Chapter 243: The Importance of Magic
"Jesse Seso?" Caro Duchamp waved in front of his eyes and asked, "What’s wrong? Is your soul trapped by the Death Knight in Dalaran?"
"Death Knight?!"
Jesse suddenly snapped out of it and remembered he was in the middle of a class on Orcish language.
"Um…no, I mean I zoned out, sorry."
Duchamp nodded and said, "During the first week of the new school year, many young students have this issue. Try translating this word."
Jesse looked at the Language Orcish rune by Duchamp’s hand and said, "Grom, giant."
"Very good," Duchamp said calmly, "I guess Mr. Seso didn’t slack off even during the holidays."
Jesse breathed a sigh of relief, glancing at the other students to make sure no one was looking at him oddly.
It was only after class today that he realized many people here knew he was on the street during the Death Knight attack on Dalaran, and now he was practically a celebrity in the Wizard’s Sanctum.
Making so many messes, it would be strange not to be famous, right?
However, the reason he zoned out was not because of attention, but because of Molofeel. He hadn’t felt anything strange last night, then suddenly fell asleep, as if being anesthetized during surgery. Was this some kind of sleeping charm?
Thankfully, he woke up early in the morning. Before leaving home, he checked himself several times to make sure there was no sweet smell on him before coming to the Mage Quarter.
Thinking about having to face that succubus tonight, I felt a strange and unclear feeling in my heart.
The only clear feeling I had was a reaction down below.
Remembering how Molofeel had me feeling utterly helpless last night, like a lamb waiting to be slaughtered, I had no power to resist…
"Mr. Jesse Seso!"
"Uh, teacher?"
The dragon language teacher pointed to the floating Arcane characters in the air and said, "Say this word, here’s a hint, it’s related to the element of life."
"I… I don’t know."
"Today is the first class of our introductory dragon language course, Mr. Seso. I understand that what happened in Dalaran may have had a big impact on you, but now that you’re back in Stormwind and back in class, shouldn’t you move forward?"
"It’s not about Dalaran, ma’am, I was just lost in thought, sorry."
The female mage nodded and said, "This character is called Lei Isoto, usually appearing in restoration magic or life magic. The Kirin Tor believes that we can learn from the botanists of Quel’Thalas and further apply magic to agriculture. In fact, as far as I know, before the war, some more radical measures had already been practiced in northern countries such as Lordaeron and Arathi."
During the afternoon inscription class, Jesse struggled with writing runes using magical power in the first lesson.
Because he found out that he could not summon Arcane energy at all, no matter how he recited the spells taught by the teacher or concentrated his mind, all he felt was a looming emptiness of energy depletion. When he panicked, he even felt dizzy from the failed casting of Mage Armor.
He had to give up forcing himself, or else if he fainted in class, it would attract much more attention than his current irregular performance.
After class, the inscription professor called him outside the classroom and said, "Mr. Jesse Seso, have you ever considered that you might not be suitable for the inscription class? In fact, mages don’t have to participate in activities that frequently use Arcane powers. Recording spells and maintaining artifacts are equally important tasks."
"Today is definitely not normal, Master," Jesse said. "I will definitely improve a lot next week, I am really sorry."
The professor nodded and said, "If you are confident, then I look forward to your future performances."
Watching the professor leave, Jesse understood what was probably going on.
That darn succubus must have drained his mana last night, and he still hasn’t recovered much by now, probably sucked dry.
After class, Jesse went to buy two bottles of Mana Potion directly from the alchemist warlock, because he planned to recreate the Shadowflame he conjured up at Malin’s place outside the city tonight, and he couldn’t let the succubus delay his plans.
Wait, how about using her as a target?
If she’s a demon from the Twisting Nether, she might have high fire resistance, right?
Returning home in the evening, Jesse saw the succubus sitting at the table writing something, her tail swaying back and forth.
Just seeing the outline of her back, Jesse felt a strange sensation again.
How unreliable…
But what is she writing? Is she helping the imp copy books?
Wait, where’s the imp?
Jesse hasn’t introduced the imp to the succubus yet, so how are they helping each other already?
"What are you doing?"
The succubus turned around with a mischievous smile and said, "The unforgettable experience of our first meeting last night must be recorded properly."
"Do you have a habit of writing a diary? What kind of demon is this…"
Jesse approached and glimpsed at what she was writing. Surprisingly, it was in a common language. However, he only glanced at the content, and it shocked him so much that his head buzzed.
"When did I drink your urine?! Do demons even have urine?!" He crumpled the paper into a ball, hesitated to throw it out of the window, and stuffed it into his pocket, saying, "These papers are still useful. I worked hard to earn money to buy them. Are you using them to write explicit and spicy stories?!"
Molofeel innocently looked at Jesse and said, "Why are you so angry? Can’t we have some fun?"
"Why am I so angry? Did you drain all my energy last night?" Jesse asked, "I couldn’t even cast a spell in magic class!"
"My survival depends on magic," the succubus explained seriously, "Without magic, I will soon die in this plane and continue to wander endlessly in the Twisting Nether… Do you want to see me die?"
Jesse was momentarily unsure if it was real or not.
He looked at the succubus for a while and said, "Never mind, let me ask you, how long can you stay invisible?"
"It depends on how much magic power I have, or should I say, it depends on…how much magic power you have." The succubus stared at Jesse’s lower body, sitting on the table, tapping the table legs with her hooves.
Jesse swallowed and asked, "If you go out with me tonight, can you stay invisible all the way outside the city and then come back invisibly?"
"You want me to go out with you?!" Molofeel jumped down and said, "Then I… I can become invisible until you wish I’m dead…"
"Can you be honest?" Jesse asked.
"Really, Phase Shift is no burden to me, master." Molofeel narrowed his eyes and said, "Have you summoned some useless thing… that I can’t even perform Phase Shift easily?"
"Ahem," Jesse said, "then go invisible and show me how good you are."
The succubus disappeared instantly from Jesse’s sight, not even leaving a trace of Arcane glimmer. If someone who had never learned magic before saw this, they might not catch anything at all.
Jesse looked around but couldn’t find any trace of the succubus. How could he be sure where she was?
By the way, can imp see her?
"Saenor, come out and take a look."
"Is the master calling me?" imp poked his head out, "Hey? Where did that demon go?"
"Do you know her?"
"Of course, I do! I can smell her foul stench from inside!" imp wrinkled his nose, "This demon is extremely cruel… no matter what she says, you must not listen, not believe. But now she’s not here, so I guess you sent her back to the Twisting Nether? Ha, that wench could never seduce my great master, she simply doesn’t understand…"
"So it’s you." The succubus suddenly appeared behind Jesse, reaching out her hand. Imp yelled loudly, glowing on his body, but was suddenly grabbed by the tail and dragged out before disappearing.
"I always feel something strange in this room, don’t you?"
"Ah! I don’t want to die… don’t take me away! Noble Sayaad, merciful, beautiful and elegant witch, spare me, I spoke without thinking…"
At this, imp was so scared that he started twitching, mumbling incomprehensibly. Isn’t this guy afraid of anything?
"Master, why did you keep this thing?" Molofeel said, "I can help you get rid of it, I’m good at that…"
"No." Jesse held her arm, looking at the unconscious imp and said, "It has helped me a lot, put it back in the bag."
The succubus stared at Jesse in disbelief and asked, "You actually need its help? Even though you have me, you still need this useless thing?"
"Did you see those papers?" Jesse pointed to the pile of papers under the table and asked.
"Uh…" Molofeel hesitated for a moment and said, "I saw them, are you using those papers to learn Demonic?"
"All of those were transcribed by the imp for me, there are still some left, you kill it and then you can do this job, I noticed you enjoy creating, right?"
The succubus immediately gently put the imp into the bag, carefully tied the rope and said, "Master, let’s talk about going out instead?"
