Chapter 310: Unexpected Changes
"So I don’t have to take exams?" Jesse asked.
"At least this test is over." Andromath said, "If a mage at Wizard’s Sanctum can defeat Teron Gorefiend, but can’t pass the exams of our two apprentice mages… then we all are in trouble."
He took out a pocket watch from his clothes and glanced at it, saying, "And you missed it too. I will go back and discuss with the other masters to ensure your passing. Ultimately, the promotion of young apprentice mages still depends on the opinions of the teachers."
"As for the upcoming exams, how about this: can you write a detailed report about Death Knights during this time and let your teacher Master Malin review it for you? I believe no mage, whether a teacher at the academy or any other mage, has had an experience like yours before. It is truly unique. And with Mrs. Vereesa Windrunner attesting to your experience, no one at Wizard’s Sanctum can question your qualification to become an official mage."
"I will write it, master." Jesse nodded.
"One more thing." Andromath cleared his throat and said, "The king wishes to meet you. Let me help find a suitable time, perhaps next Monday, the 25th, as per the king’s request."
"The king wants to see me?" Jesse asked. "Yes…"
"Surely, he wants to offer you some encouragement and praise, Jesse." Andromath said. "Of course, I can’t speculate further, but it won’t be a bad thing. You’ll find out when the time comes."
Jesse nodded. If the king wants to see him, he certainly has no choice.
Watching Jesse’s expression, Andromath sighed and said, "Did I make it all sound too casual?"
"When I first heard this news, I couldn’t believe what was happening, Jesse. In my mind, you have always been a brave and excellent young magician, despite facing many challenges. But this time, even I and the other masters find it hard to imagine."
"Not only in the Wizard’s Sanctum, but even for the archmages of the Kirin Tor, Teron Gorefiend is a very terrifying enemy."
"I can’t imagine how you can return to Stormwind and continue your daily life after going through all this. If I were in your shoes facing an opponent like Teron Gorefiend at your age, I would probably be very lost. If you need anything, you can talk to Lady Kanon, who has helped many magicians struggling to overcome the horrors of war."
Jesse said, "Actually, when I was in Dalaran, I had a feeling, Master Andromath, that Teron Gorefiend would not let me go. Many nights afterward, I dreamt of this battle, perhaps I was mentally prepared for it. And Ms. Vereesa’s payment is generous, and I really need the money."
Inside the money pouch Vereesa sent were 16 gold coins, and the box along with the bag inside would greatly improve Jesse’s life. After all, his family’s old box was nowhere near as big, and the bag was not as sturdy, except for the Warlock Pack he found on an Orc Warlock’s body.
Andromath said, "The Quel’dorai have always been generous, and she has chosen the right person. Be prepared, Jesse Seso, this matter will surely spread."
"I understand," Jesse said.
During the exam, Jesse had some silver coins in his pocket and planned to go buy a robe from Larson.
All the robes he bought before in an attempt to last a lifetime quickly fell apart within a month or even a week. When he took his cloak and the Quel’dorai purple short robe to Larson’s shop for repairs, James’s nephew, Ivan Larson, even shook his head, suggesting it would be better to just get a new one.
So, this time he didn’t want to buy anything too expensive again.
And it seems like there won’t be any dangerous situations in the near future. Greed doesn’t know when he’ll come back, and everyone at The Slaughtered Lamb is being honest, so there’s no need for expensive anti-magic robes.
Walking into the shop, James Larson greeted the midday sun outside, squinting his eyes with his hand and asked, "Sir, is there anything you need?"
"Mr. Larson, don’t you remember me?" Jesse asked.
"Um." James tilted his head and changed his angle, saying, "It’s Mr. Jesse Seso. I feel like you’ve grown taller, haven’t you? When was the last time you came? I remember you came one or two times this year, right? Or have I reached an age where I can’t remember things?"
"Grown taller?" Jesse laughed and said, "Impossible. I was here a month ago, with that elf, remember?"
"I remember now." Larson chuckled and said, "But at your age, although you’re not growing as fast as boys in their early teens, you’re not yet at the stage where you stop growing!"
"So, what do you need this time? How can I help you?"
Jesse looked at Larson in silence for a while, and suddenly remembered the black dragon he had drained life from and killed in the ruins.
Since then, he hasn’t really tried to see if his own strength has grown, or if his physical abilities have changed.
Larson thought he had grown taller, is this really just an illusion?
He remembered those nights when he couldn’t sleep, it seemed like it wasn’t just because of the nightmares and hallucinations left behind by battling Teron Gorefiend’s shadow and necromantic powers, but also because of physical discomfort.
"Still not sure?" Larson asked.
"I want to measure my height first, Mr. Larson, and then choose a robe," Jesse said.
Larson nodded and turned to walk inside, asking, "How much is the budget this time?"
"10 silver coins," Jesse said, "It’s almost summer, so I want something loose."
"So just a regular robe, right? No need for any special magic, or expensive materials," Larson said as he held out a measuring tape, "No plans for travel in the near future?"
"Not at the moment," Jesse said, "It’s better if it’s brown or gray, just something ordinary."
Larson pointed to the table next to him and said, "There’s Mr. Jesse Seso, come here, when was the last time we measured you here?"
"It should be, but it was a few months ago," Jesse replied.
Staring at the ruler in Larson’s hand, Jesse felt his heart pounding in his chest. He never thought measuring his height would make him so nervous.
"5 feet 10 inches, Mr. Seso, what was the measurement last time?"
Hearing this measurement, Jesse’s mind buzzed, looking into the boss’s eyes.
"Are you sure?"
"Of course, isn’t it written here?" Larson pointed to the markings on the ruler.
Jesse nodded and said, "It’s almost the same as last time, maybe a little taller, or maybe I was measured shorter last time."
"Then you definitely weren’t measured here by me," Larson smiled, putting away the ruler, and said, "Let me pick out some clothes that fit you, young man. Please wait for a moment."
"Thank you, Mr. Larson," Jesse said. About 5 feet 10 inches is almost 5 feet 10 inches, and when he started school on January 20th, he was only around 5 feet 8 to 9 inches tall.
If he could naturally grow 4 centimeters in two months, wouldn’t he grow 24 centimeters in a whole year?
So something unnatural must be happening.
