Chapter 339: Amateur Archaeology Plan
"If we’re going there, we’ll have to deal with the Dark Iron Dwarves," Greed nodded.
Jesse knew that compared to the dangers lurking deep within Uldaman, the Dark Iron Dwarves excavating outside were nothing significant.
Even though it may be smaller in scale, it is a true Titan temple ruins, with ancient Guardians hidden in its deepest layers behind sealed stone doors.
Perhaps weakened and stripped of its original power due to countless years of being sealed, Jesse had no idea in what state he might be now.
But considering that dwarfs can find ancestral connections through the remnants of Loch Modan and Dun Morogh, Greed may not necessarily need to go all the way inside, open the Titan’s seal, and face the Guardian himself.
"Not only is this the most recent," Jesse said, "but even if both of us can find the temple ruins that Bronzebeard and Dark Iron archaeologists haven’t found, we can’t excavate a passage leading inside. The Dark Iron Dwarves have paved the way for us."
The dwarf raised an eyebrow and asked, "Are you going too?"
Hearing this, Jesse asked in surprise, "Did you never consider me from the beginning?"
"Of course I hope you’re willing to help me," Greed said, "but I don’t know if it will still work if someone else gets involved. I intend to go alone."
"Do ancestors have to verify the number of people when you enter that ancient ruins?" Jesse asked. "If there’s more than one person, they might block you outside or refuse to acknowledge you."
"Who can say for sure," Greed scratched his beard and said. "I’m afraid I might do something wrong, not match those ancient legends, fail to find any connections, and end up failing."
"It’s better than dying inside," Jesse said.
"Dying?" Greed said. "I wasn’t afraid at all when I encountered an ambush by two crocodiles in the Wetlands, just a few dwarfs… can a few Dark Iron Dwarves put together twelve legs?"
"Will the crocodile shoot at your head with a gun?" asked Jesse.
"Do you think I won’t shoot their heads?" Greed patted his waist and glanced at the empty belt buckle, saying, "Even though I’m not carrying it, you know what I mean."
"Can your hammer shoot bullets fast?" Jesse asked.
Greed leaned back in his chair, sighed, and said, "So what do we do? Should I bring a gun too? One gunshot can attract dozens of people, and we’ll end up having a shootout with multiple guns?"
"I still have some Invisibility Potion," Jesse said. "I used it in Burning Steppes before, and it made everything invisible, which was pretty handy."
Greed sighed and shrugged, saying, "I know about Invisibility Potion. Maybe those Dark Iron Dwarves wouldn’t have found me originally. I might have accidentally bumped into them after running around while invisible. It’s better for me to handle it myself."
"So you need to cooperate," Jesse said. "I’ll help you evade the Dark Iron Dwarves and get into that excavation site. If you find the relic, you can deal with it yourself. I’ll keep watch outside. But I must remind you, the ruins of the temple might be even more dangerous than outside."
"It’s not just a maybe," Greed said. "It’s certain. But this is part of the trial. Those excavation sites were dangerous before being developed. So the more dangerous it is, the more it shows that I’ve found the right place."
Even though he said that, Jesse knew he had to follow Greed inside, at least to remind him not to go too deep. Even with seals in place, they should avoid provoking the remains of ancient "deities."
"Okay," Greed said, "So what do you want, Jesse Seso? You didn’t make any money on this trip!"
"I just don’t want you to risk your life," Jesse said as he tapped on the table.
Greed chuckled, "Then consider it a favor for now. Just call me when you need help next time, no matter what the task."
"Sounds good," Jesse agreed, "And when you truly master that divine power, it will be even better for me. I’ll profit from it!"
"Of course," Greed waved his fist but then sighed as if remembering something, "It’s just that no dwarf has succeeded in so many years, especially a Bronzebeard Dwarf… I really don’t know how likely it is for me to make it to the end."
"You won’t know unless you try," Jesse said, "Also, whatever treasures we find inside, they belong to me. Deal?"
"No problem," Greed replied, "As long as you can carry them out, they’re all yours. When shall we set off?"
"I just got back from Booty Bay, only returned yesterday," Jesse explained, "Let me take a few days to rest and prepare."
"Perfect, I was planning on sleeping in for a few more days," Greed leaned back on the table, "No hurry, Jesse, we have plenty of time."
"Right." Jesse said, "I’ve learned a new thing and I wanted to practice with you."
"What new thing?" Greed asked, looking up. "Is it powerful?"
"It should be powerful," Jesse said, "But I’m not sure if it’s my method or if I don’t have enough power yet. I always feel like this magic should…"
"What magic? Tell me." Greed whispered.
Jesse nodded, saying, "It’s a shield magic. I heard it can block weapons, arrows, and spells at the same time, like a wall, not just reduce damage like Mage Armor. But the problem is, it disappears very quickly, almost as soon as I cast it. If others see me casting a shield, they will stop attacking, wait a while, and my magic will be gone."
"But even if it has a short duration, it’s quite strong. If attacked with a weapon, it can harm the attacker. So if you help me test it, be careful, maybe throw stones from far away, not a hammer."
"Why would I throw a hammer at you… but it sounds interesting," Greed asked, "Are you sure you are casting the spell correctly? Isn’t it that with magic, if one part of the spell is not right, the effect will be greatly reduced?"
Jesse had thought about this possibility, but thinking about the Shadow Magic before, even if the spell wasn’t cast perfectly, or no matter what the casting action was, the final effect wouldn’t be significantly worse.
He didn’t have much time to further develop this magic, but based on his experience with Shadow Magic, even if he perfected this protective spell, it might not last long in the end.
Increasing from one or two seconds to double the time, lasting only about three or four seconds, can’t be relied on as a continuous protection measure, not as practical as Mage Armor, which offers partial defense only.
After listening to Greed, Jesse thought for a moment and nodded, saying, "Then you can use it as a shield."
"A shield?" Jesse asked, "What does that mean?"
Greed gestured with his hands in the air a few times and said, "It means when the opponent strikes and can’t stop, you then cast a spell, and… according to what you said, if this magic can harm the attacker back, wouldn’t it make them suffer the consequences directly?"
Jesse said, "But casting spells takes time. By the time someone swings a weapon or casts a spell, I wouldn’t have time to finish casting my own spell and would already be hit."
"Then it’s a matter of practice, isn’t it?" Greed raised his arms and said, "At first, I thought communicating with the sky to summon lightning was quite troublesome, but now I can quickly establish a connection with the elements, and the elements rarely refuse my summons, Jesse."
"Even if you can’t cast the spell instantly, you can use it to deal with large monsters like Ogres or even dragons, right?"
Greed did make sense. Now Jesse could quickly release many spells that he initially found a bit bothersome, grabbing short moments to recite them, just like the dwarf mentioned.
Jesse said, "How about we go out and practice tonight?"
"No problem, and it’s been a long time since you practiced sword fighting, right?" asked Greed. "Are you feeling rusty? I think you almost forgot your sword skills from me, let’s have a practice before you try your new magic tricks."
"Did you go to Ironforge by yourself?" Jesse said. "Speaking of swords, I have a very special one now, perfect for testing."
"What kind of sword? How special is it?" the dwarf asked.
Jesse mysteriously smiled and said, "There are too many people here, I can’t show it now."
"Pretending." Greed scratched his chin and said, "Let’s grab something to eat first, I haven’t had lunch yet!"
