Chapter 336: The Gloomy Clouds of the Dark Portal
By counting the days, it should be mid-April now.
Coming down from the ship in the morning, he gazed at Stormwind Keep in the distance and the greenery of the Redridge Mountains behind it, a stark contrast to when he had just returned from Lordaeron.
After breaking free from the troubles of Deathmantle, he felt like he had endless energy.
Upon returning home, he stored away the scrolls and weapons he had taken out, looking at the battle report he had only written a few hundred words on. He deeply felt that he had no mood to do anything productive in a place like Booty Bay.
However, at least during the time on the ship, he clarified the pronunciation of the words on the scrolls with the imp and succubus and corrected many unclear parts. He planned to find a sturdy new scroll in a few days, copy the revised content onto it once again.
Changing into his usual clothes for the city, he instructed two demons to look after the house before heading to the Mage Quarter again.
Ursula happened to not be in the basement today, so he couldn’t give Mojo to her. Jesse went straight to Malin’s place, intending to first report the situation to his teacher and mention the matters of Booty Bay and some Kingdom of Stormwind refugees.
Of course, he couldn’t directly mention what he had seen in Booty Bay, so he had to say he heard rumors in Darkshire or other places, or maybe met someone who happened to return from Booty Bay. But this matter wasn’t something the mage should be concerned about, reporting it through the Wizard’s Sanctum seemed inappropriate.
But let’s talk about it anyway, he hasn’t been to Stormwind Keep yet, even getting some help from Malin to find the king would be nice.
Opening the study door, Malin was not there, instead Amy was tidying up the bookshelf.
"Master Malin is not coming today, sir, you can come tomorrow morning if you need to find him." Amy said while looking towards the door, then she suddenly stopped.
"Jesse? You’re finally back! Your father told me about your, oh my, your…"
"Amy…" Jesse said, smiling, "I am fine now."
"Are you really okay?" Amy asked, putting down what she was holding, she walked around the table to smell Jesse’s clothes, saying, "I couldn’t sense anything… but my father said only mages very sensitive to magic can feel that kind of curse."
"Before I could smell a bit." Jesse said, showing his arm, "and even more so for you, so I’m sure everything is fine now."
Amy complained, "You went out without any news at all, I didn’t know where to find you!"
"I was a bit flustered when I left, so I forgot to say goodbye to you, sorry." Jesse said.
"You know too," sighed Amy. "By the way, have you grown taller?" She stepped back a bit, looked at Jesse’s head, and said, "It seems like you’ve gotten a lot taller."
"Maybe Gorefiend’s curse sealed my height. As a descendant of General Lodon, I shouldn’t be so short," Jesse said, touching his head.
"To joke about life and death situations," Amy said disapprovingly.
"Once solved, of course we can joke about it!" laughed Jesse.
"Come, let me treat you to a meal to celebrate," Amy suggested.
"Sure, oh, by the way, did you send that letter? The one for Vereesa," Jesse asked.
"Vereesa?" Amy leaned on the table and squinted, "Are you that familiar with Lady Windrunner? Speaking of the Azuresong Mageblade… using an elven melody as the password to break the magical seal, I think she might have some feelings for you."
"Nonsense," Jesse said, "That song is related to her family, it’s none of my business."
"But the letter hasn’t been sent," Amy said, patting the table. "It’s still here!"
"Luckily the letter wasn’t sent out. What’s going on?" Jesse asked, "Did the teacher forget about this?"
"Of course not, how could he forget," Amy said. "He has been going to Master Andromath or the palace to inquire about the elves’ situation recently. But he hasn’t planned to return to Quel’Thalas or find anyone to help deliver the letter in these few weeks. Even the elves who temporarily stayed in Stormwind have quickly reinforced the Dark Portal. He is getting anxious. If you don’t return soon, he will have to contact the messengers of Dalaran."
"Elves reinforcing the Dark Portal?" Jesse asked, "Is the battle not going well?"
"Dalaran seems to be mobilizing people too. A few mages from the Wizard’s Sanctum went there the other day," Amy said. "My father didn’t tell me the reason, but the expedition is definitely not going as smoothly as expected."
Hearing this, Jesse couldn’t help but think of the strange feeling he had when staring at the Dark Portal in Redridge.
"When you see the teacher, tell him not to send this letter. I have found a solution," Jesse said.
"Alright," Amy said, "He will surely breathe a sigh of relief. Let’s go, I’ll treat you to a meal."
The two of them left and arrived at The Blue Recluse. The tavern wasn’t too crowded at the moment, with a young mage playing an unfamiliar tune on the flute at the counter.
"Do you drink wine, Jesse?" Amy asked.
"Of course you can."
"Then two glasses of Dalaran red wine from the cellar, grilled spotted yellowtail, and a pumpkin pie, also, a spicy wolf steak for this female mage," the female mage told the bartender beside the counter.
"How did you know I like grilled ribs," Jesse asked with a smile.
"Not only do I know you like it, but I also know you, this miser, hesitate to eat," Amy found an empty table nearby, sat down casually, exhaled slowly, and said, "If you ate a bit more normally, maybe you would be taller than you are now. It seems like I should take you out and feed you a few more meals while you’re still young."
"Then I will have to come here every day in the future," Jesse sat down and said, "Not only can I learn magic, but also have meat to eat."
"You also need to eat more," Amy said, "But I feel like during this time, not only have you grown taller, but you have also become stronger. Have you become more willing to spend money on yourself?"
"You must be much more affluent now than before," Jesse nodded.
After hesitating for a while, Amy said, "I know you may not want to bring it up, I know many people may have asked you this question, but I still want to know…"
"I heard from my father about your situation, Teron Gorefiend… How did you manage that? I don’t doubt you, Jesse, but for me, Teron Gorefiend is like a terrifying demon king. When I heard that Teron Gorefiend appeared on the battlefield, everyone would gasp in astonishment, thinking that it must be a tough battle. I can’t forget the expression my father had when he found out he was seen in Hillsbrad."
