Chapter 319: The Second Gift
"When it comes to Teron Gorefiend, your bravery shames us southerners," Varian sighed and said, "You might think I’m just saying the usual polite words a king should say, but I truly mean it from the bottom of my heart."
"I was just joking when I came through the door earlier. Of course, I understand that Death Knights are very terrifying enemies, Jesse. I remember the first time I heard about these dreadful creatures appearing on the battlefield, I couldn’t even imagine how to fight them. And you, along with Mrs. Vereesa Windrunner from Quel’Thalas, hunted down their leader, bringing terrifying undead warlocks to the whole of Azeroth. Honestly, when I received that letter, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I thought after the chaos in Dalaran, he had escaped and might come here. Now all those worries have vanished."
"But I have also heard that there are still Death Knights hiding in the desolate lands in the north, right? General Sylvanas Windrunner has informed us and Ironforge about this. So, we cannot let our guard down yet. We can’t say we have completely won the war yet. Not only with the expedition to the Dark Portal, there are Orc scouts and spies everywhere here, and even in our kingdom, there are many dark corners, some of which are filled with madmen who want to avenge the Orc tribes."
After speaking, Varian asked, "I heard from Master Andromath that you have become an apprentice mage, is that right?"
"Yes, Your Majesty."
"When you become a full mage, I will formally invite you to enter this castle, Jesse Seso," Varian said. "Ideally, I would like to invite you in now, but there are many factors I must consider, such as the opinions of others outside, older people than me, and older mages than you."
"So, would you like to help me in this palace that is known as a castle in the future?"
"Of course, I would," Jesse said. "In fact, that is my goal, Your Majesty."
"That’s wonderful," Varian said. "Many people think you are from Lordaeron and that I should not trust you. However, we are of the same age, Jesse, and a few years ago, I was also forced to leave my homeland, only recently returning here. Therefore, I feel that to some extent, we can understand each other, and this city can already be considered a second home for you, right?"
Jesse nodded, and Varian chuckled, saying, "When we were at Stonewatch Keep, I had a feeling that maybe we would become friends, remember when you accidentally bumped into me? You practically saved my life. Damn it, I really don’t like those kinds of situations, even now. Maybe I will get used to them in the future."
Jesse smiled as well, unsure if Varian’s words were out of habit or genuine. But at least Varian’s eyes seemed sincere.
He couldn’t help but measure this younger version against the future Alliance High King Varian Wrynn. Since his future self was a brave and honest leader, Jesse didn’t believe he would be two-faced now.
So when Varian said these words, they really touched him. "Come on," Varian stood up and said, "Come with me, Jesse, I’ll show you the gift I’ve prepared for you."
"Gift?"
"You don’t think I’m just going to chat with you and leave it at that, do you?"
Varian walked towards the main gate, pushed it open without giving Jesse a chance to ask what it was, and Jesse curiously followed.
The king took him to the garden in the palace. Jesse had seen this place in the game, and Vereesa had mentioned that she had always lived here in Stormwind without ever leaving.
But the actual garden looked much larger than in the game. Jesse looked around curiously, while Varian had already jumped over the stone railing and walked to the middle of the garden.
"Over there, Jesse."
Jesse also crossed the railing and followed the king to behind a thick fruit tree, where a black mare stood. When she saw Jesse approaching, she let out a strong breath.
"This is her." Varian reached out to stroke the horse’s neck and said, "What do you think, beautiful, right? She is Aarna, three years old this year."
"A horse?" Jesse was silent for a moment and said, "I can’t afford to keep a horse, it’s too… too much of a burden."
"Do you think I would make you keep one, isn’t that deliberately torturing you?" Varian said with a smile, "I will have someone take the horse to the Wizard’s Sanctum stables, where the stable administrator will help take care of it, all at my expense. You can ride her wherever you like in the future. Of course, you have to take good care of her when you go out."
He glanced over and said, "Whether she likes you or not depends on your abilities. Honestly, she’s not that easy to get along with!"
Hearing the king say this, Jesse couldn’t help but smirk a bit, wasn’t this too embarrassing?
And even with a bad temper, can it be worse than a gryphon?
But thinking that he would have to leave Stormwind tonight, unable to accompany this beautiful mare for a stroll, made him feel a bit itchy inside.
He walked up to try to stroke the black horse’s neck, but she snorted and moved her body to the side.
Seeing Jesse’s surprised expression, Varian smiled and said, "That’s normal, she doesn’t know you yet!"
"Take care of her for me, Jesse. She’s grown up too, I can feel that she really wants to travel around instead of being cooped up in this palace all the time."
"Thank you very much, Your Majesty."
"Hmm, I will send her over in a little while," Varian whispered, "I believe she truly deserves a warrior who defeated Gorefiend."
Jesse nodded, he looked at the king who was only a year older than him, he couldn’t bring himself to mention being entangled by Deathmantle. After all, as Malin said, he had already exhausted all the options that any king could find.
If things in Booty Bay don’t go well, bring it up again later, as he has already purchased the tickets.
Upon returning home in the afternoon, Jesse began to prepare his luggage, money pouch, scroll of spells, and provisions in a rush.
Wearing the dark red Wyrmkin coronet, putting on casual wear and a robe, donning boots, hanging the Azuresong Mageblade in the crude leather scabbard on his belt, draping the mountain lion skin cloak, wrapping a face mask, wearing a hood, and carrying the magic wand on his back along with the luggage.
"Alright, we should leave now," he said to the imp and succubus.
The imp climbed onto Jesse’s shoulder, and the succubus leaned against his back, softly asking, "Master, has anyone ever told you that you have a special charm?"
"Never," Jesse scratched his nose, which was slightly itchy from stray threads, and said, "Enough of these irrelevant words, now disappear and follow me closely."
"Understood," Molofeel whispered in his ear, then slowly disappeared.
"You too," Jesse looked at Saenor.
"Yes, master!"
After saying that, Jesse pushed open the door and walked to the canal side. He looked at his reflection in the water, a mix of blue and green.
