Chapter 316: Getting Ready for a New Adventure (Part 2)
This time, when Jesse bought his cloak and outerwear, he didn’t choose to go to the shops in Larson or Duncan’s Mage Quarter. Instead, he bought a light brown traveler’s cloak and a dark yellow mountain lion skin cloak in the trade district, along with a pair of black-grey engraved leather boots. It cost a total of 71 silver coins, mainly because the Alterac mountain lion skin cloak was expensive.
Drawing too much attention by dressing too richly or inviting trouble by dressing too poorly. If he was going to buy a potion worth 10 gold coins in Booty Bay, then wearing a simple outfit adding up to a few silver coins would seem a bit odd.
Carrying a bundle with his new gear, he walked out of the shop and looked up, it was still early.
He planned to go to Stormwind Harbor to inquire about the prices and schedules of ships heading to Booty Bay. On the way, he also wanted to visit the Cathedral of Light, as the priest had suggested he visit weekly to check on things.
He knew the priests were worried that if he stayed away for too long, he might suddenly turn into a ghost or cause trouble for people in the city. Since he might be away for a month, he thought it better to inform them first, or the church might send people to the Mage Quarter for safety.
Walking towards the small building next to the cathedral, there weren’t many people around.
"Mr. Seso, I heard about your situation from the teacher," the young priest who was there yesterday said when he saw Jesse. "Have you tried dispelling at the Wizard’s Sanctum?"
"I did, but it didn’t work," Jesse replied. "I asked Master Malin for help."
"Since it’s Master Malin," the priest sighed lightly and said, "Mr. Seso, the church currently doesn’t have a good cure for this curse. We only just encountered Death Knights during the Orc War years. As we have ways to stall, I believe a healing method will be found soon. Don’t lose faith."
"I understand, Brother," Jesse nodded. "Friar Fadin suggested I come to the Cathedral of Light weekly for a check on how the curse affects me. But I have plans to travel soon and might be away for a month, Brother, so please relay this message to him."
"Will other priests accompany you?" the priest asked.
"No, but I have other ways of healing," Jesse said.
"But… this is very dangerous, Mr. Seso," the priest said. "Are you sure you want to travel after being affected by such a terrible curse? May I ask what the treatment method is?"
"Restorative Potion," Jesse said. "A friend of mine from the Alchemy Room helped me brew a bottle of Restorative Potion."
Hearing this, the priest widened his eyes and nodded, then said, "Alright, I will inform the teacher. Hopefully everything goes smoothly."
"Thank you."
Jesse noticed the priest’s previously anxious expression relax a lot at once. He knew Ursula was right, the Restorative Potion must be very powerful.
Compared to Cathedral Square, the dock was quite bustling at this time. After a few years of repair, Stormwind had returned to normal operation, and commercial activities were becoming more and more prosperous.
Jesse still remembered when he first arrived here, the dock was filled with tools and materials sent from various kingdoms to aid in rebuilding. Now, it had early turned into a variety of goods, and the workers everywhere had been replaced by travelers and merchants of all kinds.
Approaching the dock administrator’s cabin, Jesse waited a long time until the crowd thinned out a bit. He made sure there were no familiar faces around and then approached to ask, "When will the ships from Booty Bay arrive, sir?"
The dock administrator was a sturdy old man who without turning his head, replied, "Not today, come back the day after tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday."
"When did they all set off?"
The old man glanced at Jesse and said, "The ship that leaves on Monday night is a goblin ship. It will arrive quite fast, in about 10 days. The one leaving on Tuesday morning is a Lordaeron merchant ship. It will take around half a month. You can choose for yourself."
Jesse had to meet the king on Monday and hurried back to prepare for the journey. Since a third of the way was already covered, Jesse felt like there was no option left.
"How much does it cost?"
The administrator replied, "The goblin ship costs 33 silver coins, while the Lordaeron ship costs 20 silver coins." Jesse asked, "Isn’t the distance from Stormwind to Booty Bay not that far? Why does it feel like it takes the same amount of time as going to Southshore?"
"You’ve been to Booty Bay?" The dock administrator stared into Jesse’s eyes and said, "You traveled from Stranglethorn to Booty Bay? You truly have some skills."
He took out a map from his small cabin and placed it on the table. Jesse noticed that the map showed almost the entire eastern continent, along with some islands including Palatine and Kul Tiras, as well as a series of islands in between that he had never heard of before.
On the other side of The Great Sea, there was even another continent, rougher in appearance compared to this side, with only a small portion of the coast drawn, with the rest filled with various monsters and demons, along with endless deserts and mountains.
This meant that at this moment, the human world on this side had only limited knowledge of the other continent, mostly confined to a small area along the coast and inland, with no one yet able to explore deeply.
After all, for adventurers, Kalimdor is a dangerous place full of monsters and ghosts.
But what shocked Jesse was that this map even showed the sacred mountain of the Night Elves, Mount Hyjal, as well as the World Tree and the Well of Eternity on top of Mount Hyjal.
This Well of Eternity is not the original one, but was created from the waters of two ancient Wells of Eternity. It nurtured the World Tree Nordrassil, giving the Night Elves the power of immortality. It was almost impossible for humans to climb up and witness these beings. Jesse guessed that this might be a legend brought by the elves of Quel’Thalas, which may not be different from the monsters down below for most human adventurers.
"Are you even listening?" the dock administrator knocked on the lower part of the map of the Eastern Continent, saying, "Have you seen this place, Moonbrook? You have to go around here. If you want to fly, Booty Bay might be a little closer than Southshore, but not by much. Can you fly? Can you afford a gryphon?"
Jesse shook his head.
The administrator carefully rolled up the map and said, "Well, just go buy a boat ticket, kid from the North. Even in the off-season, a slow boat to Southshore costs 40 silver coins, but a fast boat south only costs 33, isn’t that already much cheaper?"
Jesse tossed a gold coin on the table in front of the administrator and said, "Give me change."
The administrator held the gold coin, rubbed it in his hand, and asked, "I need to register your name and some identifying information, so what’s your name?"
"Jack."
"Last name?"
"Slovakia, Jack Slovakia," Jesse said without hesitation.
The administrator hesitated with the pen on the paper, then said, "Slo… I can’t spell it, never heard of this last name, you write it yourself. Any distinctive features for identification? Physical features, like your clean face…"
Jesse uncovered his shirt to reveal the new skin growing on his ribs and arms burnt by Shadow Flame, asking, "Is this okay?"
The administrator looked at the large rough scars for a moment, then looked at Jesse with a different expression.
"Of course, this is clear enough."
Back home, Jesse started writing a letter.
Instead of directly mentioning that he was afflicted by Deathmantle, he wrote based on what Friar Fadin had said, mentioning that there were still some people in Lordaeron living under the threat of this terrible curse, asking Vereesa in Quel’Thalas if there were any solutions, as Death Knights had also entered Quel’Thalas, and the soldiers there might be facing the same troubles.
By resolving the matter on his trip to Booty Bay, he wouldn’t make Vereesa nervous, while also finding out what he wanted to know and keeping an escape route.
The next morning, Jesse went to Malin’s house and asked, "Master, can you help me deliver a letter to the elves?"
"Is this… Oh, is this a letter for Ms. Vereesa, Mr. Seso?" Malin asked.
"Yes, Master," Jesse said. "I don’t know any other elves in town, so if your teacher knows any, could you ask them to help me deliver it, please?"
"Of course," Malin said. "It might take two to three weeks though."
"That’s okay, Master," Jesse said. "I plan to leave Stormwind for a month, so even if Vereesa replies, I won’t be here to receive it. If she does reply, could you please keep it for me?"
Malin nodded and asked, "Where are you going?"
"I’m heading south because a friend mentioned a possible way to lift my curse, and I want to check it out."
"I see."
"So, I hope you can continue to grant me leave…"
Malin looked at Jesse and said, "You’ve already become an apprentice mage, are you still planning to attend classes at the Protection School? I can help you fake an excuse, but you’re not on the class list anymore… Oh, and there are language and professional courses too."
Jesse nodded in response.
Malin suggested, "You can still attend classes at the Protection School with us, nobody will mind as long as you don’t wear your apprentice mage ring. Oh, the ring, I almost forgot, when are you leaving? I should help you get the ring."
"Probably tomorrow or the day after," Jesse replied. "But when I come back, I’ll go see Master Andromath to get it myself."
"That’s fine," Malin said. "To be honest, I’m curious about how your friend plans to help you solve the problem, but since your friend has a way and I don’t, I can’t say much. Of course, I trust your judgment, Mr. Seso. I can only remind you to be careful and hope everything goes smoothly."
"Also, if it really works, don’t mind sharing a bit of it with me when you come back."
"Of course," Jesse assured. "My friend never intended to keep anything secret."
"That puts my mind at ease a bit, ordinary so-called secret formulas often conceal significant risks," Malin remarked. "And remember your article about the Death Knight. Although it’s hard to say it’s lucky, going through the Deathmantle will make your conclusions more powerful."
"I’ll keep that in mind, Master," Jesse acknowledged.
