Chapter 264: Reading People Accurately
After finishing morning classes, Jesse planned to go out to buy some ink and pens, and have lunch at The Gilded Rose at noon.
As soon as he entered, Jesse felt that something was off about the atmosphere in the tavern. The people at a table beside the counter kept glancing towards a seat in the farthest corner.
He casually glanced over and spotted Vereesa sitting there. Vereesa clearly noticed him too and waved in his direction.
"Can I sit here, Miss Asselwin?" Jesse walked over and asked.
"Of course," Vereesa said. "Jesse, long time no see."
"Yeah, when did you come back?" Jesse asked as he sat down.
Vereesa replied weakly, "The day before yesterday."
"Is everything going smoothly?"
"I can’t say if it’s going well or not." She tugged at her silver hair and said, "I did find something though, I think it’s related to the Death Knight."
Jesse said, "How can that be considered not going well? I have something to give you too. I found some parchment in the territory of Riverpaw Gnoll that might be related to the Death Knight carrying necromantic knowledge. It looked suspicious, but you hadn’t returned."
The elf sighed in relief and said, "I thought coming back would be a waste of time."
"So why did you come back?" Jesse asked. Vereesa moved her lips slightly and said, "I felt like everything was at a dead end. Aimlessly searching in the forest was getting me nowhere, so I came back, and I ran out of money too."
Jesse was not surprised at all for some reason.
"Did you not bring any money with you?"
"I brought some," Vereesa said, "but obviously not enough. I’m not very familiar with the environment here… it’s quite troublesome in the wilderness. Now I feel like I’m not a competent Farstrider."
"Aren’t you still a student who hasn’t graduated?" Jesse said, "I heard from Kaffir that you were the top performer among that group of students."
"Am I the best, right?" Vereesa asked, "What I mean is…"
She glanced at the person next to her and whispered, "You know…"
"I know," Jesse looked at Vereesa and said, "Are you hungry? What would you like to eat?"
"Anything is fine?" Vereesa asked.
"Try not to choose something too expensive…" Jesse whispered.
Vereesa nodded and said, "I’ll have what you ordered last time, okay? Except for the drink. By the way, do they have fish here to eat?"
"Stormwind has a port," Jesse called the sommelier and said, "One almond chocolate cake, one salty cracker, one piece of sweet cheese, and a poached salmon. What would you like to drink?"
"I’ll pass!"
"Then I’ll have a glass of morning dew wine."
After the sommelier left, Jesse whispered, "I not only got some magical materials at Gnoll’s place, but also a weapon that I suspect belonged to the Death Knight. Most importantly, there was a body, do you remember the shell left by Teron Gorefiend? It’s almost identical to that thing."
Hearing this, Vereesa leaned forward, and Jesse could almost hear a faint hum of Arcane magic coming from her eyes.
"You found these things at Gnoll’s place? Where is that place?"
"Do you know Westbrook Garrison?"
"Ah, I know, that’s the place of the Riverpaw Gnoll leader. I planned to go there to try my luck when I was short of money, only to find out that several wanted criminals who hadn’t been killed for months died in these days. Oh dear, it’s like everything is against me."
"Um," Jesse said, "It was us!"
Vereesa was surprised, looking at the sommelier placing a glass in front of Jesse, couldn’t help but laugh and say, "I’m not sure if it’s lucky or unlucky. Can we still find the Death Knight’s body? Can you take me there? I can leave now."
"We burned it," Jesse confessed, "That body seemed to be able to resurrect the dead and turn them into undead. Gnoll also noticed this, so to prevent the spread of the undead, we burned the place down. But most of the things that could be taken out are with me, which are the things I wanted you to see."
Vereesa anxiously asked, "When can you show me?"
Jesse originally thought he could make some money, but the High Elves in front of him were clearly poorer than himself.
He cleared his throat and Vereesa squinted as if she had sensed something.
"I guess you want some reward, right?" she said. "Don’t worry, when I return to Quel’Thalas, if it really has something to do with death magic, I think the Reliquary will accept it. I will find a way to have someone bring you the money, okay?"
Jesse nodded and said, "I’ll appreciate it, but I don’t intend to sell that sword for money. I will certainly show it to you. What did you find?"
"Some fabric," Vereesa said. "I think it’s clothing worn by a Death Knight, torn over time, leaving behind these fabrics. There’s a strong Orc Death Knight smell on them."
"Where did you find it?"
"Great Mausoleum, in Raven Hill’s Great Mausoleum."
"Did you go alone?"
"Yes."
"There are many scary creatures called ghouls there." Vereesa picked up a snack and stuffed it into her mouth, chewing as she said, "Yes, but they are not very strong, Jesse. If you go, you can easily handle them."
Jesse listened to Vereesa’s words and remembered the day when he and Greed were chased by ghouls, nodding stiffly.
The waiter brought over steaming cooked salmon. Jesse looked at the sliced fish and said after thinking for a while, "So, the body was brought by Gnolls from the Great Mausoleum to the southern shore of Lake Nathyran, right?"
"Are you sure it’s the body of the same Death Knight?"
Vereesa used a spoon to eat a piece of fish, blowing on it because it was hot, and asked, "What if there are many Death Knights within the Kingdom of Stormwind?"
"Then I don’t plan to stay here any longer, I’ll move to Boralus Harbor." Jesse sighed and said, "But your suspicions make sense. Let’s take out our things and check for any magic traces. Can you sense any magic on these items?"
"Like the mages from Reliquary?" Vereesa confidently replied, "Maybe we don’t need complicated magic to determine if they belong to the same person."
Suddenly, Jesse wondered if Vereesa would smell the weapon that the succubus carried all around Redridge.
However, using a purification potion might wash away the Death Knight’s scent. But since it’s a demonic weapon, having a demon’s scent shouldn’t be surprising, right?
