Chapter 238: Dark Fire
Malin tried to speak but couldn’t, only letting out a painful groan. Suddenly, Jesse realized what was going on.
This is definitely not some kind of special power!
He pushed open the door and ran wildly to "The Need of Alchemists," shouting, "Shadow Protection Potion! I need a Shadow Protection Potion!"
Miss Lumere, a young lady, seeing Jesse in this state, nervously placed a bottle of Shadow Protection Potion on the table, saying, "This is the only one for 8 silver coins, sir. You can take it now and pay later."
"Thank you! Thank you!"
Jesse quickly emptied all the silver coins in his pocket onto the table, grabbed the potion, and dashed back to Malin’s study to make him drink it.
Malin knew his problem and obediently drank the potion, closing his eyes tightly, taking a deep breath, gritting his teeth, and asked to close the door quickly.
Jesse nodded, closed the door, and turned back. Malin sat on a stool by himself, looking much older and weak, completely losing his earlier confidence.
The two remained silent for a long time. Jesse could hear Malin’s breathing clearly. "It’s really over now," Jesse thought.
He couldn’t understand why this had happened. He had used Arcane magic to control the elements, so why had Shadow Power interfered?
Was his journey as an apprentice mage coming to an end?
The titles of apprentice mage, official mage, court mage… all seemed meaningless now.
He had thought that Shadow Magic had helped him get to where he was today, but now it felt like a sudden fall from grace.
Was this the price to pay? Was this the necessary sacrifice for walking the path of dark arts as Gakin had said?
Thinking back on how he cast the spell, he felt like the Arcane energy was obeying his commands, gathering all the fire elements it could gather. But as he felt the magical power rising and getting more excited, fierce Shadow Power suddenly appeared, hijacking the efforts of the Arcane energy halfway, and being ignited by those fire elements, creating a much more powerful red explosion than the spell itself!
However, during this process, Jesse thought he successfully guided the Arcane energy, feeling excited and overlooking the sudden transformation of magic until he realized the problem when the mage in front got hurt.
It seemed that the earlier supposed increase in Arcane affinity was just an illusion. From start to finish, what responded more and more eagerly to his call was the crazy chaotic power of darkness.
When he felt the magic gathering the fire elements, he felt like his blood was boiling all over, impatiently gathering shadows. This almost made Jesse lose his mind, reaching extreme excitement, seeing everything in front of him as he hoped it would be – the true Arcane flames.
Only when that bright red dark fire was completely released, did the old mage fall to the ground in pain… making him suddenly awake, realizing it was all just an illusion woven by the shadows.
"Almost took… my life, Mr. Seso," Malin mumbled quietly.
"I’m very sorry, Master, I didn’t mean to," Jesse said.
Malin took a piece of candy from the drawer, stuffed it in his mouth, sighed and said, "Of course, I know you didn’t mean to, you’re not silly! So what happened, give me a reason without needing a hearing."
Jesse said, "That black dragon… used some Black Magic on me, according to those mages from Dalaran, I was severely injured, and then I’ve been troubled by the power of darkness. But I thought it only affected me from the shadow damage, didn’t expect it would affect my magic."
"Dalaran, can you prove this?" Malin asked.
"Yes, Master Duchamp also knows," Jesse said.
Malin nodded, holding her chest and said, "Alright, Jesse Seso, I will write a letter to the Magic Defense Department of Kirin Tor to ask about this matter, and of course, I will also ask Caro. If they can both help prove it… then I will explain this to Master Andromath clearly, informing him of your special circumstances to avoid any misunderstandings. But during this time, you must attend classes honestly… and outside of class, do not cast any spells in the Wizard’s Sanctum."
"I understand, Master," Jesse nodded.
Malin leaned on the table, pointing at Jesse, "In this way, you should mention all the departments and people who can help clear your name. I will gather as much evidence, documents, guarantees, etc… so that it will be more persuasive to Master Andromath. If you can get a letter of assurance from King Varian Wrynn, then you won’t have to worry much."
"But King Varian doesn’t know about my shadow injury," Jesse said.
Malin rubbed her forehead in pain, saying, "I’m just giving an example, my naive student… Do you really want a royal noble to guarantee your risks?"
"A royal noble, how about Windrunner?" Jesse asked.
"Who’s Windrunner, Alleria Windrunner?"
"No, Vereesa Windrunner."
Malin frowned and asked, "How did you manage to get a promise from her sister?"
"I…" Jesse said, "While I was in Dalaran, I fought alongside her against Teron Gorefiend. Teron Gorefiend also used Shadow Magic to attack me. Would this also make me vulnerable to the influence of shadow?"
"Wait… why?" Malin squinted and said, "Teron Gorefiend? Why have I never heard that you encountered Teron Gorefiend? Kirin Tor… Ah… The Kirin Tor mentioned that during Teron Gorefiend’s attack on Dalaran, a certain apprentice survived, rescued by the Farstriders. Was that person you?"
"It should be," Jesse said.
"Mr. Seso, are you going to Lordaeron to visit family or to attack Dalaran?" Malin sighed and said, "But Ms. Vereesa… it must be very difficult for you to contact her, right?"
He coughed twice, took a breath, and said, "If you have her assurance, although it’s not as good as King Varian stepping in personally, considering the current diplomatic situation and the reputation of the expeditionary forces… it is definitely important enough. Can you really get it?"
"I’m not sure," Jesse said. "I can try to ask… I mean, write a letter to inquire."
"If your letter can reach Quel’Thalas, it would explain the situation enough, Mr. Seso… I wish you good luck," Malin exhaled and said. "I trust you, so I won’t hold you back. Don’t let my trust go to waste. Let’s call it a day now. I need to rest for a bit. If those darn shadows haven’t completely consumed your conscience yet, at least go next door and make me a pot of hot tea, Thistle Tea, Seso, just like before. That way, at least I can delay my fate a bit…"
