Chapter 314: Strange Potion
"I seem to be cursed by a Death Knight’s curse," Jesse said. "The priests at the Cathedral of Light couldn’t help, and my teacher at the Wizard’s Sanctum couldn’t help either."
"Jesse, please don’t tell me it’s the death curse that turns people into evil spirits," Ursula said with a serious look.
"Deathmantle," Jesse chuckled sadly. "Am I the last person in the world to know about this Black Magic?"
Although he sounded casual, Ursula’s face suddenly turned pale.
The Alchemist put out the fire, dispersed the smoke, and sat down silently for a moment before saying, "I know priests can help alleviate the symptoms, have you tried asking for their help?"
"I have," Jesse replied. "I think the reason why things haven’t gotten worse in weeks is because the priests have been helping me."
"Jesse, I feel terrible," Ursula sighed. "When you came to me asking about being poisoned before, I never thought it could be related to this curse. I always thought it was just regular corpse poison."
Jesse said, "No one expected this. If I hadn’t met a priest who had encountered a Death Knight during the war today, we would still be clueless. Is there nothing you can do?"
Ursula didn’t answer at first, she just stared at the bubbling pot in silence for a while.
After a moment, she asked, "So this curse is meant to kill people, right?"
Jesse looked at her and said, "Yes, what is it?"
"What if you die before the curse kills you?" Ursula asked, "If you die for other reasons before being killed by the curse, will your soul still become an evil spirit?"
"The priest said it wouldn’t. Are you suggesting I should commit suicide to save the innocent people of Stormwind?" Jesse sighed and said, "I will consider it, when I really have no other choice."
"I mean, you could try to trick the curse, Jesse," Ursula said, "I know a way to avoid some of the Gurubashi Troll Witch Doctor’s deadly witchcraft. Don’t you want to give it a try?"
"What way?"
Jesse asked, feeling like he had caught a lifeline.
Ursula said, "A Goblin Alchemist can brew a very special potion, I forgot the name, but I know it can create a perfect fake death, turning a person into an undead. After all, the witchcraft manipulated by the troll relies on the power of the dead, and the tribe’s Death Knight also uses Necromancy. There shouldn’t be much of a fundamental difference, right?"
She spoke so quickly, as if reciting a lesson by heart, that Jesse was dazed for a moment before saying, "Wouldn’t I just be dead then?! I’d rather think of a way to stay alive!"
"Can you please listen to me patiently?" Ursula said, "That potion won’t kill you. Once its effects wear off, you’ll recover, but you might have to sleep for a long time. But when you wake up, all the deadly magic that cursed you will be void. Jesse, otherwise how do you think those wealthy goblins who are eager to eliminate witchery plot to kill the troll?"
"Wait a moment," Jesse asked, "Are you talking about the Noggenfogger Elixir?"
"You know about it?!" Ursula exclaimed, "I thought I’d never remember that weird name in my whole life!"
In the game, the Noggenfogger Elixir can turn people into skeletons. Jesse thought it was just a funny item, but to find it here for real? Does such a bizarre thing really exist?
However, the Noggenfogger who knows how to make this potion lives in Gadgetzan city in southern Kalimdor continent. Would they really come all this way for it?
Of course, Jesse couldn’t explain everything in just one go.
"Where do I get it then?"
"You should go to Booty Bay," Ursula said, "The merchants there sell this potion, Jesse. But the price is very, very high. If I were you, I’d bring plenty of coins."
"How much for one bottle, any idea about the cost?" Jesse inquired.
"To be honest, I’m not sure," Ursula replied, "Only Goblin Alchemists know the recipe, and they never reveal it. Even the inventor only shared it with a few close friends. Not all Goblin Alchemists are aware of it."
"I’m not sure about the price at which the goblin merchant sells, but it definitely won’t be cheap. Based on my estimate of the effects of the other strange potions they sell, it should be around ten gold coins."
"Ten gold coins?!" Jesse sighed. In the game, a group of 5 items can be bought for several silver coins, so why such a big difference here?
But upon thinking a bit, he realized that he didn’t really feel it was too expensive deep down, after all, this was something that could potentially save his life.
Perhaps this is the price one has to pay to get hold of a frightening weapon like the Azuresong Mageblade.
Considering the praises Vereesa and Greed gave to the potions made by Ursula, along with Ursula’s knowledge of the curse and even the issues between the trolls and goblins in southern Stranglethorn, he had to take her proposed solution seriously.
"How long will it take to go to Booty Bay?" Jesse asked.
"If we go by sea, it will take approximately less than two weeks to sail there," Ursula said.
"Oh my goodness," Jesse sighed, "I might not even make it there alive. Ursula, should I find a priest to accompany me? I can’t go to such a dangerously uncertain place with an unfamiliar priest; I wouldn’t be able to use Shadow Magic to protect myself."
Ursula replied, "Just tell me if you want to go or not."
Jesse thought for a moment, he decided to write a letter to Vereesa the elf to ask for help, then he asked Malin to check his mail for him, while he took a trip to Booty Bay to find out more.
"Of course I want to go."
"Here, take this." Ursula turned and took out a bottle of pale green potion wrapped in a very special material from the cabinet, then handed it to Jesse.
"Don’t drink it all at once, take it slowly. Drinking it once will gradually cleanse necrotic contamination in your body for a period of time, very effective. Much stronger than the purification power of an average priest. If you use it carefully, this bottle can last two months."
Jesse took the bottle, uncorked it and took a whiff. A faint scent of Goldthorn, a fragrance he was familiar with as he often helped Malin brew tea.
But behind this fragrance, there was a subtle hint of the refreshing smell of rain-drenched earth.
He quickly closed the bottle and asked, "Is this a Restorative Potion?"
Jesse remembered asking about Elemental Earth in the Alchemy Room, where the person mentioned writing a letter to the herbal shops in Dalaran and Lordaeron to order supplies.
"You sure have a lot of random knowledge," Ursula sighed.
"This thing is too expensive," Jesse said. "I…"
"Is your life valuable? If you die, where can I find such a powerful helper?" the Alchemist asked.
Jesse looked at the bottle of medicine again and asked, "How can I repay you?"
"Repay?" Ursula pointed at Jesse’s chest and said slowly, "Don’t die, understand? Everything else is fine. I can’t guarantee it will work a hundred percent, Jesse. If it works, don’t forget to find a way to bring back some Mojo for me."
"Even if it doesn’t work, I will bring it back for you," Jesse said.
