to be sturdy to handle all that weight.
"Can we ride these goats up to Khaz Mountain?" Jesse asked curiously.
"We should be able to," Greed glanced south and said, "But while the goats can handle it, the two of us might not be able to endure the dangerous cliffs on the snowy mountain."
"And even if we cross this mountain range to reach Dun Morogh, we still have to head east towards Loch Lake, which means a long journey through the mountains. Don’t forget, it’s the snowy path of Khaz Mountain."
Jesse followed Greed’s gaze but the misty view revealed nothing clearly.
"However, I believe some dwarves have definitely tried it," Greed nodded and said, "But it probably wasn’t easy, otherwise they would have improved the road long ago if it was easier to travel."
By noon, the fog had cleared a bit, revealing the vast wetlands to the north that seemed endless.
Looking out, he couldn’t tell the ground from the marsh, the stream from the puddle. It was all a vast expanse of dark green disappearing into the distance, with a thin mist drifting over the plants like a mystical realm.
But it was strange that even after walking for a long time in the swamp, he didn’t see any living creatures.
Not even creatures like Gnolls, Murlocs, or crocodiles that exist in the game were in the swamp. There were no Mire Beasts staggering in the swamp, nor any birds landing on the grass or water, just flying high above.
Overall, this place definitely didn’t seem as peaceful as it looked.
In the evening, the two arrived at a relatively wide clearing with stone braziers built by dwarves, perfect for resting. By midnight, two Bronzebeard Dwarf travelers even joined them.
However, the two Bronzebeards seemed quite cautious around Jesse and Greed. They exchanged simple greetings and each went to sleep separately. Jesse had wanted to ask about the road ahead, but seeing that they weren’t very willing to talk, he gave up.
That night, Jesse practiced a dimmer version of Mage Armor copied from Malin’s book. The next morning, after eating some bread and jerky, the two set off again.
As they walked, even the dirt path beneath their feet seemed less clear.
The river channels here were complex and intertwined. When passing by one riverbank, Jesse unconsciously glanced at the dark river surface buried under tall grass beneath his feet.
With just one look, he felt as though there were eyes watching him from the river.
He blinked, looked again, and the eyes were gone.
"Are there crocodiles in the water here?" he asked Greed, who was walking ahead.
"There are few crocodiles in this area, more near Menethil Harbor, and also along the road south towards Dun Algaz," Greed said. "Are you afraid of crocodiles coming out to bite you?"
"I felt like something was watching me in the water just now," Jesse said. "Could there be something poisonous here, like spitting mushrooms or hallucinogenic spores, causing me to have illusions?"
"Your imagination is too vivid," Greed chuckled and said, "But still, stay away from the water. Even if there are no crocodiles, there might be Murlocs, or crazy Rockfin fish that can jump onto land to bite people, frogs with mouths bigger than my face, tsk tsk…"
Though it sounded simple, on this road, staying away from the water was not always possible. Sometimes you had to step over puddles, or cross a wooden bridge. Peering underneath the bridge would reveal dark, deep pools where the bottom was impossible to see.
By the evening of the third day, the weather was sultry and the sky was dim and yellow. After days of trudging through the damp, hot swamp, Jesse and Greed were both quite exhausted.
"It wasn’t this hot when I last came here, to be honest," Greed said, sitting on the remains of a collapsed stone seat near the firepit. "What time of year is it now, May?"
"It’s getting close," Jesse replied. "It’s probably late April, I didn’t pay much attention to the date, but definitely almost May."
"It’s so hot that it’s driving me crazy," Greed said as he took a sip of water, "Didn’t you mention earlier that you brought a bag of special cooling medicine or drink? Can I try it?"
Jesse replied, "That’s meant for when we go to the desert. It’s not unbearable hot yet, right? We only have one bag, so let’s save it for later."
Greed nodded and looked at Jesse, then asked, "Aren’t you a magician? Can’t you do something to cool us down, like summoning a snowstorm?"
"Funny you should mention that, Greed," Jesse replied. "I just learned a spell that can summon ice and cold water. Let me try it."
Greed asked, "What do you mean ‘let me try’? Do you know how to do it or not?"
Jesse said, "Don’t distract me, let me focus." He reached out his hand and asked, "Pass me your empty water bag."
Greed handed the water bag to Jesse. Jesse glanced at him, then cast a spell on himself, saying, "Watch this!"
The dwarf eagerly watched as Jesse held the water bag, licked his lips, opened the bag, and mimicked Amy’s actions while softly chanting, "Ward, Tika, Celtic!"
The water bag burst open with a light blue Arcane flame shooting up and burning the bag into pieces. Jesse stood there, still in his original posture, while his hand holding the bag turned into a deep purple arcane energy that had turned into powder.
Greed was puzzled for a moment, then he said, "It looks impressive, but when will the ice cubes come out?"
"Maybe," Jesse slowly turned to him and said, "They won’t come out anymore!"
Greed hesitantly asked, "What kind of magic is this?"
"This is… a failed magic," Jesse said.
Greed gritted his teeth and said, "My water pouch!"
"You still have several others…"
"How did Wizard’s Sanctum make you become an apprentice mage?"
"I… being an apprentice mage doesn’t necessarily mean learning how to do water spells…"
"Is this a water spell?"
"Hmm…"
