Chapter 287: Sense of Crisis
Regardless of Kel’Thuzad’s intentions, the Kirin Tor has not taken any action or provided any other information during this time.
Jesse continued with his classes and regular routine, and neither Andromath nor his teacher Malin mentioned anything about the Kirin Tor.
Although he was starting to relax, he couldn’t shake off the feeling that Kel’Thuzad was still involved in this matter.
After all, Teron Gorefiend found it strange that he knew his own name. Who else besides Kel’Thuzad could have told the Death Knight his name and why?
Perhaps it was some kind of reminder. Everything was settled now. Kel’Thuzad wanted Jesse to know that he still had influence over the Wizard’s Sanctum, so Jesse shouldn’t worry unnecessarily and should focus on what he should be doing.
But compared to Kel’Thuzad’s vague suspicions from the other side of Palatine Bay, Jesse was actually more concerned about Gakin.
Not sure how Erlan got rid of the succubus’s body, but it was said that he had hidden in the forest with a group of exiles for a few years during the Orc invasion of Stormwind. Maybe they were used to demons summoned by Orc Warlocks and had their own way of dealing with them.
Classes were over for the day, and Jesse had just come out of the Wizard’s Sanctum when he saw Vereesa sitting in the garden, waving at him when she saw him.
Jesse quickly walked into the garden and asked, "Are you okay? Everything went smoothly?"
"Close call, but I’m fine," Vereesa said. "As for results, I found some plants that look like Fadeleaf… both in smell and appearance, I’ve kept them in the apartment."
"You’re quite fast, less than two weeks, how was Stranglethorn?" Jesse asked.
Vereesa pinched her ear tip and said, "My cloak was damaged by some unknown prickly plant, but other than that, it was fine. There were a lot of crocodiles in the swamp, but they were quite friendly."
Jesse nodded, then suddenly felt something was wrong and asked, "What’s so easy to talk to? Crocodiles?"
"Farstriders need to learn to communicate with animals," Vereesa said. "Leopards, deer, and of course, crocodiles too."
She looked at Jesse’s surprised expression and said, "When I first heard about it when I was young, I also found it unbelievable. Of course, they can’t communicate like humans, but they can understand simple signals from me, like telling them I mean no harm or warning them that they wouldn’t stand a chance if they fight."
"Is it that simple?" Jesse asked in astonishment.
As they chatted about their adventures in Stranglethorn, they walked towards the apartment. Upon entering, Jesse smelled a damp earthy scent.
Sensing Jesse’s reaction, Vereesa quickly apologized, "Sorry about the muddy clothes from the swamp. I haven’t had a chance to wash them. I just arrived at Stormwind this morning, eager to show you what I collected."
Jesse replied, "If you visit my apartment, you’ll see that this is nothing."
Vereesa chuckled, "I didn’t even know where you lived. I always have to find you at the Wizard’s Sanctum."
"By the canal," Jesse said. "I’ll let you know once I have a permanent place to live. I might move out of here anytime now."
In Stormwind, saying you live by the canal is pretty much like not saying anything at all.
"Okay." Vereesa responded as she took out her package of herbs, Jesse opened it and saw many dried plants covered in a little mud.
"You gathered so much." Jesse flipped through them and said, "I will take them to my friend to see how much potion we can make."
"So, when can we set off?" Vereesa asked.
"It may take some time to make the potion. I also need to ask for leave from my teacher. How about the day after tomorrow? You should get a good rest, I guess you haven’t slept properly for several days running back here?"
"I’m worried the Death Knight will leave that place." Vereesa gasped, "I feel more and more nervous the closer I get to that guy."
"No need to worry." Jesse said, "He doesn’t have many places to go. Since he didn’t go looking for the Blackrock Orcs, I think he may have some issues with them. After all, many in the Horde see Gul’dan and his Death Knight as traitors."
"I know, Jesse." Vereesa said.
Jesse nodded, "So, I’ll take these herbs to the Alchemist."
"Oh, I need a new cloak," Vereesa said. "The places we’re going to are either deserts or plains, right? Redridge and Burning Steppes. I know the landscapes and environments there, it seems there aren’t many green grass and plants. My cloak looks too bright and it’s torn too."
"Yours looks much better. If you have a cloak in a similar color, can you lend it to me?"
"Do I look like someone who has two cloaks?" Jesse said. "Let’s go buy one direct. There are two clothing shops in Mage Quarter, very close by."
The elf hesitated.
"You really don’t want to talk to us for a bit?" Jesse said. "What makes them different from me. Oh well, let’s go together. I was planning to buy a new shirt anyway, and turn the old torn one into a scarf."
"A scarf?"
"Last time I went to the north of Redridge," Jesse said. "It was full of dust, charcoal, a gust of wind makes everything dirty, it’s like two different worlds compared to the south. I was there for one night last time, this time I might stay there for a long time, maybe even go further north. I need a mask to cover my nose and mouth, otherwise I’m afraid my lungs will suffer when I come back, what about you?"
"I have my own, but I haven’t used it since coming here," Vereesa said. "This is a good chance to go together."
In the afternoon, Jesse brought Vereesa to the Larson family. The shopkeeper saw Jesse and said, "Here you are again, Mr. Seso. Are you planning to repair clothes this time or buy new ones?"
"Excuse me, sir," Jesse said, "Could you please buy a cloak for this lady elf?"
Vereesa nodded, and the shopkeeper, after glancing at the elf, expressed some surprise, saying, "It’s been a long time since a real elf came to my shop to buy something. Do you have any specific requirements for the cloak?"
"We need a gray or dark brown cloak with a hood, made of fire-resistant material. We may need to go to the north of Redridge," Jesse said.
The shopkeeper went to the back, and Jesse asked, "Aren’t you going to fix that green one of yours while you’re here?"
"No," Vereesa said decisively.
Jesse sighed helplessly.
The shopkeeper brought out two cloaks from the back, one light gray and one dark brown. Vereesa tried on the light gray one first, feeling a bit awkward, and then tried on the dark brown one.
Jesse picked out a linen shirt over here, glancing over at her. The elf stood not far away, turning around to adjust the collar. Her tall figure looked even slimmer under the oversized cloak.
Jesse’s earlier feeling was correct; this time Vereesa wasn’t wearing long boots, and her actual height seemed to be slightly taller than him. Roughly estimating, she was about five foot six to five foot seven.
He must be feeling anxious now, the illusion given by Greed seriously disrupted his self-awareness.
If he doesn’t work harder and eat more meat, he won’t grow at all in a few years.
"This one fits quite well," Vereesa said.
"That’s 31 silver in total, sir, along with these two shirts."
Those words brought Jesse back from his memories of his parents’ heights.
"Well… okay then."
