Chapter 234: Born to Understand
Jesse looked at Zardeth’s mysterious expression and then at Surena’s face, feeling that this spell was not simple.
"Will it take a long time? I actually came to find Ursula Deline."
Zardeth said, "She just said she was going to bed, there’s no movement over there now."
"Going to bed so early?"
"Her daily routine has always been different from regular people, should we go wake her up?"
"No, I’ll come back to find her another day," Jesse said.
Zardeth said, "Since that’s the case, why don’t you come with me to see that spell? Gakin and I are both looking forward to you trying it."
"What spell is it?"
"I don’t know," Zardeth said. "That’s why I thought of letting you see it."
Hearing that, Jesse suddenly became interested.
"So cute and talented, oh my," Surena shook her head and said, "I don’t know how your parents gave birth to you, Jesse. Is there a skill to giving birth? I want to learn too…"
Erlan licked his teeth unhappily, muttering under his breath, "Crazy woman, damn, drink less…"
Surena glanced at him and muttered a few words quietly.
Jesse followed Zardeth into the nearby corridor. Zardeth said as they walked, "The day before yesterday, I heard from Ursula that you were back. Why didn’t you come to see me? You don’t seem to be in good spirits."
"I’ve been dealing with matters at Mage Quarter these past few days… ran into some trouble, but it’s all good now," Jesse explained, then asked, "How did you guys get that spell? No clue at all?"
Zardeth said, "Don’t ask where it came from. I’ve tried this spell with Gakin and Surena before, but no one could make it work. It’s a complicated magic… It’s very long and requires a lot of focus. Gakin thinks you might have some different skills from spending time with those mages, so he wants you to try it when you come back, to see what kind of spell it is."
Jesse said, "Don’t count on me to succeed for sure."
"No, but if even you can’t do it," Zardeth said, "I’ll have to go to Dun Morogh to ask around."
"Do the warlocks in Ironforge know about this spell?" Jesse asked.
"I’m not sure," Zardeth said as he led Jesse into the hallway, retrieved a book from his room, and continued toward the warlocks’ "practice room."
"They might know, they might not. We haven’t been in touch much lately. Maybe those warlocks are also busy with The Feast of Winter Veil."
Arriving at the practice room, Jesse took the piece of parchment that Zardeth handed to him from inside the book.
This piece of parchment reminded him of the Nathrezim language papers in his bag, and for a moment, the image of the mysterious necromantic ritual scene flashed through his mind.
"What’s wrong, Jesse?"
"It’s okay," he looked at the magic circle in front of him, wondering when it was drawn, and couldn’t help but ask, "Is this drawn for this spell?"
"Yes, this is a shadow enhancement magic circle obtained from a dwarf, but…it doesn’t seem to work very well. You can try using this first," Zardeth said. "Try reading it out loud, and I will correct your pronunciation."
"Just by reading it, nothing bad will happen, right?" Jesse asked.
"It would save a lot of effort if it works," Zardeth said with a wry smile.
Jesse nodded, he looked at the symbols and recognized them as Demonic transliteration with familiar pronunciations.
"Tatalini, Monta, Inhagaton, Tulilokseni, Taayantsaadi ni, Binotuxi, Tarvaiseet, Elerman, Urhaukis kisis."
It was indeed too long, as Jesse felt something off when reading the spell, stumbling over the words.
However, after hearing it, Zardeth said, "Close enough, Jesse. There’s nothing for me to correct, as I knew I could rely on you. Let’s officially begin the spellcasting, the instructions are in the book."
Jesse took Zardeth’s book, looked at the revised sentences, and asked, "Are these the spellcasting instructions obtained with the spell?"
"No," Zardeth said, "I figured out this magic gesture based on other Shadow Magic. Now, this one feels the most distinct to me. The rest, you’ll have to rely on your strong natural understanding, Jesse."
"Natural understanding?"
"What kind of look is that?" Zardeth said, "Don’t pretend to innocently look at me, Jesse Seso. Don’t tell me you are unaware of your affinity for shadows. Even Gakin can sense it, and I even think he sees you as a substitute for Mor’zul. But I always believed you’re not a replacement, Jesse, you are one of a kind."
"Don’t say that, I’m just a member of the team," Jesse said.
Zardeth nodded, "Of course, each of us has our own gifts, but most people spend their whole lives searching for their talents. The day you stepped into The Slaughtered Lamb, you cut short the long search."
Jesse wasn’t sure if Zardeth was genuinely praising him, or just encouraging him to quickly try out the spell without thinking.
In fact, he was not unaware of his connection to the shadows, but he was unsure of its source.
When he tried to unleash Shadow Magic, he could feel the surrounding shadow energy getting excited, similar to someone with mania, whereas Arcane Magic didn’t evoke such feelings.
However, for mages with strong affinity for Arcane Magic, their spellcasting process is also an exciting one.
After all, Arcane is very captivating, and on the walls of the Wizard’s Sanctum, the four Laws of Magic are inscribed –
Magic is very powerful; Magic leads to corruption; Magic is addictive; Touching the Twisting Nether is like a moth to a flame.
Jesse doesn’t have much experience with Arcane, but with Shadow… he truly feels it.
He always had a strange suspicion that, as a traveler, he had gathered too many weird things from the corners of the internet in his past life, causing a heavy build-up of dark and negative thoughts in his mind. Compared to those around him, the concentration of negative energy was too high, attracting Dark Energy like rotten meat attracts flies.
How else could he explain his connection with the shadows?
It’s just like Zardeth said, everyone has their own talents, was he just lucky?
"So, are you going to give it a try?" asked Zardeth.
"Alright," Jesse replied, "I’m just a bit unsure about this spell…"
Zardeth stepped aside and said, "As Gakin would say, this is also part of the allure of the dark arts path, isn’t it? Two thousand years ago, the Arathormages faced a bewildering path to Arcane, but eventually, they paved a different road from the elves through their own exploration. Now it’s our turn."
