Chapter 272: The Only Companion
"Master Thomas Wolfe, I am an apprentice from Stormwind seeking herbs. I heard you are the best Alchemist and Herbalist in Darkshire. I’ve come to seek your guidance in herbalism."
After a while, the door slowly opened a crack.
A man around fifty or sixty years old peeked through the crack at Jesse and the elf behind him, saying, "You say you’re a mage from Stormwind. Let me see your ring."
Jesse showed his ring, and the man asked, "What about this elf? What is her role?"
"She’s a bodyguard," Jesse replied. "I’ve heard this forest has become dangerous, so I need some help."
Vereesa gave Jesse a sidelong glance upon hearing this.
"I am indeed Thomas Wolfe," Wolfe said. "What medicine do you want to make?"
"Shadow Protection Potion," Jesse said. "Because we need it to fight Gnolls, sir. Many Gnoll Warlocks are using Shadow Magic now, so we need a lot of Shadow Protection Potion to help in the battles."
"What herbs are needed for the Shadow Protection Potion?" Wolfe asked. "Are there places in Duskwood where these herbs grow?"
"Grave Moss, Kingsblood, and Silverleaf are all found in Duskwood, but we searched for a long time… and still couldn’t find any Grave Moss," Jesse said. "So we hope to seek your advice, sir, along with the process of making the potion."
Wolfe looked back into the room and said, "Let me search for my notes for you, young man."
Finally, he glanced at Jesse and said, "Come in, but please don’t touch anything."
Jesse nodded and entered the room, taking a quick look around and feeling that it was just an ordinary scholar’s dwelling.
"Please, have a seat!"
Wolfe kept searching through his bookcase and finally pulled out a map. Putting on his glasses, he glanced at the map and said, "It’s indeed difficult to find Grave Moss. It’s no longer safe to go to Raven Hill now, it has become very dangerous. However, I know a few places where you can find Grave Moss without having to deal with the undead."
"I don’t plan to go out and look for herbs anymore. But I don’t want to forget the secret herb spots I have found. It would be a shame if they were forgotten."
"Let me tell you, if you go south on the main road from Grand Town towards Raven Hill, you’ll reach the hills once occupied by trolls. There are many ruins of the Gurubashi Empire buried with ancient jungle trolls. The land seems enchanted by the trolls, as Grave Moss always grows there. However, the bodies of the trolls are not affected by dark magic…"
"Are there still places like that?" Jesse asked. "Won’t the trolls come back? Are there any traps?"
Wolfe explained, "After the Gurubashi War, the trolls abandoned that place. As for traps, most of them are no longer active. So, it has become a safe place to gather Grave Moss. And there’s no competition there, as not many dare to venture deep inside."
The old man became more and more excited, and Jesse was completely absorbed in listening.
If this experienced Herbalist and Alchemist was telling the truth, could there be a chance to dig for it wildly?
"Just be careful where you step there; it’s full of mounds, cliffs, and steps left behind by trolls that are not easy for humans to walk on. Eliza once went with me and broke her ankle. It took her two months to recover, even with herbal medicine…"
As he spoke, he hesitated, and the excitement on his face suddenly disappeared.
He put the map away, looked at Jesse, cleared his throat and said, "Sir, you better leave now. I have told you how to find Grave Moss."
Jesse sat down for a few minutes when suddenly Wolfe hurried to ask him, catching him off guard.
He didn’t leave right away, instead he said, "Does Mr. Wolfe know what’s happening in Raven Hill? It seems like you know a lot about the Great Mausoleum, will the quality of Grave Moss from the place you mentioned be different? Shouldn’t herbs found in more dangerous places be of better quality?"
Wolfe’s face didn’t look good.
"You should really leave, young man. My knowledge of the Great Mausoleum is only hearsay…"
"Tom… Are you calling me?"
Suddenly, a weak voice calling for help came from the nearby door.
"Eliza, go back, everything’s fine." Thomas Wolfe got up unsteadily and walked to the door, saying to the person inside, "I was just mentioning you to the guest, your illness hasn’t healed yet… You should rest properly."
"Tom… Are you calling me?"
"Thank you for caring about me, but you really should go back."
Vereesa glanced at Jesse and mouthed the word "undead".
Jesse nodded.
His wife had already passed away, maybe that was why he moved out of Darkshire.
"Tom… are you calling me?"
Wolfe fell silent for a moment, then stepped through the doorway towards them. Suddenly, he pulled out a dining knife from his waist!
Jesse reached out and grabbed Wolfe’s wrist, pushing him against the wall. Vereesa, standing behind him, had already gripped the long knife at her waist.
"I’m sorry! You must die!"
Wolfe yelled frantically, struggling hard, but he was too weak and old to resist much. Under the control of Jesse, a young man infected by the blood of a black dragon, Wolfe had almost no strength to fight back. The dining knife was easily taken away and thrown onto the table.
Vereesa stepped through the door, and Jesse watched her disappearing figure, feeling a chill running through his brain.
"Don’t hurt her just yet!"
Suddenly, a crazy scream came from behind the door. Vereesa frowned and stepped back as a pale woman lunged out. With quick reflexes, the elf picked up a knife from the table and threw it, piercing the woman’s arm bone into the wall. The zombie couldn’t pull it out.
Jesse was astonished by Vereesa’s accuracy and strength in that throw, and also by the appearance of the zombie.
Eliza appeared to be dead, but her skin was smooth and pale, looking like a woman in her thirties rather than someone in their fifties or sixties like Wolfe.
Judging from her facial features, she was quite a beautiful woman.
"Liz!" Wolfe almost shouted madly, "I’ll kill you all! I’ll turn you into immortal servants to take care of my wife forever!"
Vereesa glanced at Jesse and asked, "What are you going to do?"
Instead of answering immediately, Jesse grabbed Wolfe’s neck and said, "Do you want your wife to die again, sir? I can make this elf smash her pretty face right now!"
Wolfe roared, "Go to where the dead belong, you trickster! May the shadow curse you!"
"Vereesa, I’ll count to three. Hit that mean person’s head as soon as I say ‘three’!" Jesse shouted. "Three!"
"I’ll kill you all! I’ll kill you all!"
"Two, one!"
"No! No! No!" Wolfe immediately burst into tears and said, "Please… don’t… tell me what you want… I’ll give you anything, just don’t hurt her… I have nothing else except her!"
