Chapter 309: Letter From the Elven Kingdom
"Pure Arcane energy emits white or purple light, but when mixed with other types of energy, it takes on the characteristics and appearance of that energy, such as mixing with fire elements to form a golden hue or…"
Jesse glanced at the notes in his hand, closed his eyes and said, "Gryphon red, what color is gryphon red? Gryphons have so many different feather colors, how am I supposed to remember? Darn it…"
He glanced down the hallway where a few apprentices were also waiting to enter the exam room. They were all younger than him, mostly around fifteen or sixteen years old.
At eighteen years old, the difference in physique and appearance between himself and the younger apprentices was quite noticeable, adding to Jesse’s stress.
If he didn’t pass the March exam, the next one would be in August, which would bring him closer to turning twenty.
Becoming an apprentice mage at twenty wasn’t something to be proud of. Eighteen was still okay. Passing the Apprentice Mage Exam at eighteen was considered a normal age, so he hoped to pass this time.
Jesse was actually feeling very uncertain. He wasn’t well-prepared, and he had been dealing with various illnesses during this time. He had almost become a regular at the church and library.
Luckily, there were many immigrants from Duskwood who were treating the undead plague, so he didn’t stand out so much.
"Darn it, off to another place again," he muttered as he glanced at the materials, closed his eyes, and began to recite.
"Mr. Jesse Seso!"
"Here!"
Jesse looked up towards the door of the exam room, but no one was waving at him.
"Over here," a voice from behind said.
"Uh," Jesse turned around and saw Master Andromath standing there.
It had been a long time since Jesse had seen the high wizard Andromath, but he looked just the same as a few months ago.
Standing next to the young children around him, he seemed even more robust and sturdy, like a buffalo among sheep.
"Come here, Mr. Jesse Seso, I need to talk to you," he beckoned with a wave.
Jesse hesitated, "Master, I am about to take my apprentice mage exam, it’s my turn soon, I have been preparing for a long time…"
Andromath raised an eyebrow, "It’s not necessary, come over here, Mr. Seso."
What does this mean… Are they going to make me cast spells again?
Jesse hesitated for a moment, glanced back at the exam room, and reluctantly followed Andromath.
Andromath led Jesse around the tall tower of the Wizard’s Sanctum, eventually arriving at an empty hallway and stopping in front of an open room.
He peeked inside, checked the nearby corridors to make sure nobody was around, then leaned against the wall and said, "King Varian received a letter from Quel’Thalas, a personal letter from Silvermoon City’s Ranger-General, Miss Sylvanas Windrunner. You should know her, right."
"I know her, but she doesn’t know me," Jesse replied.
"I doubt that, Jesse," Andromath looked into the young mage’s eyes and continued, "After all, the letter mentioned you and Mrs. Vereesa Windrunner finding the escaped spirit of Teron Gorefiend in the destroyed city of Sunveil, and even thanked you for taking care of her sister."
Take care of her little sister?
Jesse couldn’t imagine that Sylvanas Windrunner could have written this.
Andromath looked at Jesse’s expression and asked, "So is it true? Master Malin helped you take time off in the latter half of February, and I heard you went to Lakeshire, so you actually went north? Was that the trip?"
"Yes, master," Jesse said. "It was this time."
"Then why didn’t you mention it? I mean, you were going to look for Teron Gorefiend, why didn’t you seek help from the king and the Wizard’s Sanctum beforehand?" Andromath said. "Do you have any other reasons?"
"Because we weren’t actually looking for Gorefiend," Jesse admitted. "Mrs. Vereesa Windrunner thought there were clues to the Death Knight there, and she wanted me to help investigate, but who knew we would encounter…"
"So Teron Gorefiend found you," Andromath asked. "Is it related to the battle in Dalaran? I know you were almost killed by him, and the Farstriders from Quel’Thalas saved you."
"It’s somewhat related," Jesse nodded. "But… it’s actually quite complicated, master."
"I’m just here to confirm this matter, Jesse," Andromath said. "Currently, only a few masters and I know about this letter in Stormwind. Only Lord Bolvar Fordragon is at Stormwind Keep, the king knows, and it hasn’t been made public to others yet. The reason being your inexplicable concealment of this matter for almost half a month, King Varian thought you had some reservations. However, shouldn’t something like this be reported to the king immediately?"
Of course it should be like this.
But the reason Jesse hesitated for so long was not because he didn’t want to tell anyone that he took out Teron Gorefiend.
On one hand, he had no evidence. Once the king asked him what important items he brought back related to Teron Gorefiend, he couldn’t just vomit out black water in the palace, especially since he had already given Gorefiend’s shadow gem to Vereesa.
Gorefiend died and besides that gem and a paper he kept that could incriminate himself, he didn’t have much else. His body he used was in Dalaran, and his achievements belonged to the Farstriders. After all, officially he was just an apprentice who was almost killed.
Thinking about that body, he felt uncomfortable in his stomach. Even though it had been half a month since the battle, he still hadn’t fully recovered from its effects.
On the other hand, was the human he saw in Gorefiend’s memory really Kel’Thuzad? What would his reaction be if he knew Gorefiend’s death was related to him?
He had no clue at all. With all these dilemmas, facing the Apprentice Mage Exam, the aftermath of the death decay, and ongoing treatment, he didn’t have the energy to deal with the pressure from the king or the Wizard’s Sanctum.
Several times he wanted to talk to Malin, but for various reasons, he held back.
At that time, Jesse also considered that Quel’Thalas might write to the Wizard’s Sanctum or King Varian to explain the situation. So, he thought it would be better to let the elves help him.
He didn’t expect this day to come so quickly, and he wasn’t mentally prepared for it.
"Ms Vereesa doesn’t want her whereabouts to affect the kingdom," Jesse explained. "And in this mission, I am actually hired, so I have to follow her orders, Master Andromath. If I reveal these things early, I might not get paid. Of course, now that Ms Vereesa and her sister are willing to tell the king everything, there’s no need for me to hide anything anymore."
"And I have been busy with exams, Master Andromath…" Master Andromath sighed, raising his arms. "I discussed with a few masters, including Master Malin. Jesse Seso, about promoting you to an official mage.
"Official…?" Jesse was puzzled.
Andromath said, "Of course we are considering it, because there have been very few geniuses who became official mages before the age of twenty in the history of the Wizard’s Sanctum. Jesse, you clearly have talent for combat and know how to handle tough opponents, but you still have room for improvement in the Arcane aspect…"
Jesse coughed and said, "I understand… Master."
"So our current decision is to promote you to an apprentice mage first, and then after two years, when you turn twenty, you will take the official mage assessment to be promoted further."
