Chapter 286: Some Kind of Warning?
By the time he got out of bed, it was already afternoon.
Jesse sat up and saw Ursula lying on the shorter chair next to him, covered in a thick blanket that was making him feel a bit hot, with a strong herbal scent coming from it.
She was all wrapped up in her own old clothes, curled up from the cold.
Even though he always complained that Ursula sent him to his death, Jesse had to admit that she really cared for him.
Thinking like this, he found Ursula’s constant encouragement for the Stranglethorn adventure less annoying.
After gently covering Ursula with a blanket, he gathered his things and left the basement.
Considering how messed up his biological clock was, Jesse thought about whether he should have some milk to prepare for sleep tonight.
Isn’t it said that milk helps with sleep? Should I ask Ursula for some sleeping medicine later tonight?
He no longer wanted Molofeel to use hypnosis to put him down. The efficiency of falling asleep as if by a masked anesthetist made him feel strange, fearing that one day he would fall asleep and not wake up.
Thinking about it, he could only go to The Blue Recluse to have some milk and eat something. From last night until now, the only thing he had eaten was some nuts and drank alcohol in the basement. Now his stomach was growling, especially thinking about hot milk making him even hungrier.
Wrapping his cloak tightly, he hurried to the Blue Recluse. Once inside, he skillfully ordered some salted cheese, dry bread slices, and dried fruit, along with a large cup of boiled sheep’s milk, and found a place to sit.
Not long after his food arrived, he saw a familiar figure entering the tavern, it was Amy Malin.
Jesse wanted to wave and call out to her, but he noticed a man of similar age walking with her, talking to her in a friendly tone, and judging by his ring, he was already a proper mage.
As Amy walked in, she casually chatted while scanning the room. Her eyes lit up suddenly when she caught sight of Jesse.
She turned around and said a few words to the mage behind her, then waved her hand towards this direction. Jesse waved back, and the female mage quickly walked over.
The male mage said something, paused in place, then saw Jesse, his expression was indescribable.
After sitting down, Amy asked oddly, "Why do you smell like medicine?"
"Just came back from the Alchemy Room." Jesse glanced over there, and the male mage had already left.
"Is he your boyfriend?"
"Forget it." Amy said, "That guy just became an official mage in his twenties, going around harassing people with that old ring."
"Becoming an official mage at such a young age is impressive," Jesse said.
"Impressive for what?" Amy frowned, "I still have a few years until I’m thirty, then I’ll become one soon too."
"Boyfriend, marriage, and those kinds of things are too troublesome for me. When I become an official mage… No, when I go to Dalaran to join Kirin Tor and then consider it. It’s not unusual for Dalaran mages to start a family at forty or fifty, by then I won’t stand out at all."
Jesse stirred the sediment at the bottom of the cup with a spoon and said, "Well, after all, Aegwynn got married when she was over eight hundred years old, helping to raise the average marriage age of female mages by a lot."
"You little rascal," Amy reached out and patted Jesse on the forehead.
"But do you really believe Aegwynn lived for eight hundred years?"
"Well, that’s what they all say," Jesse muttered.
"Just because everyone says it doesn’t mean it’s true," she said as she looked into the distance and raised her voice, "Madam, I’d like a plate of smoked ham slices and a small glass of lemonade."
She waved her hand, didn’t see a response, and repeated loudly, with a hint of anger in her voice.
Jesse sipped his milk, licked his lips, raised his eyes to look at her, and said, "He’s already gone, don’t be so angry!"
"Isn’t it upsetting to be harassed by such people?" Amy asked. "Have you ever been harassed by a bad woman?"
"Yes," Jesse said. "Bad in ways you can’t imagine."
This really made Amy laugh, she leaned in and asked, "Is he also a magician?"
"Old witch," Jesse said.
"No wonder," Amy said with a smile, "You look like the kind of person who would attract the attention of an old witch in the forest."
Jesse chuckled twice.
"Oh yeah," Amy said, "That guy made me so mad that I forgot all about the important stuff. Old Malin received a letter from Kirin Tor. You haven’t been looking for him these past few days, and he couldn’t find you either, so he couldn’t tell you."
Hearing this, Jesse mumbled to himself. He had been having a streak of bad luck lately, and he was a bit worried that there might be issues on Kirin Tor’s side. But judging from Amy’s expression, everything seemed fine; otherwise, she wouldn’t have been so relaxed.
"Are you still nervous?" Amy asked, "Are you worried that the masters at Kirin Tor are intentionally trying to embarrass you?"
"Not really," Jesse said, "I’m just worried that they might have suspicions."
"Not at all," Amy said, "The letter praises you for being brave, fighting alongside Quel’Thalas’ Farstriders against the Death Knights, while the Army of the Black Dragon is attacking Dalaran…"
"It looks exactly like how Mrs. Vereesa Windrunner described in her letter. She has beautiful handwriting, just like the Elven magic runes I have seen before."
"Do the nobles in Quel’Thalas practice handwriting from a young age?" Jesse glanced at the smoked ham just brought over and asked, "Can I have a slice?"
"Of course," Amy nodded in response.
Jesse stuffed the ham and cheese into a piece of dry bread, taking a bite that was half, and instead of enjoying the scent of the smoked ham, he felt more comfortable with the recognition from the Kirin Tor. Finally, his shadow troubles came to an end.
Taking a piece of cheese from Jesse, Amy whispered, "Don’t you want to know who signed your guarantee letter?"
"Wayne Haliste?" Jesse raised his eyes and said, "That guy investigated me before I left Dalaran, he seems to be a investigator of the Magic Defense Department, right? If my case goes to Kirin Tor, he should be the one looking into it."
"No," Amy said, "It’s Master Kel’Thuzad, the one from the Council of Six. I think you have met him before, right?"
Almost dropping the bread from his mouth, Jesse was so surprised that he quickly bit it and swallowed.
"Did I startle you?"
The female mage joked, but Jesse felt a cold breeze behind his neck.
What does Kel’Thuzad mean? Is it a warning? Offering a reward to make him stop interfering?
Amy seemed to sense his thoughts and said, "Don’t get too excited. He is a key researcher in Orc Black Magic, so it’s normal for him to sign things, right? And he has seen you before too."
Jesse forced a smile and said, "Oh, I see. I thought he noticed my talent at that meeting."
Amy took a sip of her drink and whispered, "You never know."
