Chapter 300: A Dark Malice
Vereesa coated both of her blades with Blessed Wizard Oil and handed the bottle to Jesse.
Jesse glanced at the dark staff in his hand, then slung it on his back and coated his flame staff with the oil.
Who knew what strange things would happen when applying the holy energy to this black staff, but he had a bad feeling about it.
He peeked outside, there was nothing on the street, the air was freezing cold, as if it had been frozen solid.
"Can we only see those ghosts with the Invisibility Potion?" he whispered.
"It seems so," Vereesa said leaning beside him. "Are we going to have to drink Invisibility Potion all the way to escape?"
Jesse whispered, "It seems like we don’t have enough potion. It will only last for about ten minutes if we drink bottle by bottle. Are you sure we can escape this city in just over ten minutes?"
"No," Vereesa said, "But I have no idea where these ghosts are. I can’t sense them. Maybe they are nearby, who knows. You are a mage, Jesse."
"I’m an apprentice mage," Jesse wanted to emphasize.
But this is not the Mage Quarter, and now is not the time to escape responsibility as an apprentice.
It’s not like I can’t feel anything at all… Since a while ago, he felt a strange coldness in this part of the city. Could this chilling cold be caused by the haunting of ghosts?
Jesse remembered feeling something similar when they were at the Great Mausoleum at Raven Hill. It was different from the cold of spending a winter night outdoors; it was a chilling pain that felt like it penetrated to the core.
"Maybe," he muttered softly.
"Do you feel anything?" Vereesa asked.
"Cold, it’s much colder here than it was just now," Jesse looked around and said, "It seems to be related to the ghosts here. Can’t you feel it?"
Vereesa looked around and said, "Honestly, I’m not sure."
She then looked into Jesse’s eyes and said, "Anyway, no matter what’s wrong, try using fire magic to attack. I think fire, especially fire magic influenced by this oil, can drive away ghosts."
Jesse said, "Then lead the way, let’s see if we can find a way out quickly."
"I’m not familiar with dwarf cities either," Vereesa said. "But I think as long as we walk in one direction, we should be able to find a way out, right?"
Jesse sighed and said, "I can’t even tell the directions apart here, the buildings all look too similar, and the roads are not straight, like a maze."
Darn it, weren’t we supposed to come out looking for Shattered Hand Orcs and Death Knights?
We found the Shattered Hand Orcs, so why did they run into this Dark Iron ghost town?
The two of them left the abandoned building and came to the street. There was no sign of the Wyrmkin, nor could they hear any conversation going on.
"Have we gotten rid of the Wyrmkin?" Jesse asked softly.
"I can’t feel their presence anymore, but the smell of the dragon race is still strong." Vereesa glanced back at Jesse’s torn cloak and said, "They might think we are still by that baby dragon’s body, so let them search there."
"The road ahead is curved, let’s take another path."
Saying this, she walked towards another doorway along the wall. By now, Jesse was wide awake, after all, what’s more exciting than walking in a dark alley surrounded by ghosts in the middle of the night?
The elf bent down to enter the doorway, with Jesse following closely behind. It seemed to be a regular dwarf’s dwelling, with everything from the roof to the doorway extremely low.
Just as the two were about to climb out of the window on the other side, Jesse suddenly felt something wrong behind him.
It was a chilling sensation approaching!
He decisively recited the Scorch Curse, restraining himself from releasing his shadow power so as not to affect the Wizard Oil’s effectiveness…
With the spell completed, golden flames burst inside the room, accompanied by a piercing scream!
Jesse watched in horror as a faint image shattered in the expanding flames, a terrifying skeletal face looming before him, contorting in pain before vanishing, the screams disappearing only when they were right by his ears, like a woman wailing and clutching Jesse’s neck.
Even though Jesse had been through many scary battles, he was still frightened by the sudden rush of power and took a few steps back, falling backwards out of the window.
Vereesa’s face also turned pale, holding a knife tightly as she stared at the window.
Puffs of black smoke emerged from the window, the chilling sensation no longer present.
"Did you see that, just there, did you see it?" Jesse got up and pointed inside the window, asking.
"I saw it…" Vereesa continued to gaze at the window, nodding and saying, "You did really well, Jesse."
"I really don’t want to go through that again." Jesse glanced at the narrow street, the dwarf building next to it, and whispered, "But it’s obvious that there are still many spirits here. When I was using the invisibility potion … I saw at least two, maybe three."
"Maybe not all the spirits here want to harm us." Vereesa said.
"Let’s hope so." Jesse said, "But I already got rid of one of them."
Vereesa swallowed and mumbled, "Hopefully the friendly ones won’t mind too much, should we consider this as a counterattack?"
"They have all turned into ghosts, can we expect them to act rationally?" Jesse whispered.
The elf sighed helplessly, glanced towards the south and said, "Let’s continue." The two of them walked down along the wall, when suddenly Jesse felt a chill in the air. Before he could warn her, Vereesa gasped and seemed to be pushed sideways and hit the wall.
The elf reacted quickly, swung his sword towards the air, and a golden light slashed diagonally, revealing a faint figure out of nowhere. The figure howled as it moved up the wall and gradually dissipated.
Eventually, only a small skeleton shape remained, whimpering and fading away.
Vereesa rubbed her neck and furrowed her brow. Jesse approached and noticed a light purple handprint on her skin.
"Don’t let your guard down, have some potion." Jesse handed over a bottle of Shadow Protection Potion.
Vereesa nodded as she took the bottle, drank it and leaned against the wall, catching her breath. She said, "That ghost was just a child. Their hostility is stronger than we thought, maybe they are protecting their city, or perhaps just… filled with hatred towards all the living."
"I’ll go in front this time." Jesse also drank a bottle of Shadow Protection Potion and said, "I could sense the ghost attacking you just now, but he was too fast."
Vereesa seemed to want to say something, her lips moved but she remained silent, only nodding.
Jesse reached out and said, "Give me a knife. I felt that with the speed that thing rushed at me just now, I might not have a chance to cast a spell, and my energy hasn’t fully recovered either."
The elf handed the knife to Jesse. Jesse held the knife in his hand and suddenly felt much more confident. After all, he didn’t think waving a stick at ghosts was reliable at all.
