Chapter 260: Relic
As the father and son returned to the small village on the mountain, Jesse gave them eight silver coins and some bandages as compensation.
Since these two people were not from a wealthy family, and Old Medeiros thought Jesse’s arm was pierced by the dagger, but Jesse knew it wasn’t that serious because the Soul Link here could help absorb more than 20% of the damage.
After resting for a while and eating some jerky at the mountaineer’s house, Jesse continued his journey north. He still had a task to complete – to find dwarf gunpowder north of Redridge.
Even though it was late in the night, Jesse didn’t feel tired at all.
It didn’t seem strange to him that after using Life Drain, he felt so energetic and excited, as if he had endless strength.
When he agreed to find the Dark Iron Dwarves’ gunpowder for Ursula, he didn’t think there was anything wrong. But now that he was here, he started to doubt if it would be easy.
Redridge was too far from Blackrock Mountain. Would the Dark Iron Dwarves really come here to settle down?
Since the time of the Three Hammers War, when Blackrock Mountain was part of Redridge and a human territory, the Dark Iron Dwarves have been cautious not to provoke the Kingdom of Stormwind too much to avoid making enemies on both sides. Would Jesse keep going north to help Ursula get the gunpowder and enter the battlefield between the Dark Iron Dwarves and Blackrock Orcs?
Thinking about this, Jesse felt a little more optimistic about his journey.
He decided to stick to the Redridge area and avoid crossing the Deadwood forest into the Burning Steppes. If he encountered any trouble, he would deal with it; if not, he would return and tell Ursula he couldn’t help.
He was prepared to compensate her with some money if needed.
So Jesse walked nervously along the ridge to the east, feeling relaxed after the battle turned into a leisurely walk.
He thought he had to go back for nothing, but then, before the sun was fully up, when only a bit of deep blue was visible in the sky, he saw in the distance near a cliff a spot where some man-made objects seemed to be placed.
Running over there, he found it was indeed an abandoned camp, with dust covering the items left behind – boxes, packages, and even a rack holding something he couldn’t identify.
If Jesse had to guess what that rack was for, he might say a telescope, but it could also be a metal grill for cooking by dwarves.
After searching through with two demons, all they found besides some moldy and rotten food were things unrelated to gunpowder.
However, this seemed to be a camp of dwarves. Jesse found an old vest that was wide and short, not like human clothing. But the vest, yellowed white, would Dark Iron Dwarves like to wear such a color?
Maybe they would, but Jesse felt this place was more like where Bronzebeard Dwarves might be.
Many of these items had merged with the surrounding land, either severely decaying or so worn out that they couldn’t be identified. It seemed like a camp abandoned many years ago.
Jesse sat on a box that had been torn open by something, feeling like he had underestimated how troublesome this task would be.
Not to mention, he didn’t know how to tell if this was the camp of the Dark Iron Dwarves. What if it was actually left by the Bronzebeard Dwarf explorers, like if they found a mine here and were preparing to go inside to see what’s there, resting here for a while… then even if they left gunpowder, it’s not the kind that Ursula wants.
Right, is this the camp of the explorer team?
Are there any mines, village ruins, or similar places nearby?
As the sky gradually lightened, Jesse looked towards Lake Everstill, realizing he couldn’t see the surface of the lake from here anymore, and he couldn’t even see the pointed towers of Stonewatch Keep in the distance.
They had reached a very eastern area, where Stonewatch Keep was nowhere to be seen. Jesse stuffed a piece of dry bread into his mouth and glanced downhill to the north.
The trees here had become sparse, with scattered rocks and bare gray ridges everywhere, almost like a valley that had just experienced a mudslide.
Jesse descended the mountain with his magic wand, searching back and forth in this rocky slope until it was daylight. Finally, he spotted a crevice that seemed to lead somewhere.
This crevice was very hidden, with no footprints or paths visible outside, unlike a mine still in use or a cave inhabited by something else.
He wondered if the dwarf camp on the mountain was connected to this cave.
Jesse peeked inside but couldn’t see anything, only the moonlight shone at the entrance.
He cast a Light Spell, but the succubus grabbed his wrist and said, "Master, let me go ahead. I might see better inside than you do."
"Then be careful."
"No problem."
"Did you see, Saenor, how Molofeel bravely took on responsibility with his abilities?"
"You two are so big, and I am so small. Isn’t it your duty to protect me?"
"So you just assumed…"
"Quiet!" The succubus took two steps forward, then turned back to look at Jesse with widened eyes and said, "Of course I didn’t mean you, dear…"
Unlike the previous lava cave, this cave was cold. Different from what Jesse imagined, it wasn’t naturally formed. After passing through some earth tunnels with signs of digging, he stepped onto a hard floor.
With a bit of magical light shining from the succubus’s eyes, he could tell that this place used to be a home for dwarves in the past, with the walls resembling those stone buildings in Aerie Peak.
There was complete silence inside, as if everything was perfectly still. Jesse could hear a faint ringing in his ears due to his alertness.
The succubus asked softly, "Do you want to keep going?"
There was a faint earthy smell and a subtle musty odor in the air. Jesse wasn’t sure what these smells meant – there were no people living here, but there might be animals hiding.
Based on his knowledge, there shouldn’t be any large mammals like bears living here, and in this cold cave, there shouldn’t be Fire Lizards, or… spiders?
He touched the wall next to him and felt no leftover spiderwebs or anything similar. There was nothing like that outside the cave either.
Could it be other bugs?
Jesse couldn’t tell if this was a relic of the Dark Iron Dwarves or a residential site of another dwarf tribe.
He bent down and searched the ground back and forth for a while. With the help of the succubus’s eyes, he found several unclear large footprints in the shallow soil at a corner.
