Chapter 355: Misty Harbor
The journey from Stormwind Harbor to Menethil Harbor is generally calmer than crossing the Palatine Gulf or heading south to Booty Bay.
After all, this route offers a view of land from start to finish, with no rough winds and waves, just occasional light rain due to the season.
After a smooth sailing for eight days, Jesse heard the captain shout on the deck that Menethil Harbor was just ahead.
Greed rubbed his eyes and sighed, saying, "I can’t seem to sleep well onboard, feels like I haven’t slept properly for a week."
"Your snoring is louder than someone getting hit on the head with a hammer," Jesse said sharply. "I’m the one who hasn’t slept for a week."
"Nonsense," the dwarf scoffed. "Our neighbors have been living next door, why haven’t they complained to me these past few days?"
Jesse patted Greed on the shoulder, punched his rock-solid belly, tugged at his black beard, and said, "Look at you, who would dare complain about snoring to a monster like you? Not finding you uncomfortable for a week, and if they do find you, they might end up feeding the fish in the sea."
"Nonsense again, I have always been very friendly and peaceful towards humans."
Greed put on his new leather jacket. However, no matter how new the clothes were, they looked worn after being in the sea for eight days. The two people went out and arrived on the deck, where nothing could be seen clearly in the vast whiteness of the sea, not even the land that was visible before.
"Is this normal?" Jesse asked.
"Yes," Greed said. "It was like this last time I came here. This means we are almost at Menethil Harbor."
"By the way, Jesse, have you heard about the ghost ship in the fog… it’s when people sailing on the sea suddenly find themselves surrounded by fog, and then a large black ship without crew appears out of nowhere…"
"Okay, okay, you can stop now," Jesse took a deep breath and said. "It’s one thing to hear stories from others, but when you say it, it feels like it’s about to become real."
Around noon, the two of them saw a faint white and blue light source in the distance at a high place, and Greed could sense the magic contained within. Was it an Arcane lighthouse?
When the ship docked, Jesse scanned the entire harbor. Menethil Harbor was small in size, not as big as Southshore, where its entirety could be seen at a glance.
However, unlike Southshore, the side of the harbor facing the land was surrounded by thick, high walls. In the middle, there was an unfinished fortress. Inside the walls, humans and dwarves lived together in stone houses and wooden buildings of dwarf style, crowded with soldiers, workers, and sailors everywhere.
When Jesse was young, this place was not called Menethil Harbor, it was just a dwarf fishing village whose name he didn’t know.
During the Orc War, the tribe’s army invaded this place and temporarily used it as a port for their northern attack. When the Alliance army counterattacked, they took over this place, dismantled the Orc’s facilities, and turned it into a military port.
Even now, several years later, Jesse can still see some leftover wood and canvas from the demolished Orc buildings stacked at the base of the city walls, reminding him of the Shattered Hand Orc hideout that flashed in Gorefiend’s dream.
Jesse focused and used Detect Demon to scan around, but he didn’t see any shadow.
When he arrived at Menethil Harbor this time, he ultimately decided not to bring any demon servant, including the imp, and could leave it to Molofeel for company.
After all, he was about to enter the Titan ruins, and the Pantheon built these temples to protect Azeroth from demons and void creatures. Who knows what chaos bringing a demon inside could cause? It was better to prioritize completing Greed’s trial.
Although there was a section of the city wall unfinished, the inn tavern here was already beautifully built. After getting off the ship, Greed hurriedly headed towards the inn confidently.
In Jesse’s memory, the inn in Menethil Harbor in the game was a quite famous place. After all, it had become a key transit point connecting the north and south and two continents. However, he couldn’t recall the inn’s name no matter what. But seeing the temporary bilingual Dwarven sign hung at the inn’s entrance immediately triggered his memories.
Deepwater Inn.
Ah… that’s the name.
When he was level 60 playing the League, his Hearthstone was always bound to this inn, making it convenient whether he was taking a gryphon to the blazing gorge in the south ready to enter Blackrock Spire, or taking a boat to the Black Dragon Lair in Kalimdor.
Following Greed into the inn, a relaxed drumbeat was heard. Jesse looked towards the source of the sound and saw a group of dwarves and Lordaeron human soldiers in white tank tops crowded together, with the dwarves tapping on tables, as if setting a rhythm for the human with a flute and other dwarves with a harp.
Jesse sat by the window with Greed, waiting for the sommelier to finish and come over.
Greed greeted a few dwarves nearby. Jesse asked, "Do you know them?"
"Do you have to know them to say hello?" Greed smiled and said, "Most people here are old folks who have participated in the Orc War, Jesse, including me, so we are all comrades!"
At that moment, the golden-bearded dwarf behind Greed raised his glass and shouted, "For the Alliance, mage!"
"For the Alliance," Jesse nodded in response.
He looked at Greed and whispered, "Unfortunately, I was still a kid during the Orc War."
Greed reached out, patting Jesse’s neck, saying, "You damn well killed Teron Gorefiend!"
Jesse reached out his hand and said, "Shhh…"
Just then, a familiar melody came from the corner of the tavern.
The human soldier picked up a flute and played music with the dwarf holding a lyre. This melody… Jesse knew it too well.
Every time before their adventure, his character would arrive early at the inn, waiting for the group to gather before departure. During this waiting time, this melody always played.
Although there were some differences in details and the instruments used were not the same, and these people’s rhythm was much slower than the background music in the game, probably because they were not very skilled yet. But Jesse was sure it was the same tune.
Greed looked at Jesse with a curious expression and asked, "Have you heard this tune before?"
Jesse nodded and asked, "Do you know what it’s called?"
Greed replied, "This place was called Deepwater Village before the Orcs arrived, Jesse. This tune doesn’t have a special name, you can call it the Song of Deepwater Bay."
"Deepwater Bay," Jesse repeated, "So, does this inn have any special food?"
"Fish, all kinds of fish," Greed said. "And a special tasting dwarf wine…"
Lowering his voice, he whispered, "But nothing can compare to the great Thelsamar, I’ll tell you, Jesse Seso, once you reach Thelsamar… you’ll realize your first twenty years were a waste."
"I haven’t even lived for twenty years yet," Jesse said. "But hearing you say that, I can’t wait to get to Thelsamar soon."
