Chapter 226: Ambush
Four Gnolls walked into the forest together, making the camp suddenly much quieter without the noisy Gnolls, leaving the few remaining Gnolls silent, each doing their own thing.
One of them seemed bored, turned and walked into a tent, where there was a lot of chattering noise coming from inside. It seemed like there were more than just these six guys on the surface of the camp, there were indeed others hiding in the tents.
At this moment, a Gnoll walked up to the bonfire, holding a small burning torch in hand, about to throw it into the fire…
Boom! The bonfire suddenly lit itself up!
The flame’s color was very unnatural, with shades of dark red and sometimes a hint of eerie green, which startled the three Gnolls nearby.
"The feast is beginning, fools! Look this way quickly! There’s delicious food here!"
A strange cry grabbed all the Gnolls’ attention, as a burning ball of fire in the shape of a zigzag fled from the grass. The nearest Gnoll quickly aimed a crossbow from behind a small tent and shot a "hush," but even though the reaction was swift, the arrow landed far away from the fiery ball in the muddy ground.
"Kill! Devil! Kill! Devil!"
Several Gnolls shouted, with one holding a long knife darting out first. The Gnolls chased fast, their short legs trembling as they ran. imp panicked, shouting, "Help! You two numbskulls, come save me!"
A lightning bolt wielding a thunder hammer struck directly at the largest tent, exploding the entire structure with a loud bang. The Gnolls inside, including the one closest picking up a spear, met their end without even a scream.
The lightning bolt swiftly flew back, Greed raced over to catch the hammer, and viciously smashed down on a Gnoll who reacted, instantly shattering its shoulder and spine, causing the Gnoll to collapse as if broken.
The Gnoll shooting arrows from high up quickly reloaded and aimed at the dwarf chasing after the Gnoll with a knife, but unexpectedly got stabbed in the throat from behind by a sword.
Jesse kicked away the struggling Gnoll clutching its throat, pulled out a long sword and stabbed another Gnoll who had just picked up a spear.
Another Gnoll wielding an axe came charging from behind, but Jesse easily dodged and kicked him aside.
When the Gnoll turned around to strike again, its clothes and fur suddenly caught fire, causing it to panic.
"Burn! Haha! You wanted to hit me, wanted to kill me! You beast!" shouted an imp from afar in triumph.
Jesse took two steps forward, saw the burning Gnoll trying to escape, and swiftly slashed the Gnoll’s neck with a sword, cleanly decapitating it.
Remembering how Jesse had struggled with the bones of the Gnolls at Stonewatch Keep, and how the sword salvaged from a mercenary was not much better than the weapons at Stonewatch Keep.
With a clear comparison, Jesse started to feel the enhancement in strength.
Down the slope, a dwarf was frantically chasing two Gnolls running southwest with flames above their heads, holding a crackling war hammer.
"Greed! Greed!"
He shouted loudly, and Greed finally remembered what the plan was, and the electricity dimmed bit by bit.
The dwarf turned around and said, "Sorry, I almost forgot."
"Saenor, come back."
"Is the battle over?" imp shouted as he ran back.
"It’s over, go back into my bag."
"Oh my, I can finally speak freely now. Those humans who approached you earlier have ill intentions. They smell of blood and have killed their own kind! I’ve been wanting to tell you all this, but you wouldn’t let me talk! Those humans, one of them is skilled with a crossbow and is the most experienced, and the hardest to deal with. We should kill him first! The one with the crossbow can also do a bit of magic! Then there’s the bald one, he’s the leader! I think…"
"Shut up!"
"Umm…"
Jesse said, "Your delay is too long, why don’t you start from Dalaran?"
Imp pouted, glared at the dwarf, and climbed up holding Jesse’s cape.
"How dare you call me a fool," Greed approached and said, "I almost let it get killed by Gnoll’s sword before coming up here."
Jesse chuckled twice and said, "I have to admit, it’s quite useful."
Greed nodded, looking at the Gnoll still rolling on the ground in the camp, and said, "So now, should we wait for their reinforcements? Should we leave someone here to shout and attract attention? Otherwise, if everyone here dies, those Gnolls shouldn’t have a reason to come over, right?"
"Kill them all," Jesse said, "Don’t forget they can talk. If a Gnoll suddenly shouts a warning of an ambush when they come, what will we do? So, we have to kill them all. There’s meat and weapons in the camp, and just these things alone they won’t give up. Survival in this forest with forty or fifty Gnolls, food won’t be abundant."
"Will Hogger be scared away?" Greed asked, "I don’t think that guy is easily frightened."
"Scaring him away isn’t the problem, I’m afraid he might reveal our hiding place," Jesse said, "I don’t want to be dragged out from behind a tree for the second time."
He glanced at the Gnoll on the ground groaning with its neck pierced, thinking if it could learn a language curse, this problem might be solved.
The language curse is a very evil curse. It makes the victim speak in a strange language called Demonic, causing them to lose their ability to use spells for magic. If put on a Gnoll, it can make them lose their ability to communicate and just babble.
So, they had to visit The Slaughtered Lamb more often to find all the spells those guys could uncover. Jesse’s knowledge of spells was very limited.
Jesse lifted his sword and said, "Just need to shut those Gnolls up now."
The two walked up the hill and killed the still moving Gnolls one by one. Greed looked around and asked, "How should we ambush? There are too few leaves on the trees in winter, climbing up won’t hide us."
Jesse pointed to a fallen tree trunk to the north and said, "Let’s hide behind there. Since those two Gnolls ran southwest, their camp might be near the riverbank on that side. It should be safer for us to hide to the north, so they won’t sneak up on us from behind."
