Chapter 235: The Energetic Soul
Jesse walked to the center of the magical circle, remembered the spell instructions, and began chanting the characters written on the paper.
At first, he didn’t feel anything, but as he chanted towards the middle, he clearly felt a strange sensation being pulled by some unknown force… although this strange feeling quickly faded away.
He tried to manipulate the shadows to regain this power, but it was like grasping at nothing, when he released the Shadow Magic, he rarely felt this powerless.
As he reached the ending of the spell he had been eagerly anticipating, which should have been the strongest moment to sense the magical power, everything suddenly came to a halt, leaving him slightly caught off guard.
After finishing the chant, Jesse watched as the glowing magical circle dimmed, feeling like his consciousness was still being tugged by something, taking a while before returning to normal.
Zardeth rubbed his arms, pondered for a moment, and asked, "You also don’t feel anything?"
"I can’t say I feel absolutely nothing," Jesse replied. "It seems like something is responding to this spell, but I can’t tell what it is. Do you all feel the same way?"
"More or less," Zardeth said. "Our feelings are quite similar, Gakin… he has his own understanding. As for Surena, I think there might be an issue with her spellcasting process, so I didn’t take her as a reference. Firstly, do you think this is Shadow Magic?"
"Of course," Jesse wanted to say it was a Demonic spell, but realized he shouldn’t let the people here know he had a way to learn Demonic.
Even now, he didn’t trust the people here, whether Zardeth, Gakin, Erlan, or Surena.
If he had to call anyone a friend, it might only be Ursula, the only warlock not very interested in learning magic.
"Let me ask this way," Zardeth said. "Do you think this is a more direct attack magic, or guiding Shadow Power to influence others, like Fear?"
"Do you want to hear the truth from me, Zardeth?" Jesse asked.
"Of course."
"I think this is a summoning magic," Jesse said. "When casting, I felt a connection to another world similar to Summon Imp, but not very strong."
Zardeth smiled. "I agree, Gakin always thinks it’s some kind of direct damage magic, but if it were, it would be too elaborate."
"I’m sorry, Zardeth," Jesse looked at the paper and said. "I really can’t figure out what this magic really is."
Zardeth gave Jesse a book and said, "Take this back and study it carefully to figure out what it is… If you have difficulties, we can discuss it later. Gakin and I have been working on this, hoping to see results soon."
"Okay, I understand," Jesse put the book in their bag and returned to the hall. Erlan had already left without notice. Surena was leaning against the wall and casually asked, "How come you’re back so soon?"
"No results yet."
"You’re not doing well either, imp," Surena seemed a bit drunk, but her dark skin didn’t show any blush.
She stared at Jesse, holding a beer glass, and asked, "Want to have a drink?"
"No, thank you," Jesse replied coldly.
"Why are you always so grumpy, Jesse? You act like you have so many troubles. Sometimes, I just don’t get you… Try to find ways to make yourself happier, have some fun."
After hearing this, Jesse glanced at her, walked over, clinked their half-full glass with Surena’s, and finished the drink.
"Want another drink?" Surena asked with a smile.
"No more drink," Jesse licked the beer foam at the corner of his lips and said, "I need to go home and sleep, thank you for talking to me."
When Jesse got home at night and closed the door, his drowsiness almost faded away.
"Saenor, stop what you’re doing and help me with this."
"Coming, master!" Now, for Saenor, as long as he wasn’t copying anything, all activities were considered interesting.
"Can you help me with this spell… what does it mean, and how should it be pronounced correctly?"
"Oh… master, you’ve been deceived," Saenor chuckled and said, "This is not a spell!"
"What?" Jesse asked, "Then what is it?"
"Look." Saenor pointed ahead and said, "This phrase should be recited like this, the back part is about needing a soul in motion, as for the middle part, oh… that’s actually a real spell, seems to be a summoning spell for demons from ‘Boundless Realm’."
"What is the Boundless Realm?"
"I don’t know, master, there are countless worlds in the Twisting Nether, how can I just randomly find a strange place? This must be another demon’s note to his master, I don’t know how you got it!"
Jesse thought for a while, wondering if it meant the Void Interface? Summoning Voidwalkers?
No, Saenor, the Void Lords, cannot be unaware.
What are active souls, are they Soul Shards?
But he won’t absorb souls right now…
"So, how to get souls, do we need to sacrifice a living person to successfully cast this spell?"
"Souls can be broad!" imp said, "I think it’s best to use a mortal, animals can work too, like lambs, or calves! Offer it in sacrifice when casting the spell… we’ll need a magic circle, my master."
"Can you draw?"
"Hehe, hehe." imp giggled and said, "Of course I know about sacrifices… but I have a condition…"
Jesse grabbed its neck and said, "Are you negotiating with your master?"
"No more negotiating! Whatever the master says, goes!"
"You’re smart, but too late to find a lamb or calf at this hour." Jesse let go, sat on the bed, and thought for a while before asking, "What about rats? Rats are clever, right?"
"Rats are clever," imp touched its neck and said, "but they are too weak. The master might face catastrophic failures due to insufficient soul-guided energy."
"Have you heard about the great leader of the Burning Legion wanting to personally descend to Azeroth ten thousand years ago? The portal they finally opened was destroyed by a group of weak natives. He got his head stuck as the portal closed suddenly! Haha! Having an extra horn is inconvenient, isn’t it? Haha!"
Jesse stared expressionlessly at the imp laughing wildly, slapping its knee and trembling as if having a seizure, now truly believing that it had nothing to do with the Burning Legion.
"Stop laughing, teach me the pronunciation. I bet your Common language pronunciation isn’t accurate."
"Let me spell out these words first."
With the imp’s help, Jesse refined the incantation in Demonic language, turning it into "In Ha’jed, Tulli’oksernoni, Ta’iatansa’idini, Binoduxis."
Next, there was only one animal sacrifice left, the cow was difficult, but the lamb should be manageable.
