Chapter 277: Flame Amplification
"What is this?" Jesse asked.
Ursula proudly explained, "Remember when I told you I was experimenting with a new potion? Now, by extracting residual fire element from the gunpowder you gave me, I have achieved the effect I wanted. If the formula is correct, this potion can enhance the user’s connection with the fire element, further strengthening the power of fire magic. Just imagine the price this potion could fetch if sold to Fire Mages at the Wizard’s Sanctum."
"Do you know fire magic, Jesse? You’re the only mage I know, and I recall many mages start with learning fire magic. If not for you, I wouldn’t have the confidence to find someone to test the potion on."
Jesse replied, "Yes, I do. Do you want to try it now? It shouldn’t be dangerous, right?"
Ursula turned around and said, "I already tried it myself. Look, I’m still alive."
"But I don’t know any magic at all, and even if I drink it, I can’t test its true power by myself, right?"
"Alright," Jesse nodded and said, "Let’s go to the practice room and see."
"I knew you’d be willing to help." Ursula took out two bottles of basic Mana Potion and some unused clothes from the cabinet, and followed Jesse to the practice room.
She hung a piece of clothing in front and said, "Let’s try without drinking first, let me see how your fire magic feels in your usual state. Don’t control your magic, just cast it in your most standard state."
"You’re overestimating me," Jesse said. "Being able to cast arcane magic in a standard state is already quite good for me."
"Even better then," Ursula said. "It will be easier to see the effects that way."
Jesse glanced at her unhappily, readying his spellcasting posture and aiming at the piece of clothing.
He softly chanted the Scorch Curse spell, and a gust of fiery wind exploded, blasting off the sleeves of the clothing and setting it on fire instantly.
The pitch-black practice room was suddenly lit up by the flames, and Ursula stared at it in amazement.
"Fire magic…so powerful!"
"Stop joking with me, I practiced countless times to reach this mediocre level," Jesse said. "Give me the potion!"
Ursula handed the potion over and said, "Zardeth mentioned your incredible Shadow Magic. I believe everyone can’t be good at everything, right?"
"Haha, you’re right," Jesse held the bottle and asked, "How much should I drink?"
"Just a small sip will do."
Jesse took a small sip and felt like he was hit by a cheap liquor all of a sudden.
After forcing it down, a burnt taste lingered in his throat. He struggled for a while before managing to cough and asked, "Is this…really not lethal?"
"I never said this stuff tastes good," Ursula said while changing into another outfit. "Have another go quickly and see the effect."
Jesse nodded tightly, focused on the clothes, and chanted the scorching curse. During the spellcasting, he felt something was slightly off.
As the spell was completed, and the magic gesture pointed to an end, a fierce and unusual flame suddenly exploded from the clothes! The flame instantly engulfed half of the room!
"Go!" Jesse sensed something was wrong and reacted very quickly. He flung Ursula out of the room and then rushed into the corridor, turning back to close the door behind him.
The rushing wave of heat blasted the door open, and the metal door violently collided with the wall a few times, causing echoes throughout the basement.
Sitting on the floor, Jesse glanced at the burning scraps still visible through the crack of the door. He then looked at the Alchemist behind him, who was frozen in shock, and asked, "Was that a bit too intense?"
Ursula swallowed and said, "Jesse, that really scared me… I didn’t expect it to turn out like this."
"Can I have the remaining potion?" Jesse asked.
"I will make a whole new bottle for you, Jesse. Thank you for helping me with the experiment. The results… exceeded my expectations!" Ursula replied.
"Do you still have any Dark Iron Dwarves’ powder?" Jesse inquired.
"Since it has proven effective, I can try to contact someone directly to buy more," Ursula said with a breath, "If I can sell this batch of medicine to a mage at a good price, Gakin might agree to help me connect with the Dark Iron Dwarves. I didn’t know if it would work out before, so asking him to do it once under uncertain circumstances would be a waste of effort if it fails."
"Okay," Jesse said. "I still need some powerful Shadow Protection Potion, Ursula. This time, I would like it to be stronger than before. The last one I had could only withstand half of a shadow spell, which I felt was not enough."
"How many do you want?"
"Six bottles," Jesse said.
Ursula replied, "The cost of making six bottles of strong Shadow Protection Potion is quite high. Dreamfoil is harder to gather than Ghost Mushroom. If you buy it in the Mage Quarter, one plant could cost about sixty to seventy silver coins, and making six bottles would require at least two plants."
"Where is the nearest place to get Dreamfoil?"
"You can find it in Duskwood," Ursula said. "Do you know that dead volcano between South Elwynn and Raven Hill?"
Jesse asked, "Are you saying that the tall hill between Raven Hill and Darkshire is a dead volcano?"
"That’s the legend," Ursula said. "Many people believe that the forest inside the volcano looks like a dreamland, where even the spreading darkness cannot completely cover it."
"Dreamfoil grows there, but it’s also an extremely dangerous place. In my opinion, places known as dreamlands often involve hallucinogenic elements that are hard to notice. There might be poisonous plants there that can cause illusions."
Very scary poison… Could there be a Green Dragon lurking inside?
"Do you still have any… Dreamfoil?" Jesse whispered, "I don’t need six bottles, just two or three, can you do that for me?"
"I don’t think I have that kind of thing," Ursula said, "Even if I did, I would have sold it to support my other potions. Honestly, this Shadow Protection Potion is only for rich mages with too much money to spend. I still have four or five bottles of regular Shadow Protection Potion left. Zardeth gave me a lot of materials to make a batch for his experiments the other day, and I can give you the rest."
"Okay then, thank you."
Jesse felt that with his current strength, it was too early for him to go to that place.
"Are you planning to go to Stranglethorn?" Ursula asked.
Jesse replied, "I’m not sure if I have time to go that far. Maybe I’ll visit Darkshire again to see if anyone is selling Fadeleaf. Last time I was there, I noticed many people selling goods from Stranglethorn like fur and herbs."
"That’s a shame, I wanted you to bring me something from Stranglethorn," Ursula sighed, leaning against the wall.
"Bring what?"
"Mojo." When Jesse heard this strange word, his mind suddenly rang.
"Are you asking me to fight with a troll?"
He almost shouted, his throat still stinging from the hot sauce he had just drank, making him cough a few times uncontrollably.
Ursula looked at him with a smile and said, "You actually know what Mojo is! Mojo doesn’t necessarily have to be taken from a troll. You know, between Duskwood and Stranglethorn, there are the ruins of the Gurubashi, where many trolls hide their things, and among them, there may be Mojo. If you help me, Jesse, there will definitely be benefits for you. Just imagine how powerful this bottle of explosive elixir is! Think about if that flame had exploded on an Orc just now."
While listening, Jesse shook his head and said, "Regardless, let’s put aside the matter of the troll for now."
