Chapter 224: The Strange Coin
Jesse glanced at the corpse on the ground that tried to grab the magic wand, saying, "Let’s move faster, not wait for the Gnolls to arrive. I overheard them talking before and it sounded like they recently had a conflict with the Gnolls, so I think there are quite a few Gnolls nearby."
"Okay," said Greed, "I’ll go check out the ones further away."
Jesse looked in his pocket, but there was nothing there.
He examined the sword he had found, thinking it could maybe be sold for two or three silver coins. However, carrying weapons was difficult, so he decided to wrap it up and bury it to keep it hidden from the Gnolls.
He picked up a sword that seemed to be in good condition and hung it on his waist, then went to look for the man who had attacked him.
Turning him over and opening his armor, Jesse suddenly noticed a coin imprint on the man’s shirt under his chest.
Jesse reached out and took out a not very round coin.
However, Jesse had never seen the material or the design on the coin before. It was not a troll beast totem or the likeness of any king he knew. It looked more like the head of a barbaric monster.
Not sure if it was due to war, the coin was heavily worn, making the image of the head hard to distinguish. Was this the Loa god worshiped by trolls?
Jesse placed the coin in his bag and then went to the burnt body of the bald man. The body was all stuck together. Jesse tried to search for useful things in the man’s burnt clothes but the smell was unbearable, so he gave up eventually.
At that moment, Greed also returned.
"About thirty silver coins, no gold coins, Jesse. Unfortunately, the crossbow is already burnt and not usable. But there’s still something else you’ll like."
He handed over a bottle of beginner Mana Potion as he spoke.
"There should be three bottles, two are broken," Greed said. "I remember this stuff isn’t cheap, right?"
"Indeed," Jesse replied as he took it. "So, the one with the crossbow is really a mage!"
"Probably," Greed said. "He also had a book, but it’s mostly burnt. Probably just a mediocre magician like you."
Jesse coughed unhappily and said, "Too bad, didn’t get to see what magic he knows."
Greed mentioned, "He doesn’t even believe in his own magic. Rather shoot with the crossbow than cast a fireball or something."
Jesse commented, "Maybe he only knows a Light Spell, to light the way for these people when they go out at night. How powerful can a mage be with such a low-level team, right?"
"You’re too harsh on him," Greed shook his head. "What about you, did you find anything?"
Jesse handed over the strange coin and asked, "Can you tell what kind of coin this is?"
"Isn’t this an Orc gold coin?" Greed remarked.
"Gold coin?" Jesse examined the coin. It did seem more gold-colored than a regular silver coin, but it didn’t look like a real gold coin either when Greed pointed out the castle and Orc head symbols on it.
Greed explained, "Look at the castle and Orc head on it, this is Orc currency. We can sell it when we get back."
"This is an Orc head?" Jesse pointed to the horn on the coin, "Have you ever seen an Orc with horns on its head?"
Greed replied, "Maybe there are Orcs with horns. They call this symbol Orc gold coin. People in Dwarven District used to trade them for about ten silver coins each."
Jesse glanced at the so-called gold coin again. His mind suddenly jumped to a possible connection with what Greed had said.
Is this an Ogre coin, perhaps?
The Ogres once had a powerful empire called Highmaul in Draenor, where Orcs were just slaves at that time.
The head with horns is likely the Ogre head of the emperor.
Because it’s weird for an Ogre to stamp his head on coins in Azeroth, Jesse ignored this possibility earlier. However, if it’s the two-headed Ogre wise rulers ruling the Goria Empire, it’s totally possible. And the material of this coin is more likely some kind of precious metal from Draenor, like gold, cyan gold, and the like.
"So were these people bribed by Orcs?" Jesse asked.
"Maybe, but it’s hard to say," Greed said. "What if it’s just some lucky gold coin or something?"
Jesse nodded, gave the silver coin to Greed to keep in the bag, and both of them buried the remaining weapons in a inconspicuous place, then walked south for a while and took a break under a cliff.
While chewing on bread, Jesse thought that the bread didn’t have much flavor and tasted like blood in his mouth.
This blood was his own, squeezed out from his broken veins after extracting the life force from his enemies. If his life force couldn’t repair the damage at the same time, he probably would have died from such a major bleeding.
Even though this was the fourth time, he had almost gotten used to it.
Jesse felt that the bread tasted strange, spat out a bit of bread in his hand and saw that the bread was dipped in a bit of blood.
Greed sat on the nearby dirt slope and asked, "Are you really okay?"
Jesse replied, "I should be fine," while putting another piece of food into his mouth, "It’s not the first time anyway."
The dwarf asked, "How does it feel to use Black Magic to kill someone?"
Jesse glanced at the magic wand in his hand, as if it was savoring the taste of victory.
He wanted to tell him how satisfied he felt, but in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to be so heartless.
Greed looked at Jesse’s bloodshot eyes and said, "Honestly, when you cast that spell just now, you looked like a vampire from legend." He continued, "Of course, I’m not saying you shouldn’t have killed that menace or tried to heal yourself, but…"
"Forget it, maybe I’m just overthinking." He lay down on the slope, "I’m tired, I want to take a nap. It’s been too exhausting earlier. Wake me up in about two hours, and we’ll continue."
"I’m thinking maybe I should take a nap too, even though I’m not tired yet," Jesse said.
Greed lay down on his arm, closed his eyes, and said, "If you fall asleep again, we might both end up with our throats slit."
Jesse said, "Can elves go without sleep for several days?"
Greed grumbled, "I heard some Elf Rangers can go eight days without sleep and still fight trolls on the ninth day like killing machines created by ancient gods. But we can’t do that. We are naturally built for sleeping, and fighting is just a hobby for us."
After saying this, Greed fell asleep, leaving Jesse envious of how quickly he could doze off. Even without Greed’s comment, Jesse knew that the battle against the expanding shadow power was an ongoing struggle with no end in sight.
As his magic grew stronger, the battle intensified, forcing his willpower to match to avoid losing all progress due to a moment of weakness.
