Chapter 306: Shadow Gem
Jesse tied up his bag, slumped against a pillar, and after memorizing the spells of Gorefiend, he suddenly lost his motivation and energy, followed by severe fatigue and a headache.
The hall in front of him seemed brighter than before, and he could see some blurry things, probably because even in the Burning Steppes, daytime was always slightly brighter than nighttime.
Perhaps because Teron Gorefiend’s soul had died, the darkness that enveloped this place seemed to dissipate, and at least the strange and unsettling atmosphere that the entire temple had previously brought was now gone.
The strange patterns on the stone pillars behind him, the carvings on the wall, whether they symbolize the Old God or the Fire King, including the collapsed dwarf statues at his feet, had all turned back into ordinary cold stones, just with a hint of shadow and the smell of death around them.
"Vereesa, have you not slept in a long time?"
"This night feels like a terrible nightmare."
"So you rest, I’ll keep watch for you."
"I can’t sleep even if you ask me to." Vereesa stared at the wall in front of her and said, "Every time I close my eyes, I see that ghostly figure, and you, Jesse, I know you might not like me saying this, but when you are tormented by his spirit, you look scarier than Teron Gorefiend." Jesse looked at her, finding it hard to imagine enduring hours beside someone whose body was possessed by a demon, wondering how much horror he had to face.
If he faced the same situation, he might even choose to stab the person to prevent Teron Gorefiend from taking over their body, completely ending the possibility of their resurrection.
After all, he couldn’t guarantee that he could win if the person resurrected on their own.
If Vereesa did the same, he would actually understand.
Of course, at that time, he wouldn’t have any room to understand.
"Can you tell me how you figured him out in the beginning?" Vereesa asked.
This question caught Jesse by surprise.
Waking up from that dream-like battle, trying to remember as much as possible the memories left by Teron Gorefiend, he hadn’t even thought about how to make up for what happened before the fight.
So, he had to do his best to move forward.
"He said he wanted to find Anduin Marshal Lothar’s body, and he said he sustained himself using the altar here. Does this Dark Iron Dwarves’ shadow altar sustain his existence? I really can’t help but be suspicious, just like you said before, this isn’t a normal temple, it’s a place of worship for dark things by the Dark Iron Dwarves. More importantly, I still remember his scent, Vereesa, the moment that guy approached me, I immediately felt my suspicion was correct."
Actually, Jesse originally thought he could directly harm him with a sneak attack by the two of them at the beginning, after all, in the game, he was just a seemingly powerless Orc soul without a shell, who had to deceive others to collect his artifacts from his past life in order to resurrect.
He never expected him to erupt with such evil power in anger.
"That magic wand." Vereesa looked behind her and said, "The black one was glowing all the time, it only went out shortly before you woke up."
Jesse turned to look at the magic wand on the wall, he touched his own back, only to realize that he didn’t know when his magic wand had been taken off.
Actually, his shirt has been changed before. Think about it, lying there for a long time with dead body decay, the shirt probably got really dirty. It must be stuck to his skin and starting to rot.
"You can’t lie down properly with the magic wand on your back," Vereesa said. "So, I’ll help you take it off, and I noticed the gem on that magic wand. It’s the gem from Teron Gorefiend’s staff, right? I remember it very clearly."
Seeing that Vereesa had noticed, Jesse nodded and admitted, "Okay, that gem is indeed Gorefiend’s. I found it near his body that day."
"I thought you would recognize him by that gem," Vereesa said.
Jesse replied, "Every time I cast a spell, it shines…"
He glanced at the magic wand, and suddenly it was pulled over by a dark force, almost hitting Jesse’s hand, making him feel startled.
Jesse glanced at Vereesa, who seemed unfazed by it. Maybe in Quel’Thalas, there are many mages who can magically pull their magic wand over.
What really scared him was not the powerful magic wand flying over, but he realized that the nearby fire magic wand and the package on the ground also moved slightly, as if blown by a strong wind.
Could this be Gorefiend’s Grasp? In the game, Teron Gorefiend’s magic is a skill that pulls everything around him closer.
Did I also have this ability?
He couldn’t check here, because there was an elf suspicious of being possessed by Teron Gorefiend beside him, and Vereesa had also witnessed Gorefiend’s Grasp. Whether he could use this power or not, things would really get confusing if he demonstrated it here.
"Actually, I have another guess about your magic wand. Have you ever thought about why Gorefiend is willing to leave here with us?" Vereesa asked.
"Isn’t he trying to take over Marshal Lothar’s body?" Jesse said.
Vereesa said, "He claims that his soul persists because of this altar, which could be a ploy for sympathy, or it could be true. I could sense a strong connection between his power and the altar in the hall during the battle. I have also read stories about evil souls surviving by ancient abandoned dark altars. If he leaves this temple, the power of the undead may decay quickly."
"Teron Gorefiend wouldn’t take such a risk," Jesse said. "Of course, unless he has a way to maintain his power… Are you referring to this gem?"
"At least, that’s how I see it," Vereesa said.
Jesse had to admit that Vereesa’s thoughts made sense, as in the game, Gorefiend couldn’t leave the altar in Shadowmoon Valley, but had to wait nearby for players to take the bait. Even if a player took the bait, he could only ask them to bring their artifacts and items back to him near the altar.
In other words, Teron Gorefiend sensed Jesse and Vereesa approaching, maybe even felt the magic wand and the shadow gem on it getting closer, so he used the power of the undead to drive those dwarf souls to bring them here, with the goal of having Jesse take him to Lothar with the gem on the magic wand?
When the time comes, he took the chance to sneak into Lothar’s body, even though he didn’t need to find Lothar’s body. Just finding a body of a human soldier in the burial pit would be enough for Jesse and Vereesa to deceive.
A Death Knight’s strength is completely different when they have a body compared to when they don’t. Just think about when he was in Dalaran, he could easily demolish half a house with one blow.
The consequences would be unimaginable if Jesse hadn’t seen through him.
"I almost got played for a fool," Jesse sighed.
