Chapter 254: Mountaineer
The sun hadn’t set yet, but staring at the fire for so long made it feel like the sky had already turned completely dark.
Jesse looked at the faraway grey-blue lake, sitting on the side throwing stones at rocks to pass the time.
Not long after adding firewood, Molofeel finally emerged from the bushes.
She carried a wild rabbit as big as a small fox, looking sad as she approached Jesse and said, "Eat!"
"I thought you were gone for so long to bring back a cow," Jesse said.
"Are you not satisfied?" succubus asked, sitting next to Jesse.
"Not dissatisfied, just worried you ran away." Jesse glanced at the rabbit almost cut in half by a sword, with only the skin holding it together, and said, "Since you’ve made it like this, might as well skin it completely."
Molofeel placed a hand on the shoulder, looking disheveled, grabbed the skin at the waist of the rabbit, and quickly pulled down the skin from the lower half of the rabbit, tossing it aside. Then, skillfully, she pulled off the skin from the upper half, doing it so smoothly that it didn’t seem like her first time.
Jesse looked at the completely skinned rabbit, considering that succubus had no experience serving humans before, so what kind of skin did she pull off before?
Jesse caught a glimpse of the imp also staring blankly at succubus’s actions. Its size was not much different from the rabbit, so being skinned like this was just right.
Two demons and a human were busily roasting a rabbit over the fire. Even though they had roasted it for a long time and some parts were burnt, when they tried to bite into it, there were still some parts that seemed raw.
Jesse didn’t have much experience with outdoor cooking, so he ate it reluctantly. He thought next time he should bring some salt and spices because eating it plain without any flavor was unpleasant – it was both fishy and smelly, nothing close to being delicious.
However, this was a rare outdoor cooking experience for Jesse. Even though it didn’t taste good, it had a unique flavor.
The two demons were not interested in the roasted meat at all. They just kept arguing and bickering, occasionally asking Jesse to be the judge and see who was right.
Jesse wanted to sit there and listen to all the stories the two demons experienced in the Twisting Nether. He enjoyed their company and the tales they shared.
But as time passed and it got late, it was time to set off.
Using the small amount of light peeking through the mountains, Jesse saw a few lonely houses at a high place, with a few windows already lit up.
He packed the imp into his bag and had the succubus hide to ensure they wouldn’t be discovered by any mountaineers on their way home.
This little settlement didn’t exist in the game, just like the entire Redridge mountain peak, which lacked much content in the game. As Jesse approached the small cabin on the mountain, he heard the rhythmic sound of chopping wood from a distance.
Behind a simple fence, a strong man was picking firewood, probably getting ready to make a fire for cooking.
"Is it Mr. Medeiros?" he asked from afar.
"No." The man straightened his chest, wiped the sweat off his forehead, and pointed towards a higher hill behind, saying, "Humbury went up the mountain the day before yesterday, and his son went with him. They haven’t returned yet. They might have gone back to Lakeshire. You can go check Lakeshire."
Upon hearing this, Jesse felt a bit itchy on his scalp and couldn’t help but scratch it.
Looking in the direction the mountaineer pointed, a dark mountain looked like a giant fallen beast, and the faint mountain path seemed to lead people straight into its abyssal maw.
"Did they mention where they were going when they left?"
"Who are you?" The man walked a few steps toward them with an axe in hand and asked, "Why are you looking for him?"
Jesse raised his hand with a ring on it and said, "I am a mage from the Wizard’s Sanctum. I heard he found a dragon scale and wanted a mage from the Wizard’s Sanctum to help examine it. That’s why I came here. I mean no harm."
"Mage?" The man continued walking closer, holding a piece of straw in his mouth. He squinted at Jesse’s ring and said, "Indeed it looks like a mage’s ring. Well, he did pick up a large scale, bigger than the one on a Murloc’s forehead, and it was reddish-brown, sharp like a blade. He said it was a dragon scale. Is it the Red Dragon those northerners talk about? Could it fetch a good price?"
"I’m not sure about the exact price, sir," Jesse said. "But it should be very valuable."
The man glanced back at the mountain behind him and said, "I told you, otherwise he wouldn’t be so obsessed…"
"Mage, you know a lot, do you think it’s possible? More scales? Are there really dragons in this world? Or is it something left by the Fire Lizards of Blackrock Mountain? I’ve heard that Fire Lizard scales are quite valuable, but I’ve never seen a fire lizard on the mountain before."
"Dragons undoubtedly exist, but maybe different from what most people think," Jesse asked again, "What about his wife? Does he have other family members?"
"Are you talking about Old Medeiros’s wife?" The man scratched his head and said, "His wife died several years ago, it was an Orc matter. So, young mage, after telling you so much, is it worth five copper coins?"
This guy had a full beard, and only when you got close could you see from his skin that he might be around thirty years old. From a distance, he looked like a man in his fifties at a glance.
"How big is that scale?" Jesse asked again.
The man gestured with his hand to show a triangle and said, "It’s about this size."
Jesse glanced at the man’s hand, and the size of the scale he gestured, even on the young dragon at Southshore, there wouldn’t be many scales that big.
But considering that he may exaggerate what he sees, even a small-scale event is not insignificant.
Were there any other creatures in all of Redridge with scales like these? Could it be a Fire Lizard? Unless it’s a giant scale from an Incendosaur.
But Incendosaurs rarely cause trouble on the surface, unless it’s a special individual too big for a cave. Jesse thought it might be a scale shed suddenly by a passing dragon.
"Have you seen anything huge fly by?" Jesse asked. "Or heard about it."
The man reached out, and Jesse handed him five copper coins. The man said, "No."
"Thank you for the information, sir."
It seemed like they had to continue up the mountain.
"Do you want to go up and find them, young mage?" the man said from behind. "I suggest you go in the morning, and I can bring a few friends with you. It’s dangerous to go alone at night. Especially when you cross over to the north side of Redridge, you may encounter more than just nocturnal animals. Medeiros is an experienced mountaineer, but you are not."
Jesse could not rest here. If the Medeiros father and son were trapped up in the mountains the day before, there might be danger now.
Of course, he was not alone.
"Thank you for your advice, sir, I will pay attention."
