Chapter 271: The Recluse
Grand Town, also known as Darkshire, was much livelier in the future. At this moment, it had not yet been taken over by the night watch, with Stormwind soldiers and security forces visible everywhere. Even now, light cavalry were seen heading north for patrols.
After all, this was another important stronghold against the chaos of the Redridge Gnolls, supporting each other with Lakeshire to the north.
Darkshire was also the last major supply station before entering the southern Stranglethorn Vale. Therefore, there were many hunters, adventurers staying here, and some selling items brought out of Stranglethorn Vale. Especially, there were goblins coming and going here.
On the menu board here, Jesse saw the phrase "Darkshire’s people have adapted well to the new life" and wondered what it meant.
Worg meat, mutated spider meat, these guys even dare to cook beasts corrupted by shadows, is high-temperature sterilization, right?
Jesse glanced at the kitchen and felt that the place might be more decadent than The Slaughtered Lamb basement, at least Jarel still didn’t dare to roast lamb that had not been experimented on by warlocks. But thinking about the fel magic wild boar meat in Hellfire Peninsula in the game, it was quite something.
Forget it, there are always people who will try new food recipes at all costs, as a warlock himself, he had no grounds to complain.
Of course, this didn’t mean he had to accept those strange foods. After simply eating some common foods in Stormwind with Vereesa, while the town hall was not closed yet, the two immediately set off.
The town hall of Darkshire was quite grand, at least much more than Lakeshire, at this moment, there were even two elves inside talking to the clerks.
When they entered, Vereesa deliberately covered her hood to avoid the elves’ attention, but in Darkshire, elves were not considered particularly rare creatures, so when a ranger passed by, the elves just glanced and did not pay much attention.
Mayor Elro Ellerloke was a member of the Ellerloke family that ruled this land, and this family had considerable influence in Stormwind as well.
"Thomas Wolfe!"
The clerk repeated the name and went into the room to look through the register. Jesse and Vereesa waited outside for a long time with no results.
As evening fell, Vereesa kept her head down, chewing on nuts she bought from the inn, staring intently at the town hall entrance.
Jesse grew impatient listening to her chewing sound. Just then, the clerk came out.
She shook her head and said, "Mr. Thomas Wolfe seems to have moved out of Darkshire, sir."
"Where did he go?" Jesse asked.
"I really don’t know. Maybe Raven Hill."
"We just came from Raven Hill!" Vereesa said unhappily. "People there said Mr. Wolfe had already settled in Darkshire. Can you please double-check?"
"Miss? Is it Lady Alleria?"
A rough male voice came from behind. Jesse and Vereesa turned around to see a man in his thirties standing there.
The man glanced at Vereesa’s forehead and said, "Oops, sorry, I think I got the wrong person!"
"It’s okay." Vereesa glanced towards Jesse and said.
"What can I do for you, miss elf?" the man asked the clerk.
"These two are looking for an address for a Mr. Thomas Wolfe, sir, but there is only his name on this, no place to live…"
Is he the mayor?
"Thomas Wolfe, the Alchemist." the man said. "I know him. He moved outside the town a few months ago. His old house was bought by another merchant, so we removed his address. Just follow the main road outside to the south of town, pass the first farm along the way, continue walking a few hundred meters, and you’ll see his house. There’s a small road that leads straight there."
"Thank you very much." Vereesa nodded, pulling Jesse to leave. Jesse asked again, "Sir, why did Mr. Thomas Wolfe move out?"
"Not quite sure, young man," the mayor said. "You might have to ask him in person."
After that, he looked at Vereesa and said, "Miss, do you know a lady named Alleria Windrunner? I had the pleasure of meeting her here at the end of last year. Your voice sounds very similar to hers, and your appearance as well."
"You’re not the first to say so, sir. Thank you for your help. Goodbye," Vereesa smiled, then pulled Jesse out of the town hall onto the street.
"If you delay any longer, I’ll be found out! Can’t you see there are other elves inside?"
"This Mr. Wolfe is no simple person," Jesse said. "He’s connected to Necromancy. Wouldn’t you like to know more?"
Vereesa blinked at Jesse and said, "Alright, maybe I’m a bit too nervous."
"Don’t act recklessly later," Jesse warned. "The situation in that guy’s house may be unusual. Let’s not make things get out of hand."
"We can’t be in danger. Even if he’s just a doctor or a Necromancer," Vereesa said confidently.
Jesse stared at her and said, "I know you won’t be in danger. The issue now is I don’t want him to be in danger. We have questions to ask."
"Of course I know," Vereesa replied.
"Let’s make a plan," Jesse suggested. "We shouldn’t bring up anything related to Necromancy at first. What if he is involved? We need to gain some trust first and let him see that we mean no harm."
"He’s an Alchemist, right?" Vereesa said. "So why don’t we just say we’re gathering herbs?"
"Have you ever gathered herbs?" Jesse asked.
"No."
"Then let me talk to him," Jesse said. "I’ve done this before."
"I’ll follow your lead, Jesse," Vereesa said. "Shall we go?"
Jesse nodded and felt like Vereesa was pushing him to keep moving forward without stopping for a moment.
She had thousands of years ahead of her, yet was less patient than a human.
But they really needed to make good use of their time on this trip, as the Ogre problem had already delayed them for most of the day.
Following the direction pointed out by Mayor Eburock, they arrived at the outskirts of the town, passed by a farm, and stopped at the first crossroads.
A long stone path covered in weeds led to a small house hidden by trees. Faint lights inside suggested someone lived there.
Jesse walked up to the door and gently knocked. A voice from inside asked suspiciously, "Who is it?"
