Chapter 284: Morning Meeting
Despite getting rid of the escaped succubus, Jesse stayed up all night.
The next morning, he sat in the basement living room of The Slaughtered Lamb, staring straight at the door until Erlan, Surena, and Zardeth arrived, and Ursula came out of the Alchemy Room.
The group sat around the burning campfire, Jarel helped pour the drinks, and Zardeth was the first to ask, "How is the situation with Gakin being handled? Do we need to leave The Slaughtered Lamb?"
"I haven’t heard any news," Surena said. "Erlan has taken care of things on Gakin’s end."
"Don’t worry, it doesn’t involve outsiders after all," Erlan said. "Including the demon’s body, everything has been taken care of. In Stormwind, besides us, not many people know Gakin, so if something happens to him, no one will know. But in Ironforge, there are some who know him. If the dwarves there don’t see him for a while, they might get suspicious."
"I’ll handle Ironforge, they will understand," Zardeth said.
Hearing this, Surena breathed a sigh of relief, lowered her head, and choked out, "Darn it, it’s just so inexplicable."
Zardeth said, "Since we have chosen to come here, we should be prepared for sacrifices. Gakin is well aware of this."
"Jesse," he turned to him and said, "I don’t want you to blame yourself for this. After all, I found the spell and helped him gather the spell materials. I advised him to find an opportunity to try summoning with me and you, but he was clearly too impatient."
Jesse remained silent. Erlan asked, "Why is it that I don’t know anything from the beginning to the end?"
"At first, we asked you to try this spell too, right?" Zardeth told Erlan, "We all know the danger of this spell, that’s why we didn’t get involved in further research…"
"Gakin is dead now," Surena said, "Do you have anything to blame Zardeth for? If it were you, would your fate be better than Gakin’s?"
Erlan picked up the beer beside him, took a big sip, nodded, leaned back in his chair, and fell silent.
"Isn’t there a spell called anti-summon?" Ursula suddenly asked, "Why was he killed by a demon? Did this summoned demon servant not even give Gakin time to cast the Anti-summon Spell for self-protection?"
"I… I don’t know," Surena whispered.
"Because he never intended to cast it," Jesse said, looking at the campfire, "Erlan, Surena, don’t tell me you don’t know what that demon is."
"Now I know."
Zardeth nodded, Ursula remained silent upon hearing this, it was obvious they all knew what Gakin had summoned, especially Erlan.
"I heard what she said when I killed that succubus," Jesse said, "It might be hard to accept, but Gakin willingly became like that."
Speaking of this, he added, "I don’t know if this is under the influence of the wicked succubus magic or not."
Erlan said, "At least he looks quite happy."
"Darn it, Erlan!" Surena shouted, "Are you out of your mind?!"
Erlan slammed the table beside him and shouted, "What do you want me to do, Surena Caledon? Shed tears for that guy’s death, kneel in front of his grave, and offer him a bouquet of flowers? Don’t forget how he used to treat me!"
"And don’t forget who helped you deal with this mess! Who tidied up that room, everything I experienced last night is enough to give me nightmares for days, that self-righteous scum made himself more disgusting than an Orc’s vomit!"
"Don’t say that, Erlan," Zardeth said, "We all appreciate your contributions."
"You jerks!" Surena angrily stood up and walked towards the door, Jesse said, "Surena… don’t be impulsive, let’s at least discuss what to do next."
"Sorry, Jesse, I’m not targeting you, but I don’t want to stay here any longer."
Surena coldly said, not looking back, and walked towards the door.
"Walked away again," Erlan said as he cursed a few times, then sighed and said, "Alright, no matter what we said, I will tell her."
Zardeth nodded and said, "So let’s not try that spell again. From now on, we must be careful with summoning spells. We can’t just casually try them out. The price we paid for our impulsiveness ends here."
"We should wait until everyone is present before attempting it together," Erlan said. "Stop messing around in these small groups. You self-proclaimed talented fools, I’ve had enough. Though I hate that old black dog Gakin, I don’t want to see him die so miserably. Damn it, I can’t forget his face now. It keeps flashing before my eyes, I can even see it when I close my eyes."
"But how do we know which spells are summoning spells and which are other types of magic?" Ursula asked.
"Summoning spells have some common characteristics," Jesse said. "I suppose they involve verbal commitments to communicate with demons in the void. By studying the patterns, we should be able to discern some clues. I’ll try to find records related to these dark magic spells in the Wizard’s Sanctum library, be it language, symbols, or rules, to help us distinguish the authenticity, effectiveness, and classification of the spells we acquire…"
"Why didn’t you do this earlier?" Erlan asked.
Jesse gave him a cold look and said, "It might be because I only recently gained access to attend classes in the Wizard’s Sanctum this year, Mr. Drudgemoor."
"Sorry," Erlan said. "I always forget about you, kid…"
"Do you really have a way?" Zardeth looked at Jesse and said, "I heard that very few people, even among the official mages in the Wizard’s Sanctum, understand languages like Orcish or demonic languages."
"Is exploring language safer than exploring spells?" Jesse asked.
"Indeed it is," Zardeth said. "Since that’s the case, I’ll leave it to you!"
"However, I have learned some things before, and Erlan was not entirely wrong," Jesse said. "I’m just worried about saying the wrong thing, making a wrong judgment, or causing any misguidance… So I’ve been hesitant to share my ideas about these spells with you."
Erlan rubbed his face vigorously upon hearing that.
"There’s no need to doubt yourself, Jesse," Ursula said.
"Ursula is right," Zardeth said. "We are all figuring things out as we go along. Gakin and I always try to make sure each other understands and can make judgments on any ideas we have."
"Got it," Jesse said. "I’ll try to share what I know in the future."
Jesse wasn’t just talking. It was time for the warlocks here to understand more about what he had learned.
He understood how to deliberately counter the influence of shadows, but not everyone here was aware of the warlocks.
If he only relies on his understanding of Demonic through imp to translate it, and then haphazardly tells everyone here, similar problems will inevitably arise again.
