Chapter 295: Ruins Ablaze
After the dragon swooped overhead, all was suddenly quiet, the eerie silence enveloped the surroundings, but they could still hear the distant sound of massive wings slicing through the air, circling overhead.
Jesse took advantage of this moment to cast an Arcane Intellect, continuing to chant the Mage Armor spell.
At that moment, Vereesa suddenly looked towards the west.
"Here it comes."
The wind whistled through the wings, followed by a hoarse cry. Jesse had just finished chanting the spell, picked up the bottle of Mana Potion but hadn’t had time to open the bottle cap… Vereesa effortlessly leaped onto the nearby wall, took a few steps up to a higher place, with her bow already pulled taut towards the sky!
The shadow of the black dragon suddenly emerged from the dust, breathing a flame under the wall where the elves stood. The elf easily leaped to avoid it, and the flames hit the ground, scattering debris everywhere.
Though Jesse barely dodged the direct impact, he was made unsteady by the shockwave, and the Mana Potion in his hand shattered.
He turned to see the black dragon brushing against the ground, and with a swish through the smoke and fire, two cold arrow sounds rang out. The giant beast was hit in the neck, staggered, but flapped its wings to rise once more. In the heat, he steadied himself against the wall, held his magic wand aimed at the passing black dragon, quickly cast the Curse of Weakness, and the black dragon screeched in the air before disappearing again.
Struck, Jesse felt the magic truly seeping into the monster’s body, but he wasn’t sure how much of an effect this Curse of Weakness would have on a creature that large.
"We should leave this place," he said.
Vereesa nodded towards the other side of the street, and Jesse left the wall to join her.
After running down the mountain continuously, he suddenly launched again after a brief calm, feeling a sharp pain in his windpipe and a taste of rust in his mouth.
He gasped for breath while feeling the medicine on his body, only to find that the medicine on the bandages had been shattered. While running, he reached into his bag and fumbled, pulling out a bottle of Mana Potion to quickly drink. The eerie sound of the swirling airflow in the sky continued, with the black dragon still hovering nearby.
The two of them darted into another street, and within seconds Vereesa suddenly stopped in her tracks. Jesse also felt it – the black dragon was in the dust right in front of them.
The dark shadow suddenly became clear, flames enveloping the black dragon’s already burning gaping mouth as it lunged straight towards them. Both of them ran to either side of the street.
Jesse shrank between the buildings on the street, feeling a terrifying wave of heat rush to his back. Even with the protection of Mage Armor and the cover of his cloak, it was unbearable.
Faint purple shadows on the street were swirling amidst the rising black smoke. The heat wave toppled several nearby walls, filling the air with smoke and booming noises.
Jesse raised his magic wand and looked towards the sky, waiting for the black dragon to appear again, but the wind was gone.
Just as he was observing the heights, a series of booming sounds echoed as walls collapsed behind him!
The black dragon was behind him!
Jesse jumped to the side as a dark shadow engulfed him from behind. The monster’s wings brushed past, causing his cloak and robe to flutter wildly. Jesse felt like the wind alone could knock him down, and he was almost hit by the young dragon.
With a thunderous sound of footsteps, the black dragon roared and charged back onto the street, trying to take off again.
Jesse chased after, stepping on the still burning flames, pointing at the back of the black dragon and shouting loudly, "Kibimophrosas!"
He wasn’t sure if he pronounced it correctly, but as the black dragon’s body began to lift, a burst of bright red flames suddenly exploded on its shoulder, resembling blood spurting out.
The black dragon let out a roar, tilting its body and suddenly turning its head in mid-air.
Jesse saw its golden snake eyes.
"Oh no!"
He immediately jumped into the nearby wall and climbed out a few steps. A meteor-like stream of lava exploded the wall he had just hidden behind, sending him flying into the air, crashing into the wall before falling to the ground.
Jesse coughed as he struggled to get up, feeling too weak to move properly. After a cough, he spat out a bit of blood, unsure if he was internally bleeding or if a tooth had been knocked loose.
After the explosion, the Mage Armor on the clothes shimmered like a colorful crystal, much brighter than before. According to the spell book, this was probably caused by excessive magic damage, indicating that the spell was close to collapsing.
Although the Mage Armor is not a spell shield or barrier, it doesn’t mean it can withstand unlimited attacks here without failing.
Finally regaining strength, pain followed. The black dragon in the sky let out roars of anger.
Looking back, blue threads fiercely pierced the swaying shadow in the sky. The black dragon tried to fly away several times but couldn’t dodge any of them, roaring as flames spewed onto the ground.
He was attacking Vereesa on the ground!
"Saenor… come out!"
"Master… why do you want me to come out now! I don’t want to come out!" imp quivered and shouted.
"Stop talking, help me!"
Jesse immediately got up and ran over, seeing flames cascading down from the sky, shattering bricks and igniting black smoke each time. But soon after, another thread accurately pierced another spot.
Every time the black dragon was hit, it couldn’t help but roar like it was going crazy.
After a few times, the monster angrily folded its dragon wings and spat flames into the street, causing a large amount of flying rocks and dust!
"My magic can’t even hurt that dragon at all… Master!" imp cried out miserably from behind.
Jesse hadn’t had time to respond yet when the monster landed and spewed out a large swath of fire snakes as if from a military flamethrower. He quickly dodged and crawled forward, passing through the burning flames to get behind the black dragon.
At this moment, the black dragon raised its chest and shattered a stone wall in front with a swipe of its front paw. A silver figure flashed out of the broken wall, and the elf actually took advantage of the dragon’s attack just now, grabbing his arm and agilely jumping onto the back of his neck!
The black dragon angrily growled and raised its wings again, trying to fly up in a frenzy. Jesse released the Shadow-cursed Scorch Curse again, bursting the membrane of the black dragon’s wings. With a howl of pain, it only managed to flap half of its wings before putting them down, looking back in pain.
Before it could spit flames at Jesse, Vereesa grabbed hold and pulled a deep gash in the scales of its neck with a knife. The blade and dragon scales clashed and clattered loudly. The black dragon raised its neck and howled, its mouth’s flames turning into billowing black smoke, as the monster began shaking its snake-like long neck violently, trying to shake Vereesa off. The elf agilely jumped onto its back, but before she could steady herself, the monster immediately turned its head back, trying to bite her.
Jesse once again used a Scorch Curse to explode on the black dragon’s face, the blood-red flames bursting at the corners of its mouth, erupting a purplish-red blood. The black dragon tilted its head, gasped, looking a bit dazed.
Jesse raised his magic wand, decisively draining the life force from the panting black dragon. The dragon felt the magic tearing at it and let out a pained howl, finally unable to keep up with Vereesa’s pace.
He gasped for a moment, and the long tail behind him rose up like a war hammer.
His target was not himself, but Vereesa!
The tail tip swept diagonally across his back like an iron cone. The elf flipped and jumped to dodge this attack. The black dragon turned and swiped a claw towards the falling Vereesa. Vereesa barely avoided this wide-ranged sweep, almost losing her balance.
The giant beast roared fiercely, sounding like coughing and a sinister chuckle. He felt like he was gaining the upper hand, roaring as if to boost his fighting spirit, swaying his body to pounce and chase.
Jesse continued to absorb the black dragon’s life force. The injuries from the fireball had gradually healed, revitalizing him once more.
Despite Jesse’s full absorption attempts, the black dragon only became slightly sluggish in movement. Its emotions seemed more agitated, roaring in a strange manner as it relentlessly attacked Vereesa. The monster had gone mad, biting and scratching continuously. Even though Vereesa evaded all of them, the attacks pushed her further away. The black dragon charged into the dust, making it difficult for Jesse’s magic to reach.
The black dragon roared wildly, causing ruins and walls to collapse one after another. Vereesa could only barely evade the danger, almost getting caught by the black dragon several times.
Jesse chased after the black monster, shouting in the Dragon language, "Black creature! Over here!"
Upon hearing these two shouts, the black dragon suddenly turned its head.
"Lowly … trash!"
Jesse stopped in his tracks, could it really be effective?
The black dragon moved back a big step, raised its long tail high and swung it towards Jesse. He jumped to the side with all his might, rolled on the ground and stood up. The dragon’s tail slammed accurately where Jesse was standing, sending tiles flying and creating a pit in the stone path.
If hit by that, he would probably be turned into a pulp directly.
For the young dragon, it seemed effortless. It lifted its tail and slammed it again. Jesse staggered back a few steps to narrowly avoid it. The flying debris almost knocked him unconscious when hitting his forehead.
The young dragon suddenly stepped back, sweeping its tail again. Jesse ducked his head just in time. He heard someone shouting somewhere, "Fool, look out! You’re toast!"
Jesse looked up and saw fire burning in the eyes of the young dragon.
"Oh darn…" The fire illuminated the ruins and shot straight at Jesse. He struggled to climb over the nearby broken wall, then felt the space behind him suddenly shift. He was propelled into the air, somersaulted a few times, and landed hard.
His Mage Armor was completely ruined, something in the cloth bundle clinked noisily, perhaps breaking a few potion bottles.
However, he didn’t have time to check anything as lava and debris exploded around him, some splashing onto his body.
Although it didn’t immediately burn, some fragments flew onto his neck, causing him to cry out in pain.
But at least he was still alive. The burning sensation indicated that his nerves were working fine. A red sigil appeared on his skin, showing that the imp had provided a Blood Pact to protect him.
"I’m powerless, master… You… you’re on your own now!" the imp wailed from somewhere.
"Your mother…" Jesse whispered to himself, unable to hold back vomiting a mouthful of blood.
Trouble was far from over. The black dragon flapped its wings and swooped towards him. Sensing the massive creature getting closer, Jesse quickly squeezed into a crack in the wall. The building shook as the black dragon’s huge body crashed through!
A series of explosions, impacts, Jesse felt his ears almost deafened. The foul breath of the black dragon was almost right next to him. However, he couldn’t hear the roars, only relying on instinct to dodge the dragon’s attacks, searching for cover behind walls. He could feel that the black dragon’s speed had slowed significantly since its initial descent, taking several breaths after smashing through walls before chasing him again.
Taking a quick breath, Jesse turned his head and saw the black dragon pushing through a wall, revealing its ferocious face, mouth oozing lava-like saliva, and its chest bulging and glowing.
Suddenly, a shiny arrow flew into the dragon’s mouth from the side, causing the dragon to sway and look towards the source. Another arrow shot into its eye.
Vereesa stood firmly against a wall in the distance, calmly aiming her bow. The black dragon spat out a burst of flames, but the Farstriders stood their ground. With a precise shot, an arrow flew into the dragon’s throat, causing it to vomit a large amount of molten lava.
The black dragon realized something was wrong. It shook its head and screamed, stepping sideways and using its wings to shield itself from more arrows.
Vereesa hesitated in her shooting, seeming to run out of arrows. Each shot became more cautious. Seeing the dragon use its wings for protection, she held onto an arrow glowing with Arcane light.
The monster retreated while thrashing its tail, clearing a large area of debris. It seemed to have trouble seeing clearly, making its way to an open space. Noticing the two people behind were not following, it decisively spread its wings.
Trying to escape, the black dragon flapped its wings to lift off. As it flew halfway up, Vereesa gazed into its eyes and shot an arrow, hitting its neck. The dragon let out a howl, almost falling, but it continued to flap its wings with all its might to ascend higher.
Suddenly, Jesse ran nearby, aiming a Firebolt that shot up high like a streaking monkey. Before reaching the black dragon, the Firebolt hit it and extinguished.
Well done, I know you did your best…
He jumped onto a broken wall, reaching as high as possible. Without stabilizing himself, he cast a Scorch Curse at the dragon, which was still trying to rise higher.
A red flame exploded from the base of the monster’s tail, scattering shattered scales and a rain of purple blood.
The black dragon roared a few times, then dropped a lot in height. Jesse shouted "Scorch Curse" again, and this time a burst of blood light exploded from the dragon’s chest. The giant beast flapped its wings a few times but couldn’t hold on anymore. It lost its strength, fell, and ultimately landed among some broken walls in the distance.
Vereesa chased after, and Jesse jumped down the wall to follow. When they got closer, black and red thick smoke suddenly appeared ahead…
It was unlike any flames they had seen before!
Jesse was very familiar with this.
"Vereesa! Don’t go over there! Run! Run fast!"
