Chapter 230: Land of Evil
"Wake up, hey, Greed."
The dwarf groggily lifted his head and said, "… What time is it now?"
"A little after 2."
"You woke me up at a little after 2?!"
"Now we’re not at your house," Jesse put on the bag and asked, "How are you?"
"Ah… right, we haven’t gone back home yet, darn it," Greed sat up, picked up the blood-stained armor, sniffed it, frowned, and said, "Last night when I took it off, I didn’t feel anything, but now it smells a bit gross."
Jesse asked, "I didn’t say anything about your armor…"
Greed stared at Jesse and said, "How do I feel? It’s like recovering from a major illness, feeling empty-headed and empty-hearted, overall, it’s like the normal feeling after drinking a Healing Potion."
"Are you still sleepy? I found a place that feels off, can you stand up and walk with me to check it out?"
The dwarf leaned on a nearby tree trunk, stood up, twisted his waist in place, and his bones crackled.
"I’m fine, what did you find? What feels off?"
"I can’t quite explain it."
Hearing this, Greed looked at Jesse for a while, his confused expression from before slowly turning serious.
The two people went back to that eerie place covered with tree branches. The swaying shadows inside made Jesse unsure if it was Gnoll or some other ghostly thing.
He whispered, "Can you smell that scent?"
"Yes, I smell it. This place reminds me of Duskwood," Greed said, rubbing his forehead. "What is this place? Are those shadows Gnoll, or are they ghosts?"
"I just saw it earlier. Do you think it’s related to that Necromancer?" Jesse said.
Greed whispered, "I almost forgot about that Necromancer and the undead… Why are there such strange things in Elwynn Forest? I thought Gnoll, Murloc, and bears were bad enough."
"One surprise after another, right?" Jesse patted his bag. "Saenor, can you sense any spellcasters here? Like Arcane users, Necromancers… or maybe warlocks."
"Only corpses… the smell of corpses!" Imp whispered softly.
"Are there Gnolls inside? Can you sense any living people?"
"It’s too difficult for me…" Imp said helplessly.
"Trash," said Greed.
Imp asked, "So, do you know or not?"
"How would I know?" Greed replied.
"Trash…"
Jesse covered the demon’s mockery and said, "Enough, you can stop talking now."
Greed glanced at the demon and asked Jesse, "What’s your plan? Are you going to attack this camp aggressively like before?"
"Attack?" Jesse sighed. "We don’t even know what’s inside. What if there’s a Death Knight in there?"
"Are you serious? Don’t scare me," Greed widened his eyes. "But, there’s a big difference between Death Knights. Just ask the soldiers who fought in the Hillsbrad battle! I can’t believe a Death Knight hiding in a Gnoll den would be that powerful… You eliminated one in Dalaran, right?"
"Let’s be cautious," Jesse said.
Greed said, "How about we have imp set this place on fire first? If nothing happens after burning all these wood stuff, then we can go in and take a look."
Jesse replied, "What if we accidentally burn something important? Don’t forget why we are here."
"True…" Greed said, "The bounty on this Gnoll leader seems too little, but are you sure there are valuable items inside?"
"Sure or not, I’m not Hogger, what’s the point in asking me," Jesse shrugged.
Jesse adjusted his hood and stared at the camp for a while before suggesting, "I have an idea. Let imp sneak in to see if there’s anything valuable, then we can decide our next move."
"Are you sure it’s safe?" Greed asked.
"It should be fine," Jesse assured, "If not, we can just leave imp behind and run."
Imp protested by shaking Jesse’s collar, but Jesse whispered, "If you want to stay alive, just follow my orders. Go in, check for anything important, and come out. Don’t bring out anything suspicious like last time in Westfall, or we’ll have to leave you behind. Understand?"
Nodding vigorously, imp jumped out of Jesse’s bag and dashed towards the camp, disappearing in a subtle flash.
Greed laid on the hillside watching where it had disappeared, Jesse also bent down to observe the camp’s movements.
The camp remained very quiet, without any movement, until imp appeared again next to the two of them, Jesse asked, "What’s inside?"
"Many unmoving Gnoll corpses… and some that are moving."
Jesse glanced over there again and said, "Not surprising, besides these, are there any live Gnolls?"
"Not even one." imp continued, "But there’s a human corpse in the middle, sir!"
"A human? Is it the corpse of a mercenary?" Greed asked Jesse, "Should we go in and look, would it move too?"
"It won’t move, and it’s been dead for a long time!" imp said.
Jesse said, "Let’s go closer and take a look, but be careful."
The two of them felt their way from one tree to another, as they approached this mysterious camp, Jesse peeked inside through the crooked tree gaps.
Like Imp said, there are only five Gnoll zombies here, and they don’t look very smart.
There are at least a dozen Gnoll bodies here, and strangely, they are all quite small in size.
Jesse started to wonder if he had fought with Hogger because all the Gnolls looked small to him. Then he noticed a human body he had seen earlier.
A complete human body was leaning against the wall, surrounded by a bunch of small Gnoll bodies. It was wrapped in tattered cloth, almost black, and seemed to have been here for a very long time.
The whole place smelled strongly of death.
This place is far from Westbrook Garrison, Raven Hill, and Sentinel Hill. The nearest Westbrook Garrison is separated by a large forest occupied by Gnolls, and it seems like Stormwind soldiers haven’t noticed this place at all.
"This is a real mess," whispered Greed.
This is beyond Jesse’s knowledge of Azeroth. After all, there is no such eerie place in the Elwynn Forest in the game.
"Let’s kill these undead and see what’s inside," he said.
Greed nodded, and they found a gap to sneak into. The Gnoll zombies noticed the intrusion and started screeching, but Greed and Jesse swiftly took down a few of them and worked together to defeat the remaining ones.
These Gnolls, unlike the ones raised by the Necromancer before, were not as clever. They were just a group of wild and crazy beings.
They were in a small area enclosed by decaying tree trunks and branches, filled with various Gnoll bodies piled up, ranging from fresh to old.
A human corpse sat in the middle, and Jesse realized that it wasn’t a corpse left by themselves there. It was fixed in place by the Gnolls with iron bars and nails, resembling a worshiped statue.
Jesse covered his nose as he approached the human corpse. Though it looked intact on the surface, a closer look revealed the high level of decay: blackened, cracked skin, and likely a mess inside.
This sight made him think of something very unpleasant.
Teron Gorefiend’s body.
Could this be the body of another Death Knight, the one they had been searching for?
"Come over here, Jesse!"
