Chapter 031: The Price We Can’t Bear
Elemental Earth is not just any ordinary dirt, but a special substance that is close to the essence of earth element, almost only found naturally in elemental planes, elemental creatures, and some magically infused minerals.
The ancient ancestors of dwarves, the Earthen, were made up of this pure substance.
I see, this recipe is meant to help dwarves resist poison using their body’s mechanisms, quite straightforward indeed.
According to Jesse’s memory, Elemental Earth can be obtained with a small chance by killing live earth element creatures, which roam in extremely dangerous places. With his abilities, he shouldn’t even think about finding them on his own.
When playing games, Jesse once made a fortune in the early stages by crafting elemental sharpening stones using Elemental Earth. Even in a world where terrifying warriors who can single-handedly fight dragons exist everywhere, the price of Elemental Earth is still quite high.
After flipping through a few pages, this book doesn’t mention how to get Elemental Earth in this world or its price. Jesse can only ask at "The Need of Alchemists."
Walking into the store, Ruth is not there this time, but a young blonde girl is manning the shop.
"Hello, what can I help you with?"
Jesse asked, "Are you Maria Lumere?"
The girl said, "Yes, my mother is out, and I’m helping in the shop. I remember your voice, you’re the Herbalist, right?"
"Yes." Jesse sighed with relief slightly. He feared that if Ruth was present, she might have guessed he had been affected by corpse poison, and she would probably mock him.
"I’m curious about the price of Elemental Earth."
"Elemental Earth?" The girl opened her mouth in surprise and said, "You… want to place an order? I can inform my mother and have her write to Dalaran or Lordaeron to inquire if their alchemist warlocks have any stock to sell… It might take about two to three months, I can’t give you a specific date."
Jesse had a very familiar feeling, like when he had listened to the shopkeeper at Duncan’s tailoring shop explain how the outfit with seven gold coins had been made.
He was no longer very interested in the price of Elemental Earth. The cost of writing a letter, contacting alchemist warlocks in several cities, and waiting for several months far exceeded his expectations.
"No, thank you." Jesse waved his hand, ready to leave, but then turned back.
"Do you know of any good ways to cure corpse poison?"
Maria said, "Want to get rid of the corpse poison? You can go to the Cathedral of Light to ask."
Yeah… Why not go find a priest?
Jesse suddenly felt like a fool, thanked them and rushed out of the Alchemy Room.
It was just past noon, walking briskly on the main street by the Stormwind Canal. Despite the cloudy sky, Jesse felt like everything had a halo around it.
Maybe it was because of the water ripples on the canal surface, or maybe it was after learning about the symptoms of the corpse poison. He started to pay more attention to these unusual feelings.
Now he started to feel uncomfortable all over, as if he would soon turn into a zombie. With that thought, his legs started feeling clumsy.
The sunlight became brighter and brighter, causing his skin to feel slightly painful. Was he going to turn into a vampire on the spot? Creating the Salayn lineage nearly a dozen years early…
Would walking faster accelerate the spread of the poison? Jesse remembered hearing that with snake venom, one should not exert oneself too much, or else they would die faster.
Thinking this, things in front of him seemed to blur even more.
Cathedral Square used to be in the northernmost part of Stormwind. With the city expanding to the north, Cathedral Square is now in the middle of the city, surrounded by construction sites.
During the war, the cathedral served as a sanctuary for refugees for a long time. Even now, many citizens whose homes have not been rebuilt still live in Cathedral Square.
The Cathedral of Light, though not fully rebuilt yet, still looks magnificent with scaffolding and ladders stacked up around its tall towers and white walls.
Admiring the grandeur of the cathedral and crossing the newly built canal bridge, Jesse was stopped by a guard before reaching the entrance of Cathedral Square.
"The King and Queen are visiting the sick and suffering refugees in Cathedral Square. No unauthorized persons are allowed inside," the guard said.
"I am sick too," Jesse said. "And it’s serious… I need a priest’s help."
"What illness do you have?"
"I’ve been poisoned, possibly by corpse poison."
The guard lifted Jesse’s chin and glanced at his neck.
"I can’t say what’s wrong, but you’re not feeling well… You can go in but don’t go to the square, they won’t let you in there. Some priests are taking care of patients in the building on the left, you can try your luck there."
"Thank you very much."
After Jesse was let through, he originally wanted to head straight to the small building pointed by the guard, but he suddenly became curious about what King Varian Wrynn, who was still a young man, looked like.
As he passed through the entrance of Cathedral Square, he glanced inside and saw rows of guards and nobles in expensive clothes blocking the door.
Behind the crowd, the waving blue and gold lion flag was slowly moving, occasionally cheers and praises could be heard. That was probably where the king was, but nothing could be seen from here.
Several guards blocking the street stared at Jesse as he looked around, Jesse didn’t dare to stay any longer and went into the building.
It was a pity, he couldn’t see the king.
Jesse felt like he was a bit of a star chaser, but after crossing over without any cheats, without any powerful bloodlines, they wouldn’t even allow him to chase after stars?
Upon entering the small building where the guards said they were temporarily housing sick citizens, there were many patients waiting to be seen, surrounded by many priests. A tall figure, either a Paladin or guard, was trying to maintain order, but it didn’t seem very effective.
Just as a priestess finished talking to an injured person with the help of someone, Jesse pushed his way through.
"Hello… Priest, do you have time?"
"Of course, what do you need help with?"
Jesse remembered his experience of going to a public hospital before he crossed over, facing various strange questions from the crowded group of patients, it wasn’t easy for the doctors to stay calm.
The priest here was even more dramatic, after speaking he actually smiled at Jesse, although the smile was tired and sweaty, it disappeared in a flash.
"I think I’ve been poisoned by a corpse…"
"Corpse poison? Are you sure, sir? Where have you been that could have caused you to be poisoned by a corpse? Getting poisoned by a corpse requires being attacked by a ghoul…"
"I’ve been to a graveyard, and I scratched my hand."
The priest lowered his head in suspicion, rolled up his sleeves, and looked at the veins on Jesse’s neck and arms, his eyes flickering slightly.
"Come with me."
