Chapter 278: The Elf’s Friend
After finishing his Orcish language class in the morning, Jesse arrived at Malin’s study with a letter of introduction from Vereesa.
He wanted to peek at the contents, but the letter was sealed carefully with wax bearing the Windrunner Family crest of Vereesa, giving the impression that it had traveled a long journey from Quel’Thalas to Elwynn.
Upon entering, Malin was reciting something and frowned when he saw Jesse come in, muttering something under his breath.
"Master, a letter from the elves has arrived."
Jesse placed Vereesa’s letter on the table, Malin picked it up and said, "It arrived so quickly, this wax seal looks new, the Kirin Tor’s letter hasn’t arrived yet."
"The Elf Mage helped deliver it, I heard it was Ms. Vereesa’s letter so they were very eager," Jesse quickly added.
"It sounds like you have good connections in Quel’Thalas," Malin opened the letter, took out the paper, adjusted his glasses and murmured, "The elven script by Sarah is so beautiful, is this a handwritten letter from Ms. Vereesa…"
It was in Elvish, Jesse thought to himself, unable to understand. Maybe he should learn Elvish sometime.
As Malin read on, his expression grew more serious, until his gaze fixed on a particular spot and did not move.
"Anu, Alu, Nor… Belore… Aron…" he looked up and said, "If my decades of learning Sayaad Language weren’t in vain, this sentence should mean that you have drunk from the Sunwell’s waters."
"Huh?" Jesse was puzzled, "Why would they mention that?"
"Mrs. Vereesa Windrunner says here that she purified the necromantic energy implanted in you by Teron Gorefiend with half a bottle of Sunwell water, ensuring that you no longer carry any harmful necrotic aura that could affect others. Is this true?"
"Yes, Teron Gorefiend…"
"I mean the Sunwell, have you ever tasted the water of the Sunwell?"
"Um…"
"Why didn’t you mention it earlier?"
Jesse tugged at his hair and said, "I did drink a little of the Sunwell water. I just felt that after drinking it, learning Arcane spells still felt slow, perhaps seemed a bit too…"
Malin said, "Not really, Mr. Seso, after all, it healed the injuries you sustained. Otherwise, after being injured by Teron Gorefiend, you wouldn’t have recovered so quickly. Maybe you would still be recuperating and not to consider a little water from the Sunwell as a cure-all. But, um, if only I could have a taste as well."
He shook his head, scanning the letter again, then suddenly said, "I think I know why this letter was delivered so quickly. While most of the wording is formal, there are many places where it’s clear you are quite familiar with Ms. Vereesa. She must think of you as a friend to use these few pronouns."
"So I suppose, in that battle, you weren’t just being chased by Teron Gorefiend, right?"
"I did put up a fight," Jesse said. "After all, I couldn’t just wait to die…"
The old mage nodded and said, "No matter how weak one’s strength may be compared to powerful evil, daring to strike with full force when facing great evil is an extraordinary quality for any race. Even the usually proud elf nobles would truly admire it."
He squeezed the letter and sighed, saying, "Hundreds of years ago, the Tirisfal Guardian faced the Demon King with the courage to confront, achieving feats that were thought impossible for mortals. And it is because of the emergence of such heroes that we have survived various disasters up to today."
Jesse nodded.
"That being said, you still need to study hard for the theory exam, my good student," Malin said sternly. "After experiencing so many dangers, even defeating a Wyrmkin Mageweaver in a duel, failing the apprentice theory exam is unacceptable, Mr. Seso."
Jesse asked, "When is the next Apprentice Mage Exam?"
"Why didn’t you ask about it yourself?"
"I… never thought I would take the test so soon."
"It should be on March 22," Malin said. "You have over a month to prepare. Do you think you can master the material during this time? I can help you register."
"I’m not sure," Jesse said. "But I can try to take the exam."
"Alright," Malin said, "If you can pass in one go, you could break Mr. Sklorn’s record and become the fastest of all my apprentices to enter the apprentice mage stage."
"Anything else? It’s almost noon now, I’m getting ready to go eat," she said.
"Yes," Jesse said, "I have an issue with Necromancy to report."
"Necromancy?" Malin asked, "Is it related to Teron Gorefiend?"
"It’s not my problem," Jesse said. "It’s about a retired doctor in Grand Town, named Thomas Wolfe. I suspect him of researching Necromancy to bring his deceased wife back to life."
"Do you have any evidence?" Malin asked. "It’s a serious accusation, especially now that Darkshire urgently needs various doctors and herbalists."
Jesse said, "There’s a Necromancy presence in his room. As a mage who has fought Death Knights, I believe I can distinguish between shadow and undead aura. I suspect he may have already started attempting Necromancy on his wife. I hope Wizard’s Sanctum can investigate this matter promptly and monitor him, especially given the worsening situation in South Elwynn."
"I’m not responsible for monitoring Necromancy within the kingdom, Mr. Seso," Malin said. "However, Andromath mentioned previously that Lord Bolvar Fordragon has asked Wizard’s Sanctum to pay more attention to the spreading dark forces in South Elwynn. I believe this falls within that scope. Rest assured, I will inform Master Dumas about this when I go to the tower this afternoon."
"About the Wyrmkin’s head, Master Andromath plans to preserve it after making some adjustments. So, you will definitely receive some reward. Are you expecting coins or something else?"
"Can you…" Jesse tugged at his short robe and said, "Could an enchanter enchant this robe for me?"
"Of course," Malin replied, "What would you like?"
Jesse asked, "Is there any enchantment that can improve spellcasting efficiency, like mana, or something…"
Malin asked curiously, "There is an enchantment that can help the wearer stay calm and focused, indirectly enhancing spellcasting efficiency slightly. Of course, if you have a temper issue, this magic won’t turn you into a scholar overnight, just have a small impact."
"Then that’s it, master," Jesse said decisively.
