Chapter 215: New "Student"
Jesse took Vereesa back to the Mage Quarter and asked her to wait in the garden below the Wizard’s Sanctum for a while.
He had originally planned to go find Amy, but as he started climbing the stairs, he suddenly saw Old Malin coming out of the tower.
"Master! It’s me, Jesse! Jesse Seso!"
Jesse squeezed through groups of mages on the winding bridge to reach Malin, who finally managed to recognize who was calling him.
Picking up his eyeglasses, he said, "I thought you weren’t planning to come back, there’s been some trouble in Dalaran, right? I haven’t had a chance to go see Caro Duchamp to ask about it."
"It’s really big, Master. I’ll tell you more later." Jesse said, "But I was wondering where my apprentice apartment is. Shouldn’t I have my own apartment?"
Malin looked at the student in front of him and asked, "I thought you didn’t live in the apartment? Amy asked you about it before."
"I do live there! Back then, I was just an assistant, not really a mage yet."
"Changed your mind? Luckily I haven’t canceled it for you this year. Do you want to go check it out?"
"Yes, please."
"Alright." Malin pulled out a book from his pocket and flipped through it, mumbling to himself, "This is the benefit of coming back early, Mr. Seso. Everything can be taken care of, everything can be arranged in time."
Hearing that his room was still available, Jesse felt a huge sense of relief.
If things didn’t work out here, he would probably have to go find Greed. After all, the area where he lived was already overcrowded, and it was impossible to find a vacant room.
But arranging for an elf to stay in the Dwarven District, isn’t that like a volcano erupting or lightning striking on plain ground, causing chaos?
Even though Greed thinks highly of Vereesa, the other people in the Dwarven District don’t care who she is, so it definitely can’t be considered "safe".
Malin pointed to an address on a small booklet and said, "See this? Get the key from the old lady who watches the apartments inside. If she’s not there, it should be a chubby man speaking with a northern accent. Remember to go to Master Andromath’s office lobby this afternoon or tomorrow to register. There will be many people, so don’t be late."
"Got it," Jesse said. "Thank you, Master."
"No need to thank me, just study well and don’t tarnish the king’s reputation. By the way, where is your wizard robe?" Malin asked, adjusting his glasses.
"Unlucky, it was burned by the Death Knight," Jesse replied.
The old mage was startled by this, stared at Jesse’s eyes for a while and then said, "We should definitely have a good chat another day, Mr. Seso."
"Yes, Master, I’ll take my leave now, goodbye!"
After speaking, Jesse turned and walked through groups of mages to the bottom garden, where he found Vereesa looking like she was about to fall asleep, resting her chin in her hand and struggling to stay awake, but managing to raise her head when she heard someone approaching.
"There’s a place to stay, let me show you the way."
When she heard that, Vereesa felt much better again.
Jesse took her to the Mage Quarter according to the address Malin had given her. The Slaughtered Lamb was on another side street just ahead, the sign flickering.
Just the thought of a bunch of strange characters waiting for her in the basement made her feel worried.
Luckily, her apartment was not nearby. She walked a bit further before finally arriving at the cream-colored house with green tiles.
This place was much quieter than the Wizard’s Sanctum. Jesse pushed open the door with a creak. Inside was a narrow staircase, feeling so tight whether looking up or down, as if there was barely enough space to pass through, with the whole area seeming to leave only a crack for one person to squeeze through.
An old lady next to her opened a small side door and asked, "Are you an apprentice? Or an apprentice mage?"
Jesse made way for the small door and said, "I am an apprentice, ma’am."
"Ring," the old lady motioned with her finger.
Jesse showed her the ring, and the old lady grabbed Jesse’s finger to take a closer look before letting go.
She went back to the small side door to search for something, then came back and handed a key to Jesse, saying, "Twenty-one on the fourth floor, go up. Um, is this a… elf? Do elves also come to Wizard’s Sanctum to learn magic? Isn’t Quel’Thalas much better?"
"Now everyone is part of the Lordaeron Alliance, madam," Jesse said. "Thank you."
With that, he led Vereesa up the stairs one after the other. Vereesa followed quietly and said, "The humans here seem to be quite friendly to the Quel’dorei… Earlier, Alleria told me that people outside Dalaran are all hostile towards us, so I should be careful."
"So she’s going to marry a Lordaeron noble?" Jesse asked.
"You know about this too?"
Jesse turned back and said, "Not just me, the whole alliance knows about it."
Vereesa said worriedly, "I don’t think this is a good idea."
Jesse asked, "Do you want to interfere with your sister?"
"I dare not interfere with her, I just feel uneasy about it," Vereesa said. "But now I can’t do anything about it either."
"When can you beat her before saying that, at least you have to beat Turalyon first?" Jesse joked.
"You’re right, I think the same way," Vereesa said seriously. "And I might not necessarily lose to him. You’ve seen me fight Teron Gorefiend before. You’re a human too, so tell me, if it was Turalyon instead, could he handle it?"
"I… I can’t say," Jesse said, glancing at her, wondering if she really planned to beat up Turalyon herself. Is this sister-in-law still so traditional nowadays?
Vereesa snorted coldly, clearly unhappy. Jesse wisely swallowed his saliva and continued upstairs.
In the dark, decaying floral-scented fourth-floor corridor, Jesse counted and felt his way to the room number, opened the door with a key, and a strong scent of book paper filled the air.
Although it was a bit more cramped than the place he rented, at least it really looked like a simple study, not an unlit outhouse. There was even a broken bookcase that seemed older than the building itself.
Jesse carefully observed the place and felt that even if there were imps around, his belongings could keep him imprisoned here, much like in Dalaran.
But since he needed to learn Demonic, he couldn’t risk it. A demon standing outside every day copying things would sooner or later be noticed by the messy and inexperienced mages in the apartment building.
"This place is definitely far from Quel’Thalas, but well, it’s livable for sure." Jesse handed the key to Vereesa and said, "When you leave, just return this key to Master Malin where you got it from, or you can give it to his daughter Amy. You met her this morning."
"I remember now, but isn’t this actually your room?" Vereesa took the key, pointing at the sign on the door and said, "Your name is still written on it." Jesse squinted and looked over, there was indeed a not very obvious "Seso" on the metal sign, with an added first initial of Jesse, which he hadn’t noticed before.
"I am renting a place outside, it’s closer to the trade district and more convenient, plus the conditions are much better than here."
"I see." Vereesa touched the table with her finger, saying, "Actually, this place is much better than I imagined, I had planned on sleeping in the forest these days."
"Not really, at least there’s a place to lie down." Jesse said, "By the way, if someone asks, I’ll use the alias, Asselwin."
Vereesa placed the package on the table, paused, and said, "Of course, especially don’t tell the other Quel’dorai, just call me Asselwin… uh…"
"Sunfury? Sunstrike?" Jesse reminded.
Vereesa turned pale, quickly waving her hands, "No, absolutely not."
"Goldenthorn, I like the word Goldenthorn, so it’s Asselwin Goldenthorn, if there’s any trouble, I don’t want to upset the royal relatives."
"Alright, I’m not very familiar… let’s leave it at that." Jesse pushed in a half-open drawer on the desk, saying, "Good luck with your investigation, Ms. Asselwin Goldenthorn, I’ll take my leave."
"Wishing you good luck with your studies, Jesse, thank you very much!" said Vereesa.
Jesse nodded, closed the door, and looked at his name on the door, wondering what all this was about… Helping Sylvanas’s sister find a house in Stormwind?
He was curious about many things, like why she used a fake name, why she came alone, and so on… But Vereesa seemed hesitant to ask deeper questions, so he didn’t.
However, he had a vague feeling that she was intentionally excluding external factors, wanting to prove her strength to her family through this task.
While in Dalaran, Vereesa mentioned that her relationship with her two sisters is currently poor. Could it be related to this matter?
Thinking about it, Jesse glanced at his watch—it was already three in the afternoon, and he still had to register.
