Chapter 328: Rainforest
The next morning, after drinking a bit of Restorative Potion, Jesse set off from Booty Bay. He had never imagined that his first entrance into Stranglethorn would be from the south.
Just leaving the entrance of Booty Bay, the road was still dry, and the valleys around looked misty. Jesse recalled the descriptions he heard from people who had been to Stranglethorn before in Stormwind, feeling a bit worried.
Following the troll’s directions, he headed towards the coast as guided by the goblin guard, and entered the rainforest after only a few hours of walking.
Here is the valley that Silvia mentioned, leading straight to the coast. Jesse saw the rugged cliffs on both sides as he entered this rainforest.
In the game, there seems to be a passage squeezed between two cliffs that leads all the way to the eastern coast of Stranglethorn. However, this valley is very short, with the exit and the sea visible before entering. Here, it’s a vast tropical rainforest.
It’s extremely humid here, and the overwhelming greenery doesn’t feel very lively. The greenery seems a bit dull, making people tense, as if any leaf could bite them.
Things a bit far in sight are obstructed by mist and moisture. Jesse can only roughly move forward following the direction of the sun. Despite being in a valley and not a vast rainforest, even if he strays a bit, it’s not too off track.
After walking for some time, Jesse feels like he’s wearing too much clothing, especially this cape. Although it can slightly protect the skin from cuts in the rainforest, continuing this way might lead to heatstroke before getting cuts infected.
Thinking about the natives in the rainforest he saw in documentaries, almost walking around naked, Jesse realizes that if he hadn’t absorbed the vitality from the black dragon, making his body much more resistant to the heat, he might have fainted long ago.
At least for now, he’s just feeling uncomfortably hot.
"Molofeel, come here."
The succubus following behind walked up and asked, "Master, missed me?"
"Yes, I miss you, put this on." Jesse said as he wrapped the cloak around her.
"Thank you for caring, but I’m not cold."
"I know you’re not cold," Jesse said. "I know you’re not afraid of the heat. Help me carry this piece of clothing."
The succubus held the cloak to her face and sighed, "I’m happy to serve. I like the smell of my master, your sweat scent."
"Darn it," Saenor muttered. "You’re really disgusting, Sayaad, humans are all stinky animals."
Jesse grabbed the imp by its hind leg and tossed it to the ground, saying, "Walk by yourself."
The imp crawled over, shouting, "Oh master, you are a… not so smelly human."
"You’ve always wanted to walk yourself, right? Go wherever you want," Jesse said.
"But it’s too hard to walk here!" the imp complained.
"Shh," whispered Molofeel suddenly, looking at Jesse. "Master, I think I heard something."
Jesse stopped and listened, and indeed heard the sound of branches breaking in the distance.
They found a sturdy tree root to hide behind, imp immediately ducking under succubus’s cloak. Molofeel looked disgusted but held it in.
The three of them held their breath and waited, apart from the sound of branches breaking earlier, there were no other noises.
Jesse listened suspiciously but didn’t notice anything strange. He was about to speak when succubus shook her head and gestured for him to stay quiet.
The flames in succubus’s eyes slowly faded until there was just a faint glimmer left. Jesse could almost see the unsettling completely pupil-less grey magic eye sockets in her eye sockets.
She lightly pointed behind the tree, furrowing her brow. Jesse seemed to understand her meaning.
Succubus faded away, and imp disappeared too. Jesse listened even more intently towards the direction behind the tree, and heard a faint sound of something crushing the ground.
Whose footsteps could it be?
The sound wasn’t very clear, but it was slow and steady, like someone walking in extremely slow motion.
Jesse realized that the jungle was quieter now, which allowed him to hear the sound.
Troll?
No, Jesse sensed that Molofeel was nearby. If it was a troll, the succubus would have already circled around to prepare for an ambush.
Just then, Jesse heard a loud noise behind him. It definitely wasn’t the sound of natural wind, nor did it sound like any animal breathing, as it was too loud.
Jesse cautiously turned around and saw something that made him shiver and sweat all over.
A huge dinosaur head covered in scales loomed above, resembling a moving dark green wall.
The exaggerated head was barely supported by a slightly thinner neck. It had small yellow eyes looking around.
The monster slowly opened its jaws, exhaling once more, revealing a row of sharp uneven white teeth. The longest ones seemed longer than the Azuresong Mageblade to Jesse.
It used its short arms to grab for a bit, then turned and walked away.
Jesse was surprised to hear how quiet the monster’s steps were compared to its size, and he noticed how carefully it lifted and placed its feet.
This creature was much bigger than a Raptor, Jesse estimated it to be at least six or seven meters tall, with a long straight tail stretching about fifteen or sixteen meters.
The raised spikes on its back clearly identified it as a Devilsaur.
A Devilsaur in Stranglethorn?! Unbelievable!
Devilsaurs are giant creatures living in isolated rainforests, in the game they are found in the rainforests of another continent, Kalimdor, not in Stranglethorn.
Jesse wondered why there was a Devilsaur here, maybe this was once its habitat before being hunted to extinction when the Horde arrived, or for some other reason.
Regardless, it was here now and Jesse did not want to be chased by a Devilsaur.
At that moment, he felt like he was holding his breath to avoid being discovered by the Devilsaur, as if it had followed some sound to their presence but now seemed to have lost them.
With his nerves on edge, Jesse heard a thunderous footsteps, causing the ground to shake, indicating that the creature had given up the hunt. As the footsteps faded into the distance, the shadow of the Devilsaur gradually disappeared into the greenery, and Jesse finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Then he realized a fat, bloated bug was sucking on his leg.
He felt his scalp tingle and his eyes widen uncontrollably as the succubus immediately appeared, reaching to cover his mouth.
The imp jumped onto his lap and singed the bug with a flicker of flame from his fingers. The bug scuttled into the dirt, spewing a mix of red blood and yellow pus from its swollen belly.
