Chapter 299: The City of Dark Iron
Following the location of the young dragon’s body, Jesse found the small cabin where he and Vereesa had hidden before. It seemed like she heard his footsteps, as she stuck her head out and waved, as if afraid that Jesse wouldn’t find the place.
Dragging half of the wild boar to the window, Jesse sighed and sat down on the nearby broken stones, saying, "I’m so tired from this journey!"
"You’ve worked hard, but how did you get this wild boar to obey and willingly sacrifice itself?" Vereesa asked curiously.
"Just like you, through communication," Jesse patted the boar’s butt and said, "It’s just not very friendly, almost poking me to death."
Vereesa laughed and Jesse looked at the bandage under her ribs, asking, "How are you feeling now?"
"Much better," Vereesa said. "The Healing Potion made by your Alchemist friend really works wonders."
Jesse licked his lips, recalling Ursula sweating profusely in the Alchemy Room, and surprisingly feeling a bit homesick for Stormwind.
Looking around at the dark dwarf ruins, it felt as if they were on a completely different world, so alien and separate.
Yet these two worlds were almost divided only by the Redridge Mountains.
"Are you ready to leave?" he asked.
"Almost."
"Let’s leave after eating."
Jesse arranged the firewood he had collected on the ground and then picked up some stones to build a small stove, placing a thin slab on top as a makeshift grill.
"Do you still have any Mana Potion?" Jesse asked.
Vereesa shook her head.
"Darn it," Jesse scratched his head and said, "I’ll try casting spells with what little energy I have left."
"Watch this," Vereesa said as she snapped her fingers, igniting a fire next to the firewood with a burst of Arcane starlight, instantly setting the wood inside ablaze, leaving Jesse staring in amazement.
"Have you learned any ignition spells?" he inquired.
"The fire elements here are abundant, and it’s easy to ignite them with Arcane magic," Vereesa remarked.
"Alright, enough talking," Jesse grumbled helplessly, "easy peasy…"
Surprisingly, the half-dead trees in the Burning Steppes were quite resilient to burning, heating up the rocks without needing extra firewood.
Jesse sliced meat from the pig and laid it on a stone slab, causing it to sizzle as the oil dripped onto the charcoal, producing white smoke. The aroma of the grilled meat made Vereesa gaze hungrily without being able to look away for a long time. After eating their fill, Jesse sat beside her, watching Vereesa enjoying the meat with a dagger in one hand and meat in the other.
Leaning against the wall behind, feeling sleepy but unable to sleep, after all, it’s not safe here enough.
After eating their fill, the two of them quickly packed up and headed towards the direction of the mountain, by now it was close to dawn.
As they were about to leave the ruins, Vereesa suddenly hesitated, stopped at a corner, and glanced back.
Jesse nodded silently, looked towards the wall, and indeed saw Wyrmkin coming from the other side of the street towards the direction where the dragon was dead.
There were two Wyrmkin Mageweavers and a tall Wyrmkin warrior in dark heavy armor, given Jesse and Vereesa’s current condition, it was basically impossible to deal with them.
Vereesa leaned in and whispered, "I’m worried that the mountain over there is already filled with Wyrmkin, can you hear it, there are voices talking over there."
In the howling wind, of course, Jesse couldn’t hear anything clearly, but he knew that listening to Vereesa at this time was definitely right.
"Then we can only go back," he whispered.
Vereesa nodded, and the two of them decisively turned back. After walking for a while, they could already see Wyrmkin approaching from the south.
They sneaked through the streets, hiding behind the ruins’ walls, Vereesa kept looking towards Blackrock Mountain as they moved forward.
"There seem to be enemies on the mountain too," she whispered. "We need to change direction and leave this place."
"I’ll follow your lead," said Jesse.
Based on Vereesa’s past tracking of Orcs, it was wise to trust her instincts about the enemy’s movements. Jesse knew she was reliable in this regard.
The two of them used the ruins as cover and headed towards a larger dwarven city to the west. Along the way, they encountered Wyrmkin patrols searching for the culprit who had killed a young dragon.
The city seemed much larger than before, leading Jesse to believe they had reached the true ruins of Thaurissan Castle.
Unlike the broken walls in the game, this place was like a huge ghost city shrouded in darkness. The partially destroyed black structures had not lost their grandeur and instead appeared more solemn.
Not only was the atmosphere eerie, Jesse could feel a chilling cold that was completely different from before, even compared to the Burning Steppes.
Vereesa led Jesse to a spot behind a stone building. As they were about to exit through a collapsed doorway, she suddenly stopped and pressed against the wall.
After looking outside, she said, "There are many Wyrmkin ahead."
"Encirclement?" Jesse asked.
"I think so," Vereesa said. "It’s unlikely we can sneak past from here."
She pointed upwards, and Jesse peeked through a crack to see a Wyrmkin Mageweaver standing on a high broken wall, overlooking the street below.
"So, Invisibility Potion?" Jesse said.
"Yes," Vereesa took out a bottle. "Then we’ll meet up in that distant building, hopefully we can shake off these Wyrmkin there."
"Your potion might last longer than mine," Jesse carefully observed the position of the building. "It seems this potion relies on one’s own magical power."
"I can try to dispel my own invisibility effect," Vereesa said as she drank the invisibility potion. Jesse followed suit, silently counting seconds.
Soon, he felt his surroundings shimmering, unable to see clearly as if submerged in water, everything fuzzy and unclear. The previous knowledge of building locations completely scrambled… moving forward slowly with a vague intuition.
However, at that moment, he felt like he saw something.
Faintly, it seemed like there were moving figures in the distance, those shadows were so short, not like humans, not like Orcs, and definitely not like Wyrmkin.
Instead, they seemed like dwarves.
Why couldn’t even Vereesa nearby see them, but those dwarves in the distance were so clear? In a daze, he felt like those dwarves were staring at him.
How could this be happening? Isn’t invisibility supposed to make you unseen by others? Why were those dwarves staring at him, their gazes moving as he moved?
Time felt incredibly long in invisibility, especially when those dwarf apparitions were staring at him, everything became even slower.
Jesse felt his heart beating faster, and a guess popped into his mind.
The light began to converge, things in his field of vision slowly materializing, the invisibility wore off, and Vereesa not far away also emerged from invisibility.
Jesse noticed that her complexion didn’t look too good.
"Ghost, is it?" Jesse asked.
"I think so," Vereesa said, taking out the Blessed Wizard Oil. "Damn, one trouble after another."
