Chapter 289: Demon Business
The Slaughtered Lamb had returned to its usual appearance, except for Zardeth.
Since the gathering that day, he hadn’t been seen. According to Surena, he had left for Ironforge and might be gone for a month or two.
The small room in the practice room had been quiet for a few days after Gakin’s death, but strange noises had started up again recently.
Jesse carried a bag of herbs and walked over to open the door. Inside, she saw Surena trembling as she chewed and swallowed something.
"Erlan, I have something to ask you."
Hearing a noise from outside, Surena got scared and quickly climbed to the edge of the bed, wrapping herself in a blanket. Seeing Jesse, she exclaimed, "Oh, why didn’t you knock on the door?"
"I don’t care what you two are doing. Once I finish talking, you can continue," Jesse said.
Surena tousled her hair and leaned back, not bothering to cover herself with any clothes. Erlan ran to the side to put on pants and said, "Darn it, Jesse, if you had been a few minutes later, I would have finished."
"I’m just helping you extend the time a bit," Jesse said.
Erlan gave Jesse a sideways glance, smirked, and said, "I feel like I’m getting to know you again."
The two of them entered the central hall and went to a slightly chilly basement. Erlan sat shirtless in a chair, leaning against the cold wall. It must be said that these guys were really tough.
"So, what’s the matter?"
Jesse said, "I wonder what you did with the demon’s body."
"You mean the one you stabbed?" Erlan asked.
"Yes."
"Sold it."
"Sold it? Sold it to who?"
"Don’t look so surprised," Erlan said. "I didn’t take it to the market to sell. You don’t think the whole Kingdom of Stormwind only deals with demons with just our group, do you?"
Jesse nodded, "I do know of some other warlocks."
"Not just warlocks, I know of a group in Darkshire to the south," Erlan said. "And Mor’zul, you know Mor’zul, Gakin must have mentioned him to you, you two were so close before. Then there are a few people in Moonbrook to the west, some of them also deal with dwarves, selling things from demons for money or doing alchemy experiments, but they aren’t really interested in Shadow Magic itself."
"How much did you sell it for?" Jesse asked.
Erlan waved his hand and said, "I don’t have much money, just a few silver coins, only a few cents left when I waited for the buyer. Demon hearts are the most valuable. Without a heart, everything else will decay quickly. I just wanted to get rid of the body quickly. You don’t want a share of this, right? But it’s fine, after all, you’re the one who killed."
He took out six silver coins from his pocket and said, "By the way, I should split half with you."
Jesse glanced at the six silver coins, then looked at Erlan, reached out and said, "This is about right."
"You rascal." Erlan chuckled and said, "During the time when the Orcs had just left, towards Redridge and further east, there were many demon bodies. Not to mention succubus, I heard they found a creature taller than an Ogre. Do you think on the other side of the Dark Portal, there are creatures like that everywhere?"
Jesse said, "I have no idea. Do you want to go check it out?"
"Haha, I’m not tired of living yet," Erlan said.
"By the way," Jesse asked, "If one becomes skillful in summoning spells, summon one to kill and sell for profit, wouldn’t that be a good way to make money?"
"You’re not the first one to think like that," Erlan said with a slightly mocking smile. "And some have done it already, but it didn’t end well. The dwarves from Shadowforge City warned that doing too many summoning rituals in a short time would damage the brain. One person didn’t believe it and when he died, his eyes turned into purple water. I don’t know if it’s true, but even Gakin, that lunatic, wouldn’t summon several imps in one day."
"By the way, don’t you mages have a saying? ‘Don’t mess around with the Twisting Nether’, I guess that’s what it means."
Jesse said, "That’s indeed a saying."
"Is it about this matter?" Erlan asked.
"Just this."
"Don’t forget to teach me a couple of moves another day, Jesse, in exchange for those few silver coins," Erlan stood up and said, "The work by the stonemason is getting scarcer now. I also need to find a way to learn some life-saving skills. At least I need to stay alive until payday, don’t you think?"
After saying that, he pulled up his pants and hurried into the passage.
Jesse sighed as he watched his disappearing figure, then he walked into the opposite passage to reach Ursula’s side.
Ursula, flipping through a book, said, "I thought you finally joined the two of them."
"Joined what?" Jesse asked, feeling a bit dizzy for a moment, "Are they that open?"
"Erlan heard that there are several more outside," Ursula said, "Surena probably doesn’t care either."
The alchemist raised his head, puffed out his chest, took a deep breath and asked, "What are we going to do this time?"
"Fadeleaf." Jesse handed the bag to Ursula and said, "Take a look at how many useless weeds or other herbs are in this bag of Fadeleaf."
"Are you mixing weeds in with the herbs you buy?" Ursula said mockingly.
"It’s cheap," Jesse said as he sat down.
Ursula sifted through the herbs for a while, then stood up straight, took a deep breath, and said, "There aren’t any weeds in here."
"Huh?" Jesse looked inside.
"It’s all Fadeleaf," Ursula said. "There’s even a Liferoot here… This bag is at least two gold coins short, maybe even three. Jesse, are you sure you didn’t pick up the wrong bag and accidentally use your savings?"
Jesse hesitated for a moment and said, "I didn’t spend much less money. This just shows that the Herbalist I found is really skilled!"
Ursula glanced at him and asked, "What about the Liferoot? Are you planning to take it back or something?"
"Isn’t Liferoot used for making Healing Potion?" Jesse asked.
"Two recipes," Ursula said. "One is a potent potion made with troll blood, where all ingredients are cheap except Liferoot, which I can provide. It grants you regenerative abilities like a troll for a long time… Well, that’s what the writers say. I think it’s not as exaggerated as that, but the effects are visible."
"The other one is a strong Healing Potion that can stabilize a severely injured person."
"Let’s go with the second one," Jesse asked. "Do you have any Fire Protection potion here?"
Ursula said, "No, although I’ve made them, I’ve never used one myself. I suppose they work like the Fire Protection Barrier of mages? I believe a Magic Resistance Potion that boosts elemental resistance should work partially."
Jesse didn’t remember most potion recipes, but he knew exactly how to make both types of Fire Protection potion, as they were highly sought after in the game he used to play.
The basic one needs fire glands, and the advanced one requires elemental flames.
Fire glands are obtained from fire-breathing beasts and dragons. Despite Jesse living in this world for a while, he hadn’t encountered any ordinary beasts that could breathe fire, let alone dragons. They were probably very rare materials here, possibly costing more than he imagined.
As for elemental flames… Jesse had heard about how difficult it was to obtain Elemental Earth in the Alchemy Room before. He couldn’t even picture similar materials or how they were stored.
"Okay then," Jesse said, "Let’s start like this."
"Come get the medicine tomorrow morning, Jesse," Ursula said, "I made as many Invisibility Potions and Magic Resistance Potions as I could."
