Chapter 280: Shadows of the Old City
After Vereesa set off, Jesse started purchasing Wild Steelbloom and lead bottles from various herb shops and Alchemy Rooms to make Invisibility Potions. He bought extra to make basic Magic Resistance Potions as well.
Just like Ursula said, Wild Steelbloom is not expensive, similar to Briarthorn, and it’s not a big deal for Jesse’s financial situation now.
He bought enough ingredients to make 10 bottles of Lesser Invisibility Potion, and two bottles of Minor Magic Resistance Potion, costing more than seventy silver coins.
If he can make these Invisibility Potions, there should be some left after completing Vereesa’s request, so it can be considered as a future investment.
In the following days, he gathered a lot of information about Badlands and the Shattered Hand outpost under Duchamp’s guidance.
Although the Kingdom of Stormwind doesn’t know much about that area, through information exchange with Ironforge, it was confirmed that Jesse’s guess was mostly right, some of the Shattered Hand Orcs did settle in that area.
However, it couldn’t be confirmed if they were at the location of Kargath Outpost.
Besides attending classes, he also started organizing the part of the dictionary translated by the imp.
Pronouncing Eredun is very difficult for a human, Jesse couldn’t distinguish some of the different sounds, which frustrated the imp but he couldn’t get angry. After a few days of careful training, Jesse started to grasp the pronunciation threshold, at least gaining some insights on pronunciation.
Vereesa has been in Stranglethorn for almost a week now. Considering the travel time from here to Darkshire, then entering Stranglethorn, it would take more than a week back and forth, so Jesse is not in a hurry.
That night, he lay in bed looking at the Demonic materials, suddenly heard someone outside calling his name.
"Jesse… Jesse Seso!"
It was a woman, her voice sounding hysterical and somewhat familiar.
He slid the Demonic materials under the bed, glanced out the window, and saw a familiar figure standing by the canal looking towards his direction.
Knowing that not many people lived here, apart from Greed and the people at The Slaughtered Lamb.
He rushed downstairs and reached the door where Surena saw Jesse and immediately ran over saying, "Jesse… Gakin is in trouble."
"What happened to him?" Jesse asked. "Where’s Erlan?"
"He… I don’t have time to find him now, Jesse, only you can help. I feel like someone is watching him near his house, Jesse, I can sense it… Bring something with you!"
Surena nervously trembling lips, it was already very late, and there were not many people by the canal. Jesse whispered, "Wait here." He went back to pick up the short sword and hid it in his coat, with imp and succubus both staring at him.
Molofeel asked softly, "Do you need help, master?"
"In town, it’s better for you to stay out of sight."
Leaving home, along the way he felt an increasing sense of unease in his heart, vaguely feeling that whatever happened to Gakin might be related to himself.
Did he perform a demon summoning ritual and attract the attention of SI:7 or the Wizard’s Sanctum?
How should he confront the other party?
He pondered on the right way to deal with it in his heart, while keeping an eye on suspicious people in the streets.
Jesse still remembered where Gakin’s home was, in Old Town, opposite the fur shop, that black-tiled standalone dilapidated house.
The last time he was here, Gakin was arguing with Erlan, the noise from inside could even be heard through the window, but this time the windows were shut tight, with no light coming out.
It was quiet all around, with no sign of anyone approaching.
Walking to the window, Jesse leaned in to listen for a while.
Complete silence, not surprising.
"Surena, did you just go inside?"
Surena shook her head and said, "I felt something was off, so I didn’t dare to go in."
"What felt off?"
"I…I can’t explain."
Jesse knew that although Surena had learned some dark magic spells, she wasn’t very skilled in them and lacked practical combat abilities. She might cause trouble in a crisis.
"Then you wait here."
"Be careful, Jesse!"
Jesse nodded and entered the building, walking to Gakin’s door. Just as he was about to knock, he suddenly smelled a very unpleasant sweet scent.
The smell made Jesse feel very uncomfortable, and in his mind, he saw a picture of Molofeel hugging his neck and acting like a crazy person, trying to kiss him and lick his lips and cheeks.
But this strange thought only lasted for a moment, as he felt something lurking in the shadows staring at him, creeping up his neck.
Jesse took two steps forward, picked up a sword, and thrust it towards the darkness in the shadows. There was a sharp cry, and a pale-skinned demon emerged, grabbing his sword blade tightly, with purple blood flowing from its hand.
As Jesse tried to pull out his sword, agile Sayaad suddenly grabbed his hair. Her evil eye locked onto Jesse, staring at him with blue eyes emitting a faint purple light.
"Listen to me, human, there seems to be a misunderstanding between us…"
Her voice was so gentle that any normal person would feel melting upon hearing it. But Jesse was not normal.
He stabbed his sword into her eye, causing the succubus to scream and struggle backward, hitting the wall. Purple demon blood splattered everywhere as she flapped her two small wings, like an angry wasp without a stinger, hopping into the depths of the corridor.
"You’re mad! You must be crazy not to listen to me!"
"Tell me! What happened to Gakin?!" Jesse shouted as he chased after.
"He loved me! Gakin…he loved me!"
Jesse caught up and kicked her to the ground, then stabbed her in the back, pulling her black hair as she fell.
"You know him, right? Tell me, what did I do wrong?" The succubus, with a face full of demon blood, turned her head 270 degrees to stare at Jesse and kept emphasizing, "I just wanted to make him happy, that’s what he wanted…"
Jesse stabbed her in the chest, piercing her demonic heart. The succubus’s head tilted, her eyes went dark, finally stopping to breathe, her body convulsing and curling up.
Jesse could feel her continuously trying to control him with Charm magic. He could guarantee his sanity for now, but couldn’t guarantee he would stay clear-headed the next second.
Seeing this monster, whose face was twisted with anger, struggle, and fear, he couldn’t help but mutter a curse in his native language.
Surena seemed to hear a voice inside and rushed over. Seeing the dead monster, she gasped, her face pale, leaning against the wall and making intermittent gasps.
"What, what is this?"
"Demon." Jesse asked in a controlled voice, "Do you know if Gakin summoned a demon?"
"I don’t know if he really succeeded," Surena said, trembling.
"So you knew there might be a demon coming in, right?" Jesse asked coldly.
Surena hesitated, Jesse glared at her and looked around.
Thankfully, this old, rundown corner house only housed Gakin, otherwise it could have caused trouble. But maybe this guy lived alone to avoid such situations.
