Chapter 291: Is It Possible for Dragonhawk?
The next afternoon, Jesse and Vereesa arrived at Lakeshire with the caravan. Gazing at the town on the mountain from afar, Jesse noticed Vereesa’s elven eyes fixed on the town.
After getting off the carriage, she eagerly ran to the edge of the bridge, feeling the cool breeze over the lake, holding onto her hood, carefully looking at the red-tiled buildings on the other side of the lake.
"Do you like this place?" Jesse asked as he walked over.
"Don’t you like it?" Vereesa replied. "This is how I imagined human cities in the past, a lakeside town with rugged mountains. Stormwind is not ugly, just a bit chaotic."
Jesse adjusted the position of the backpack he was carrying and asked, "How did you come to Stormwind?"
Vereesa looked back at him and said, "A dragonhawk took me to Menethil Harbor, then I took a boat here."
"Can outsiders ride dragonhawks?" Jesse asked.
"Of course not," Vereesa said as she walked across the bridge.
The two walked into the inn in Redridge, found a corner to sit, and Jesse persistently asked, "Is there no chance at all? I mean, riding a dragonhawk?"
"At least, dragonhawks from Quel’Thalas have never been ridden by outsiders," Vereesa said.
"What about Kael’thas Sunstrider?" Jesse asked.
At the mention of that name, Vereesa’s expression stiffened, and she asked, "You know him too?"
"Yes, he is from Lordaeron," Jesse said.
"Yes," Vereesa nodded, whispered, "If you want to know what he did in Quel’Thalas, ask Sylvanas. I don’t know and I don’t care."
The sommelier came over and she casually mentioned, "Not only the Blood Elves in Quel’Thalas raise Dragonhawks, but Forest Trolls also do."
Jesse glanced at Vereesa and told the sommelier, "For the Roast Raptor, add roasted apples, then a steamed pumpkin, a scrambled egg roll, a few cookies, oh and also some jerky, black mushroom snacks, a portion of dry bread crumbs, and a chunk of cheese for three."
The sommelier hesitated, looking at the elves and then at Jesse, asking, "Is it too much food, sir?"
"We will take some to go," Jesse said. "And two more cups of milk, please."
As the sommelier left, Jesse exclaimed in shock, "You want me to go find a Dragonhawk with Zul’Aman? You might as well shoot me now and save the travel expenses."
Vereesa smiled softly, saying with a chuckle, "Of course not, I meant to say it’s not just the elves who can tame Dragonhawks, you can try finding wild ones yourself. Dragonhawks don’t only reside on Quel’Thalas Island, they’re also found to the south of Quel’Thalas, in areas where the trolls can’t reach. I believe some people from Stratholme have also seen Dragonhawks. They are very intelligent creatures, they won’t attack you on sight if they sense no hostility."
"Can you teach me how to train a Dragonhawk?" Jesse asked.
"I’m not even good at riding one," Vereesa said. "I was brought here from Quel’Thalas by a Dragonhawk rider."
Jesse disappointedly scratched his head and said, "Looks like there’s no hope, how about an ostrich then?"
Hearing this, Vereesa glanced at him and asked, "Are you obsessed with collecting different species? Do you want to ride every animal that can be ridden?"
"Why not give it a try when you have the chance?" Jesse looked at a few people who had just entered the tavern and said, "I have already ridden a gryphon, a horse… Oh, I realize my progress is quite slow. When will I be able to ride across the whole continent…"
"Have you ever ridden a gryphon?" Vereesa asked curiously, "What was it like?"
"To be honest…" Jesse thought for a moment with his head down, and at that moment the milk was placed in front of him.
He took a sip of the cold milk with a faint smell of cow dung, trying hard to recall the time he spent riding the dark gryphon in the Hinterlands. He couldn’t figure out how to describe it for a while, until memories of what Greed had talked about on the carriage that day resurfaced in his mind.
"I couldn’t ride the gryphon, so I was half in a daze the whole time. Everything I saw was a blur, and that gryphon almost shook my guts out. You should get to know Greed Thunderfist, he’s the Gryphon Rider who took me for a ride. Kaffir mentioned him to you, didn’t he?"
"Oh, right, he’s a Gryphon Rider from the Wildhammer clan," Vereesa nodded and said, "I almost forgot about this. I’m looking forward to meeting him more and more. I’ve heard many stories from Quel’danil rangers cooperating with the Wildhammer against trolls when I was young."
Vereesa didn’t seem genuinely sincere in saying these words. She didn’t like humans and definitely didn’t have any good feelings towards dwarves. Her tone was obviously polite.
Of course, Jesse didn’t think Greed would treat Vereesa well either, especially with Vereesa’s strange distance towards other races. Who knows what weird things might happen then, they might even start arguing immediately.
After the sommelier finished setting up the food, Jesse packed items such as cold cheese, dry bread, and dried mushrooms into a bag that could be stored, while observing the various people in the hotel.
Lakeshire Inn always had many guests of different kinds, even Vereesa didn’t seem out of the ordinary among them.
Just behind Jesse sat a half-elf speaking with a Goldshire accent. If Jesse hadn’t glanced behind him when the sommelier was serving, he would have thought it was some silly son of a farmer gossiping behind his back.
However, Jesse was not concerned about mixed races or adventurers from the north or south, but about the Wyrmcultists mentioned by Malin.
Having seen a father and son controlled by a black dragon before, Jesse believed that with his sensitivity to the powers of darkness, he should be able to sense those in the crowd affected by its influence.
Yet, even when night fell completely, Jesse didn’t notice anything amiss, not even a suspicious trace of strangers whispering to each other. They continued eating until very late, even ordering another batch of food, as this was the last inn on their journey and they wanted to eat their fill.
As he watched a dwarf and a human arguing passionately in the distance, Vereesa said, "You seemed absent-minded all evening today."
Jesse glanced at her, seeing that she had eaten her grilled catfish clean down to the fish bones, and feeling there was no need to hide anything, he told her about his encounters with the Wyrmkin here and what Malin had informed him about the Wyrmcultists.
After listening, Vereesa fell silent for a while and asked, "Is it possible that we might encounter a dragon?"
"No way?" Jesse said, "If there were dragons around, the scouts at Stonewatch Keep should have seen them by now."
But as he said this, he remembered the scale picked up by the mountaineer.
"Well… I don’t know, there is indeed a possibility. If we really encounter one, do you have any plans?"
"I don’t think we have much choice, Jesse," Vereesa said.
Jesse asked, "So we have to fight?"
Vereesa said, "Dragons can fly. Simply running away won’t give us an advantage, so we have to fight as much as possible. Even if we can’t kill it, we need to show how strong we are, so it won’t recklessly chase us. This way, our chances of escape will be higher, and we can make effective use of the Invisibility Potion. Otherwise, I don’t think the effect duration will even allow us to run out of its sight."
"You’re right," Jesse said, "It’s my fault for only thinking about the possibility of encountering a dragon now."
"It’s better to consider it now than to face it unprepared, Jesse. And I believe we are well-prepared enough," Vereesa said.
