Chapter 023: Farm Dusk
Following the elf’s instructions, the two headed south, and not far past the main road was a farm.
Jesse remembered that many abandoned farms south of Duskwood Road were occupied by Worgen, so he had been very cautious and observant of the surroundings well before approaching this area.
Even though they hadn’t seen any Worgen for a whole day and night, the two of them were starting to doubt Morgan’s words. But better safe than sorry, because if they really did run into them unexpectedly, it could end badly for them.
After all, Greed didn’t really know what Worgen were, and he knew they would be at a disadvantage if they got into a fight with them.
The two of them hid behind a dark, almost dead old oak tree, peeking towards the farm. Greed pointed to the lonely windmill standing across from the grain warehouse and asked, "Is that the windmill he was talking about?"
"Probably just a blade," Jesse pointed to the rapidly growing short trees and bushes covering the edge of the farm, "we’ll go that way."
Greed looked around the fence, feeling tired after touching his leg scratched by an elf.
Looking at the flat abandoned farmland full of weeds, he said, "Doesn’t seem to be any living creatures around here."
"Remember the cemetery this morning?" Jesse said.
The once peaceful cemetery turned into a zombie stronghold after they crawled out of the graves, something they would never forget.
Dwarf clearly understood Jesse’s meaning, staring into his eyes for a moment before quietly slipping into a trench-like pit on the right side that was shorter than the surrounding ground.
Walking along the edge of the farm fence towards the direction of the mill, the sky was getting darker than before, it seemed like nightfall was approaching.
"After we finish searching this farm, we have to head back no matter what, Greed," Jesse said. "The people of Raven Hill have been living here for so many years. Whether what they say about the Worgen is true or not, it signals danger at night."
"Maybe so, but we’ve come so far, it wouldn’t look good to return empty-handed," the dwarf said, not very satisfied. "If we can’t find anything, we should at least find one more thing. We are close to the main road now, much safer than when we were searching for Kingsblood before."
"Do you think it’s possible that the elf wanted to deceive us and lead us here to trap us? After all, he was treated so badly," Jesse asked quietly.
Greed, who was leading the way forward, turned back and said, "I have thought about it too, but what danger could be here? Are the elf’s companions ambushing us here? It doesn’t seem necessary. Or maybe this farm is surrounded by ghouls? It doesn’t look like it. But I can’t be sure, we just have to be cautious."
Jesse asked, "Are you going to be careful even when walking through the middle of the fields?"
"Who said we have to go through the middle?!" the dwarf retorted anxiously, then turned back and continued walking.
Jesse let out a small sigh, before he could say anything, Greed suddenly turned back and made a "shh" gesture with his index finger on his lips.
What’s going on?
He mouthed the words "there’s a wolf."
Jesse lifted his head slightly and looked around, but found nothing.
With his sharp eyesight from a day of training, he could even spot Silverleaf in the bushes. If there was a wolf, it would be hard to miss.
"Are you sure?" he whispered in Greed’s ear.
Greed wrinkled his nose and replied, "I smell something."
Wow, even a cautious animal like a wolf, skilled at hiding its tracks, can be smelled by you? Could dwarfs have some special abilities?
Jesse tried to smell too, but he didn’t notice anything.
Greed wasn’t one to make things up, so Jesse slowed down and followed him cautiously.
The mill was less than 20 meters ahead, but there was still no sign of any wolves.
Jesse looked up and saw the tall windmill with only one blade hanging down, like a giant knight wearing gray armor, standing in the dark with a wide sword in hand.
Greed crouched down and watched for a while, hoping a possible wild animal would reveal itself, but after waiting for a long time, there was no sign of movement.
"Strange." He twitched his nose and whispered, "Let’s go inside."
Jesse nodded and felt his way to the wall of the windmill. As he approached the entrance, he heard some strange, slippery noises that were not very clear.
This time it was his turn to signal silence. Greed stopped and listened quietly for a while, his eyes widening slowly.
Just as the two were listening carefully, a sound of a bone breaking interrupted the eerie noises.
It was almost certain that it was the sound of a carnivorous animal eating.
Jesse tightened his grip on the axe handle, ensuring he was holding it tightly, while Greed took an arrow and placed it on his bow.
The two nodded at each other and slowly crept inside the door.
As Jesse entered the dark mill, he couldn’t see anything at first. After his eyes got used to the darkness, he spotted abandoned tools, cobwebs on fallen walls, and a giant silver-gray thing shaking non-stop.
He glanced at Greed, whose eyes were even wider than his.
The dwarf raised his bow, aimed at the giant beast, pulled the bowstring tight, and with a squeaky sound, the giant beast suddenly stopped.
As it turned its head, Greed, not knowing if he shot bravely or dropped it in fear, saw the arrow fly through the cobwebs and cracks in the wall, hitting the giant beast’s neck. A wild roar exploded in the small mill, making Jesse’s ears ache.
The giant beast burst out, smashing through the wall and a pile of damaged farm tools on the ground. Its fur shimmered with a horrifying silver light, even under a faint beam of light coming in from outside.
Jesse brushed off the dust and wood chips, leaned against the wall, gripped the axe tightly, and stared at the monster. It wasn’t a Worgen, but a huge wolf, almost as tall as his shoulder, nothing like the wild dogs in the northern forest.
The wolf’s charge separated the two, Greed got up, raised his sword, stepped forward, and thrust it into the wolf’s side, burying his arm in its fur.
The wolf, mad with pain, didn’t weaken from the injury. It quickly turned and knocked Greed to the ground, about to pounce on him.
Jesse knew that a wolf’s waist is the weakest spot. He lifted his axe and smashed it on the wolf’s waist. The wolf was about to bite the dwarf it pinned down, but with a strike, it howled in pain, its lower body twitching uncontrollably.
Greed shouted and crawled out from under the wolf, which was convulsing and howling in pain, but couldn’t fight back anymore. Both of them dared not approach, only able to wait for the wolf to exhaust its strength slowly.
After a long time, the giant wolf finally stopped moving, and the blood flowing out had already soaked the entire floor of the mill.
After the scene quieted down, Greed muttered, "If it weren’t for that elf stabbing my leg, I would have slaughtered this wolf long ago! How could I let it pin me down?!"
Jesse glanced at him, noticing that he was covered in blood, completely red.
"Are you injured?"
"Me?!" Greed lowered his head, shivering at the sight of blood on himself, hesitantly said, "No, it’s not my blood."
