Chapter 225: Sacrificial Ghost
Under the shade of trees on a hillside, Jesse silently recited the Mage Armor spell, debating whether to cast it for the upcoming battle. But trouble was on the horizon.
The magical effect of Mage Armor was impressive and long-lasting, requiring dispel magic to remove it.
In other words, if Jesse cast it, he might end up glowing like a light bulb in the forest for five to six hours, making it nearly impossible to sneak near the Gnoll Campsite.
Before learning Mage Armor, Jesse never anticipated facing such a dilemma.
But there wasn’t a special icon to get rid of their own magic, and the spell to dispel self-magic was really hard to learn.
As he was thinking about this, he suddenly felt his hair being pulled hard twice.
"What’s wrong?"
He turned around and saw imp urgently pointing to the top of the slope. Jesse whispered, "Disappear!"
Imp immediately hid inside the Warlock Pack, Jesse lay down close to the slope, and then dwarf suddenly snored. Jesse quickly shook his foot.
When Greed woke up and saw Jesse’s expression, he got nervous and quickly crawled next to him, shrinking his neck.
Jesse pointed upward, Greed nodded, both held their breath and listened for a while, and sure enough, they heard a noisy sound of footsteps.
Along with the footsteps were the sounds of quiet breathing and soft movements, like a group of wild dogs searching for food.
Both of them knew that they had encountered real Gnolls.
Greed touched his hammer and held it up to his face with a fierce look. Jesse waited for a moment to see Gnoll’s reaction, confirming Gnoll hadn’t noticed the sound below, then shook his head while holding the hammer.
He used both hands to make gestures of two tiny people walking, then pointed up.
Greed suddenly understood.
As Gnoll’s footsteps became lighter and almost disappeared, Jesse patted his bag and whispered, "Come out and keep an eye out for any other Gnolls approaching."
Imp patted his chest, and Jesse and Greed climbed up the hill, following the direction where Gnoll’s footsteps had vanished.
The Gnolls were not walking in a straight line, but patrolling through the forest. However, both of them were patient, knowing that all patrol teams eventually return to their campsite.
As long as they followed from a distance, they could always find at least one of the campsites.
The sunlight grew dimmer, casting longer shadows from the trees in the forest, and the two finally arrived at a campsite.
This campsite looked more like a human campsite than a Gnoll Campsite, with tents and campfires set up in a way that resembled human work.
This gang of Gnolls likely attacked a group of travelers or mercenaries resting here, then took over and fortified these facilities as their own.
Jesse peeked from afar, roughly counted the number of Gnolls, and quietly told Greed, "There are about ten of them, and I didn’t see Hogger."
"There are a bit too many of them," Greed whispered, "and many of these Gnolls have long-range weapons like bows and crossbows. They really know how to use bows, so I don’t think it’s safe. Are you planning to take down this camp?"
"We could wait for the patrol to leave first," Jesse whispered, "It’s too troublesome to find Hogger, Greed. What if we let a Gnoll go and Hogger comes to check the situation? He’s the tribe leader; seeing his brothers being killed, he won’t just ignore it, right? It would damage his reputation."
"So you want to ambush them here," the dwarf asked as he crawled up to Jesse, "Then why don’t we chase after the Gnoll that ran away and go straight to Hogger’s lair?"
Jesse whispered, "The sheriff told me that the Riverpaw clan on this side of the river has about forty to fifty members. If there are ten here, could Hogger’s ‘main camp’ possibly have more than twenty Gnolls? Do you really want to attack a small fortress with twenty members?"
Greed stroked his beard and muttered, "It’s indeed quite challenging."
"Yes," Jesse lowered his voice and said, "When they come, if there are too many people we can still choose to escape, which is much safer than wandering around in the forest."
Greed stared at the firelight over there for a while and quietly asked, "Will Hogger fall for it?"
"Gnolls are not wild animals, but they can be a bit slow. Don’t worry too much," Jesse whispered, "If Hogger is smart and doesn’t come, we can find a place to rest for the night and check again tomorrow. No need to rush, I won’t make you jump off a bridge."
"Okay, we’ll do it your way," Greed took a breath and said, "Should I charge in directly here or something else?"
Jesse tapped on Greed’s armor, asking, "Is this plan reliable?"
Greed touched his face and said, "Even armor can’t stop arrows from hitting here. It’s just about okay. It was useful to deal with those fools at noon."
"I have an idea," Jesse said, "Saenor, you go show yourself first and then run."
"Yes!" Greed immediately grinned, "Let him go in and face the danger first!"
Realizing his voice was too loud due to excitement, he quickly covered his mouth.
Imp shook Jesse’s collar and his tongue was wagging. Jesse held his neck and said, "You don’t need to say anything. Just do as I say. When the patrol leaves later, sneak over, light the fire at the Gnoll Campsite for them. It’s already night and the fire should be lit…"
"When they spot you, run, and then we’ll surprise attack them from outside. If you mess up, you’ll be the one in trouble. We’ll stay hidden, understand?"
The imp nodded sadly, his hands hanging down by his side as he sat on the side.
"Oh no, Jesse, I can’t believe I’m starting to feel sorry for this demon," Greed said, then couldn’t help but grin a few times.
He suddenly changed his smiling expression and pointed at Jesse, reaching out and saying, "Hey, look, they’re about to leave."
"So soon?" Jesse turned around to see four Gnolls shouting something at the Gnolls in the camp, preparing to leave.
He felt like he could even understand what the Gnolls were saying, as if it was about food, nighttime or something. Could it be that Gnolls speak a common language between themselves? Or is it a dialect of some common language?
"It’s up to you now, demon," Greed said gloatingly.
