Chapter 333: Death Experience
"Wake up, humans! Come out quickly!"
In the morning, hearing goblins yelling outside, Jesse opened the door and saw Miserheld in front of him, with the sun shining from the sea.
"Come try it out, quickly…" Miserheld waved and said, "Come here, let me show you my achievement! This combination of Rush Card and Noggenfogger’s old recipe is simply perfect. I can’t believe a human like you came up with it. Did that female alchemist you know secretly give you tips to help me break through? My fangirl? Or a secret admirer? It makes a lot of sense!"
"Didn’t you say you don’t care about pretty girls?" Jesse asked.
"Not caring means not letting them interrupt my research process!" Miserheld emphasized with his finger pointing, "If they can help with my experiments, why would I refuse? Am I that stubborn?"
While talking, he led Jesse to a large house behind his Alchemy Room. After Miserheld opened the door, Jesse smelled a strange and medicinal odor. Peering inside, Jesse saw iron cages arranged one after another under dim lights.
What is this… an animal testing room?
Wait, these are not animals. Jesse looked closely and saw a cage containing three Murlocs, another one with a short female Naga, and in the distance, a cage holding a black-furred Gnoll!
Jesse saw these strange things and took a step back unconsciously. Miserheld waved his hand and said, "Don’t worry, human. They all fit the Steamwheedle Cartel’s mysterious enemies list. It’s not against any rules to test them in Booty Bay. There was even a white gorilla before, but it accidentally died last week."
Jesse observed the various intelligent or semi-intelligent creatures. They seemed to be in a half-asleep state, not falling down but not awake either, ignoring the goblins and humans entering.
Then, he noticed a yellow-haired wild boar leaning its head against the cage in the innermost cage.
He initially thought it was a tall Goretusk as the real animal test subject, but as he approached, he realized it was actually a standing wild boar!
Quilboar… It was a Quilboar! Was it brought from Kalimdor?
"You’ve never seen one before, kid," the proud goblin said.
"Why don’t they try to escape? Or attack you?" Jesse asked.
"I have my ways," the goblin said. "It’s a trade secret."
Jesse guessed this guy probably used Gnomish brainwashing rays on them one by one, or the goblin had similar tools. In Azeroth, there were just too many strange ways to make people obedient.
"Except for this Murloc." said the goblin, pointing at the smallest red-scaled Murloc, "All the other test subjects have been given the new potion I made last night."
"They all started turning into undead creatures within 10 minutes of taking the potion… and gradually recovered between 20 minutes to 2 hours, without any fainting symptoms. The transformation was very natural, and most importantly, their memories remained continuous. Before and after the experiment, they were all just as foolish, remembering that they must obey Alchemist Master Miserheld’s orders!"
"The last test subject, which is me." the goblin extended his hand, "Look at me, no, look at this marvelous new potion, cursed be, this is the taste of success!"
"You tried it yourself?"
Jesse looked back and forth at the goblin, indeed no visible changes.
"Of course!" Miserheld said, "I wouldn’t even dare drink it myself, let alone offer it to esteemed customers!"
"What about fake death?" Jesse asked, "The most important thing is to induce fake death…"
"No problem." Miserheld said, "Based on all the data, they all experienced a death that was difficult to tell apart from real death, even fooling my life sign monitoring devices! Oh dear, last night was truly a nightmare for three hours, if they had truly died, I would have lost everything! And incurred another cursed… no, beloved debt!"
Jesse felt their heart pounding twice in their chest, this trip finally didn’t end up being in vain.
The goblin grabbed Jesse’s pants and said, "Hey, how many more of those mushrooms does the troll have?!"
"According to the witch doctor, the three I gave you are the last ones."
Jesse said, "She wasn’t originally planning to sell them to me."
"What?!" Miserheld exclaimed, "It looks like it’s time to find a way to get to the Hinterlands. I know some people at the risk investment company in Razdunk, I have to make them aware of the potential profits of this medicine…"
"I don’t care how you make money, Miserheld," Jesse reached out. "Now, it’s time for me to have my deserved bottle, right?"
"Of course," the goblin said, "I’ll lead the way!"
Miserheld went back to his Alchemy Room, the goblin picked a bottle of pale green potion from the table and handed it to Jesse, saying, "Drink this!"
"Oh, and don’t drink it all at once, just about a third of it is enough. I didn’t have the right-sized bottle to pour it in, so I grabbed a few big ones for now."
Jesse nodded, removed the cork from the bottle, and a strange bitter taste filled the air.
After drinking a third, he gently closed his eyes.
The space seemed to shift, he felt his body spinning, but couldn’t control his eyelids from moving.
Then, his body felt like floating, but not completely, his features and limbs felt unfamiliar, his body felt like a cage locking him inside.
Is this some kind of near-death experience? No… this seems to go beyond near-death. Without sight, the sounds he heard seemed to float from one distance to another, instead of entering his body.
Jesse tried to grasp onto something, but found nothing, a wave of unease swept over him, until he heard Molofeel’s voice.
"Don’t panic… master, you have experienced this sensation before."
Yes, that’s right, soul link, Jesse remembered, soul link.
"Don’t let me die inexplicably…"
He murmured as he attempted to walk towards the demon, but as he took a step, his vision suddenly flickered.
"Hey! Can you hear me?! Did you hear that?" A deep voice shouted from beside.
"Don’t move! You wouldn’t want to hurt yourself in this state, human! The consequences would be terrible! Damn it, I shouldn’t have let you spray chemicals around here with all these bottles and jars. Get out! Follow me! Come on!"
Jesse nodded, reluctantly following a vague pull down the stairs. Each step felt like stepping on a rigid piece of flesh rather than the ground, until he regained some sensation and realized his feet were getting dry.
Gradually, images started to appear in his view, but everything had lost its color, turning into black and white.
Then, he noticed a skinny figure in front of him, also staring at him. The guy was slim, and his clothes were hanging on him like they were on a hanger. Wait, why was he dressed just like him?
It was a mirror!
A goblin peeked out from behind the mirror and asked, "How about this? Isn’t it very scary? If you go to some human Halloween party in this state, I guarantee that no one will look more dazzling than you!"
Jesse tried to speak, wanting to ask when he could return to normal, but his throat felt like a ball of lint, and all that came out after opening his mouth were some cracking sounds.
"I know how you feel, but don’t talk. After all, dead people can’t speak! Enjoy the feeling of immortality for now! Who knows, you might not be able to afford to try it later! Hahaha!!!"
