Chapter 288: The Reason for Vacation
In the morning, Jesse came to ask Malin for time off. When Malin saw Jesse, he asked first, "Where have you been these days, Mr. Seso?"
"Does the master need me for something?"
"There’s no rush." Malin glanced at the bookshelf beside him and said, "The key is, ever since you came back from Dalaran, Amy has been too lazy to help me tidy up. As a hired assistant, you can’t just slack off for so many days, right?"
"No way." Jesse said, "A few days ago, before class, I came in the morning to clean up, but I had left before you arrived."
"Could it be a mistake? I always feel like something isn’t quite clean." Malin put down his feather pen and said, "By the way, I need to tell you that the investigation into the undead incident in Grand Town has revealed some results. It’s the matter you mentioned to me last time with Master Dumas, that Mr. Thomas Wolfe admitted to practicing Necromancy without any defense."
"Was he trying to bring back his wife?" Jesse asked.
"Yes."
"Is there anything else?"
"Mages are still investigating."
Jesse thought to himself, it seems that being associated with a Death Knight is not just about Necromancy, it might even involve treason. Then, it won’t be something the Wizard’s Sanctum can handle.
Malin said, "He and his wife, Mrs. Eliza Wolfe, were a model couple even many years ago in Raven Hill. Mr. Wolfe once studied alchemy in Dalaran."
Jesse asked in surprise, "Is he the Alchemist from Dalaran? Then why is he here?"
Malin continued, "During the time after the Gurubashi War, he came to South Elwynn to investigate the effects of troll magic on the fields and plants. It was there that he met his wife. After they fell in love, he decided to stay in Raven Hill to help the locals rid themselves of the evil magic of the Gurubashi. Within a few years, he became a well-known healer in the south. Oh, and he is also from Alterac."
A geography and botany expert from Dalaran?
This is why this guy can study and discover Necromancy and create abominations that haunt Duskwood, even when most people can’t understand the demonic writings he reads.
The Death Knight was at least partly right, Mr. Wolfe is indeed a genius.
"I can’t hear any trace of Alterac in his accent," Jesse said.
"After all, he has been in the south for too long," Malin said. "And they say he is fluent in many languages, including Elvish and Dwarven, even the language of trolls. Perhaps learning these languages has smoothed out his own accent."
Jesse asked, "How should we handle him? Does Master Dumas have a decision?"
"Still discussing," Malin said. "After all, his contributions cannot be ignored, as for his motives… his love for his wife, many in Raven Hill can attest to it. Love may have clouded his judgment."
"Master Dumas suggested keeping him in confinement for a while, closely monitoring him, and investigating a few places related to him, including the two houses he used to live in, Raven Hill and Grand Town. I somewhat agree with him, but I have no strong opinion on this matter."
"By the way, you did a great job, Mr Seso."
Jesse nodded, wondering if the future of Duskwood would be brighter than in another timeline.
At that moment, he realized he had almost forgotten his original purpose for coming.
"Master, I actually wanted to request some time off, as I might need to leave Stormwind for one or two weeks."
"Where are you planning to go?"
"I was thinking… about taking a vacation."
"Is everything okay?"
Jesse explained, "I’ve been dealing with a lot lately, from trouble caused by the shadows to the issue with the Wyrmkin. The shadow problem, in particular, has been very stressful for me. I’ve been feeling mentally exhausted, so I thought I could use a change of scenery and relax a bit, maybe go to Lakeshire for some fresh air and to clear my mind."
"Understood," Malin said, "You can go, just be safe and don’t play for too long. Even though the war has ended and the trouble in Redridge Gnoll has reduced a lot from a few months ago, it’s still not a peaceful place. But since you’re going to Redridge…"
"Are there still tasks in Lakeshire?" Jesse asked.
"It’s not exactly tasks," Malin said, "Remember last time when you mentioned that the Wyrmkin might be planning to enter the Redridge area? Last time when Master Andromath and I talked to the king’s officials about this, we found out that they also discovered some related information, but they thought only some mysterious Black Dragon worshippers were active in Lakeshire and the lumber mill, without realizing that Wyrmkin were also appearing."
"Black Dragon worshippers?" Jesse said, "Are you sure there are dragon worshippers? Right in Lakeshire?"
"To be honest," Malin said, "Our cooperation with the royal family in this regard is not that close. It was just mentioned casually in conversation. The way those investigators talked about it, they didn’t seem to take these dragon worshippers seriously, so they just mentioned it casually."
"So my idea is, if you go to Lakeshire, just have a look around to see if there are any suspicious individuals…"
"I understand, Master, I will be careful," Jesse said.
"Of course, resting is the most important, don’t let chasing after some crazies distract you from your main task," Malin said, "And I’m just reminding you, letting you know that Lakeshire is not as peaceful as it seems on the surface."
Indeed, being able to run into town to trick mountaineers into going north to search for treasure, and contacting Wyrmkin to apprehend those under mental control, this is more than just secretive activities, it’s downright chaotic.
Malin continued, "I think you need some time to rest, but since you mentioned wanting to work hard to become an apprentice mage, I didn’t bring it up. Mr. Seso, you’re only eighteen. Although that’s a bit old for an apprentice, you have plenty of time ahead of you. Don’t rush and cause trouble for yourself."
"Thank you, master, I will remember that," Jesse replied.
Malin thought Jesse would stay in Redridge for a week or two to also keep an eye on the Wyrmcultist situation, but he actually only stayed there for one night to rest, so he wouldn’t be able to do much.
However, Malin’s words reminded him that this journey couldn’t only focus on dealing with Orcs; they also needed to pay attention to the Wyrmkin. After all, the Wyrmkin’s influence had already reached near Lakeshire, increasing the chances of encountering them further away.
They not only needed to prepare Shadow Protection Potions, but also bring Fire Protection-related items, as Vereesa didn’t have as many ways to combat fire like he did.
