Chapter 249: New Mission, New Equipment
In Protection School, they don’t really teach spells in class. You usually have to learn spells from your own teacher. Jesse thought this was because everyone had different levels of ability, and teaching everyone together would be too confusing.
Jesse was relieved that he didn’t embarrass himself in front of everyone.
The teachers in class mostly talked about magical history and some spellcasting knowledge and skills. But for Jesse, who was still at a basic level in the classes he took, he had already heard most of the things from Malin.
When it came to the issue of spellcasting strength that Jesse cared most about, it was only briefly mentioned. Jesse guessed it was to give a simple introduction to the new young apprentices who had just arrived here. After all, he and a few others of his age were the oldest in the class.
By now, Jesse had very little confidence in his ability to control spellcasting strength. The teacher mentioned in class that the sensitivity to the intensity of spells requires a high level of sensitivity to Arcane.
The sensitivity to Arcane… Jesse was still at a stage where he didn’t even expect to successfully cast spells by the book. How sensitive should he be…
After memorizing the Mage Armor spell for months, thinking he had mastered it well, he was still told by the teacher that his spellcasting wasn’t quite right. Sigh.
Would it be even harder for him to advance to an apprentice mage and a full-fledged mage than Amy? Amy was already considered talented compared to him… Surely he wouldn’t have to wait until his thirties or forties, right, dear Heavens.
Drinking half a bottle of Sunwell water didn’t work?
Considering that Sunwell water helped heal my undead wound, the stab wound on my shoulder, and raised my mana slightly, I really can’t expect more from it.
A few days ago, I arranged to meet Malin today for a letter. Jesse picked up the bag from Ursula after class and hurried to Malin’s study. By this time, he should have finished teaching his apprentices in the afternoon.
Upon entering, Malin was sitting inside writing something. He glanced at Jesse and felt there was something off in his eyes.
"Master, how is your recovery going?"
Malin coldly said, "What do you think? Do I have to lie on the ground and shout a few times for you to believe I’m sick? I’m not like those lazy fools who skip class to stay at home. I have so many students to teach, things to do, and the injury caused by that useless person earlier is far more serious than your poisoned Scorch Curse."
Hearing Malin curse, Jesse secretly breathed a sigh of relief, glad that it had nothing to do with him.
"Well, enough chit-chat, I have things to do. The person you’re looking for is Humbury Medeiros, his name is here. He’s a mountaineer in Lakeshire. But he doesn’t usually live in Redridge, he stays in a hunting cabin up in the mountains. I can’t quite remember the exact location, but there’s a stone path that leads there. You can ask around Lakeshire, Mr. Medeiros has family living there."
"Is this Medeiros the one who found the black dragon scales?" Jesse asked.
"At least he informed us." Malin put down his glasses and said, "It’s also your job to figure this out, Mr. Seso. I only learned about this information recently. If you can’t find any clues, you can take a little more time. If you don’t come back, I’ll help you ask for leave."
"Ah… Master." Jesse said, "If I keep missing classes, will I never become a formal mage?"
"You, as an apprentice mage, haven’t seen any hope yet, and you’re already thinking about becoming a formal mage?" Malin asked.
"No need to be so straightforward…" Jesse said helplessly.
Malin glanced at his pocket watch and said, "By the way, the Larson family is about to close. Why don’t you go pick out a new robe?"
"Can I choose my own?"
"One gold coin." Malin pointed to the table and said, "This is the highest budget I could secure for you. Master Andromath specially thanked you for your contribution to the Wizard’s Sanctum’s task for the king."
"That’s too much!" Jesse took Malin’s notes and said, "I’ll go then, Master."
Striding quickly from the study to Larson family, this time even the shopkeeper recognized him.
"You’re back, Mr. Seso… Did your last robe only last a few days before it got damaged?" Shopkeeper Larson said as he tidied up the fabrics on the counter.
"It didn’t get damaged," Jesse said. "But it needs some repair, so I need to get a replacement."
"You can also get it repaired here," Larson said. "Wasn’t your robe bought here too? If it’s just a minor damage, we can fix it quickly."
"I’ll bring it in a couple of days, sir," Jesse nodded.
Actually, that robe was in a terrible mess last night with fire, shadow, blood, and Molofeel’s demon liquid. It took a long time to clean it up and make it look normal again.
But he needed to wait for it to dry before checking it properly. If there were still issues, he would have to wash it again.
Luckily, as Larson mentioned, the fabric was not easily flammable, so it wasn’t burnt badly. It seemed like there was a chance to repair it. Otherwise, Jesse was considering disposing of it.
"The budget this time is quite sufficient," Larson said. "Master Andromath informed me of a gold coin, which should be enough to buy many decent quality robes. Any specific requests this time, Mr. Seso?"
"A short robe, fire-resistant, that’s the most important. I plan to learn fire magic, so I hope to reduce the frequency of being sent to the cathedral for healing."
"Don’t want a long robe this time?"
Jesse shook his head and said, "It doesn’t really suit me, sir. It’s fine in the city, but uncomfortable when traveling. Do you have any good quality short robes? I can stretch my budget a bit with a few extra silver coins if necessary. Quality is important… It would be even better if it can resist shadow corruption."
Then he remembered the enchanted robe at the other clothing store for 7 gold coins. Even when hit by the Red Dragon’s fire, it wasn’t completely damaged, just a bit torn at the hem. He didn’t realize its value back then, but now he thought it was really powerful. You get what you pay for.
However, after struggling for months, Jesse would have to spend all his savings to afford it.
But even if he could afford this ultimate treasure that could stabilize houses, he didn’t want to consider it.
Before long, Larson came out holding a box. Based on Jesse’s experience, items well-kept in a box usually meant they were good quality.
Upon opening it, there was a neatly folded crimson robe inside.
Larson lifted the robe and said, "This fine silk robe was crafted by elves during the Second War, Mr. Jesse Seso. Originally meant for Stromgarde mages to combat Orc Warlocks and demons. However, due to the defeat of the tribe and the quick end of battles north of Alterac, many of these robes were left unused. Stromgarde later donated a batch to our kingdom to aid in the rebuilding efforts, and this is one of them."
A crimson robe might look strange on an ordinary man, but in the Mage Quarter, where most people wore blue or purple robes, it wouldn’t stand out as much.
"Will clothes made by elves be very expensive?" Jesse asked.
Larson glanced at the sleeves and said, "These clothes are tailored to fit the size and habits of humans and are solely provided for battlefield mages, so the cost is not as high as you may think, sir. However, being products made by Quel’Thalas, they are indeed more expensive compared to usual mage robes. If someone were to buy them, it’d cost at least 1 gold coin and 20 silver. Considering these are specifically for the students of the Mage Quarter, and our collaboration with the Wizard’s Sanctum, I’m offering it to you directly for 1 gold coin."
Jesse tried on the clothes and felt that even as mass-produced items by elves, they appeared somewhat intricate, especially compared to his previous outfits.
"Are there many people wearing the same mage robes at the Wizard’s Sanctum?"
"There were more last year, a bit fewer this year, but no one finds it strange, Mr. Seso. These mage robes are truly crafted with great precision and are enchantable. Elven items are very accommodating for various enchantments."
"Then I’ll take this one," Jesse said. "I’d also like a pair of darker pants, thicker ones that can endure a journey across Stranglethorn Vale without needing repairs from you."
"What you need is not just pants but a pair of high-level enchanted mithril leggings for extra protection."
"Then let’s journey through Elwynn Forest…"
