Chapter 322: The Salty Sailor Tavern
Jesse was confused by the terrain of Booty Bay when he first arrived. Luckily, the crescent-shaped town along Blackwater Bay didn’t seem wide. He just needed to walk along the street, paying attention to the different shop names, to find the location of the inn.
Walking all the way until evening, Jesse finally saw a towering building built against a high cliff, with four to five stories. He seemed to have a vague memory of this location. Could this be The Salty Sailor Tavern in the game?
Arriving under the building, Jesse finally saw an old sign held by several goblin soldiers chatting against the wall. The sign was written in several languages, with the common language not being the most prominent.
The Salty Sailor Tavern, that’s correct.
The sky had turned dark, Jesse walked towards the small door at the side of the building where a flickering light was visible. He could already hear the noisy sounds coming from the tavern.
Just when he thought he could finally find a place to rest peacefully, a low noise suddenly came from the shadows.
"Hey, warlock!"
Jesse became alert when he heard it, he looked into the darkness and saw a big shadow sitting there, a pair of orange-yellow eyes staring at him intently.
"Are you calling me? I am not a warlock."
"If you are not a warlock, then what are you?"
"Because I am the only one here, and you are staring at me, Orc."
Jesse scanned his silhouette with his eyes.
This was the first Orc that Jesse had seen after arriving in Booty Bay.
"I know the magic wand you’re carrying." The Orc in the shadows said, "I’ve seen warlocks from the Shadow Council wield it, kid."
Jesse spoke in Orcish, "Whoever had it before is definitely dead now, this magic wand belongs to me."
The Orc nodded upon hearing this and replied in Orcish, "Of course it’s yours. I just wanted some work to do, human, not looking for trouble."
Jesse glanced back and saw the Goblin Sentry getting closer. They didn’t seem to react much to the word ‘warlock’, maybe Booty Bay wasn’t a place that cared about warlocks.
"What can you do?"
The Orc said, "I’ve killed many people, humans, trolls… I know how to make someone disappear without a sound, you’ll need me."
"Unfortunately," Jesse said, "We’re already full."
The Orc hesitated, Jesse gave him a helpless look, then turned and walked into the inn.
In fact, even if this Orc had the abilities Jesse needed, he didn’t really want to get involved with any Orc. After all, he couldn’t leave Booty Bay with an Orc and settle anywhere else on the continent.
In the hotel lobby, there were many people, most of whom seemed to be sailors of different colors.
"Different colors" literally meant there were people with green skin, white skin, black skin, blue, pink, brown… The only source of light came from a distant fireplace and two high-hanging firepots, casting clear shadows on everyone’s faces. Some were twisting and dancing to unknown tunes, making it hard to tell who was who.
But just as Jesse was getting used to the dim light, he saw a real monster.
A succubus was sitting boldly in a corner not far away.
At the moment Jesse laid eyes on the demon, the demon noticed him too.
She whispered to the Dark Iron Dwarves next to her for a while, and one of the dwarves glanced over, grumbling a few words while raising his glass to drink.
Jesse quickly looked away. Tired and hungry, he didn’t want any more trouble today.
The whole tavern was packed, and anyone trying to pass through seemed ready to be pulled into a conflict at any moment.
Finally reaching the counter, Jesse saw an imp crawling behind it, searching for something while yelling in a language he didn’t understand at a goblin. The goblin was impatiently shouting back insults.
"Are there any rooms left, boss?" he asked, looking at the goblin behind the counter who seemed to be wearing the most expensive outfit.
"What do you think, human? You don’t look like a newcomer." the goblin glanced at him and said, "Anyway, all the rooms are fully booked, so go find a shady place to sleep, it’s not as dangerous here as you think."
He noticed Jesse was staring at the imp, and added, "Ah, don’t worry about that little guy, even demons in Booty Bay have to follow basic rules."
Jesse nodded and said, "Then I’ll have some food, and a glass of dark beer."
"Okay," the goblin replied, jumping up and hitting a small wooden board on the counter, saying, "Take your time looking at the food."
"Double…hammerhead shark, Blackwater Bay hammerhead shark slices, spicy, this one," Jesse pointed to a row of crooked words.
"Are you sure?"
Although the goblin asked, he had already put away the board.
Jesse placed the three silver coins on the table, feeling that the prices here were incredibly high, but the name Blackwater Bay hammerhead shark spicy slices seemed worth three silver coins.
After all, he had never eaten hammerhead shark meat in any of his past lives.
Before he could even think about what goblin was asking, a plate of thinly sliced raw fish with a slight grey marbling was already placed in front of him. It was topped with a layer of red sauce and some slices of chili peppers, resembling a thick version of Thai spicy sauce. Jesse had not eaten meat for five or six days, just the smell of the fish in the tavern was already unbearable. He quickly picked up a slice and stuffed it into his mouth.
A salty freshness of seawater combined with the smoothness of the fat made him feel satisfied as soon as his tongue touched the fish. The taste of the chili sauce also covered the fishiness that should have followed.
However, all the enjoyment stopped abruptly once he had licked the chili sauce clean.
Soon, he felt a sourness in the meat, which subconsciously made him think that the meat might be spoiled.
Before he could ponder if the meat was indeed spoiled, a strong foul smell rose up from his mouth, engulfing all previous sensations. The piece of shark meat in his mouth was stuck by this odor.
At that moment, he saw two people on a nearby table packing up and leaving. To avoid the goblins witnessing his twisted expression, he picked up his plate and beer and moved over to their table.
He closed his eyes and swallowed the meat in his mouth despite feeling nauseous.
The meat was sour, bitter, and had a hint of a toilet odor. Jesse had no idea who this meat was meant for.
Because of the strong spicy kick of the chili, it was okay when first put in the mouth, so he spread a lot of hot sauce on the next piece before stuffing it in, took a bite and swallowed it whole, then gulped down several sips of beer.
The taste of the fish in his mouth made the beer taste like concentrated urine, and when the two mixed together, the taste became even stronger, forcing him to lean against the nearby wall and gasp for breath.
Exhaling and smelling his hand, the strong fishy smell almost made Jesse vomit directly. But looking back at the meat, he somehow still wanted to eat a bit more.
After all, he was too hungry.
Hunger, the strange craving for fat and meat mixed with the sour and bitter fishy smell, made this expensive seafood meal of Jesse’s with three silver coins incredibly complicated.
Just as he regretted not just buying something like steamed fish with boiled fruit, Molofeel’s soul beside him seemed a bit restless.
Jesse couldn’t help but cough twice, but he gripped the sword handle at his waist tightly, was there any danger approaching?
"Human, do you like the taste of troll?"
The Dark Iron Dwarves warlock from the corner sat down opposite Jesse and said.
