Chapter 214: The Wanderer
Walking behind Jesse, Vereesa Windrunner kept her hood up the whole time, looking wary of everyone on the street.
Entering The Gilded Rose, it was not early anymore but not yet noon, so there weren’t many people inside.
She followed Jesse to a corner, and after sitting down, she sat up straight and kept her hands below the table, looking quite nervous.
"What can I get you two to drink, or would you like to have something to eat?"
The waiter came over and asked in surprise, "Are you a miss elf from Quel’Thalas?"
Vereesa looked up and said, "Yes, I am… an elf."
Jesse glanced at her awkwardly, it was his first time hearing the word "elf" from an elf.
"We have a hot apple cider that elves like. Interested in trying a glass?" the waiter asked.
"Then I’ll have that, thank you," Vereesa nodded.
"I’ll just have a light beer," Jesse said. "What would you like to eat?"
"Why don’t you place the order, Mr. Jesse Seso."
"Okay, we’ll have a plate of almond chocolate cookies, a plate of salted crackers, and a sweet cheese," Jesse ordered.
"Alright," the waiter nodded slightly and left.
Vereesa looked very uncomfortable, completely different from when she was in Dalaran. She felt out of place here both in appearance and emotion, not fitting in with the whole city.
"Just call me Jesse, Ms Vereesa," Jesse spoke first. "I’m not used to being called Mr. Seso, it makes me feel like a teacher is looking for me, which can be nerve-wracking."
Vereesa nodded and asked, "Jesse… how is your friend, Greed Thunderfist, doing?"
"He’s recovering well, I thought I wouldn’t have a chance to thank you," Jesse said. "So, if there’s anything I can help with, as long as I can do it, I won’t refuse."
"You might have guessed," Vereesa said, "I came here for that letter. I’m investigating the recipient of the order, that tribe member named Angol Mok’gar, I need some relevant clues. Currently, we know almost nothing about him except his name."
Jesse suggested, "If we follow the Orc naming conventions, I think his surname may be related to death wishes or a strong will to cause death, like that Mok’gar."
"I don’t want to know how Orcs name themselves," Vereesa whispered. "I only care about how to find him."
Jesse tapped his finger lightly on the table and said, "His name might be related to his tribe, Ms. Vereesa, or it could represent his power, or maybe a title he acquired after achieving some feat. I think this could be a very important clue."
"For example, if his surname was gained after becoming a Death Knight, then Necromancy might have turned him into a ruthless and brutal undead madman, hence why others call him that, and proudly he adopts it as his new surname. This means you should be more careful when dealing with him."
Vereesa paused for a moment and said, "Sorry, I understand now, I will pay attention to this."
Jesse realized that she could hardly hide her hatred towards Orcs, which was starting to affect her judgment.
Although he could understand her anger, considering that a significant part of the Windrunner Family members were killed in the Orc War, he felt this shouldn’t be the right mindset for tracking a powerful and cunning warlock.
However, seeing Vereesa’s fighting prowess when facing Teron Gorefiend directly, he felt his worries were unnecessary.
"Did someone from the Reliquary tell you my name?" He asked.
"Almost," Vereesa replied. "Although Sylvanas didn’t directly say the clue was from the Reliquary, I guess that order must have come from them. Did you deliver it to them?"
Jesse nodded, and at that moment, the sommelier placed two glasses of wine in front of them.
He took a sip of his wine, while noticing Vereesa only sniffed hers and didn’t touch a drop, glancing at the departing sommelier.
Vereesa’s stare at the sommelier was cold and wary, reminding him of how she looked the first time they met in that tavern in Dalaran.
When Jesse placed his cup down, the elf asked, "So, do you have any more clues about this recipient? After all, you’re the first person in the Lordaeron Alliance to receive this letter. Like his identity, his power, where he might be hiding, things like that. Should I go investigate the missing Orc spellcaster in Deadwind Pass, or a undead human? I guess he could also be hiding in The Black Morass."
Hearing this, Jesse scratched his head, realizing he had forgotten the lie he told at the meeting, it was quite troublesome.
"No need to rush, I think it would be better for you to go to South Elwynn. I believe that Orc Warlock messenger’s destination is around Duskwood, which is now part of South Elwynn, in that black forest area, he just met with an accident in Deadwind Pass."
"I understand."
The elf glanced at the cookies just placed on the table, and asked, "Can I…"
"Of course," Jesse continued, "And, there’s another clue that I’m quite interested in, the Worgen legend of Duskwood."
"Worgen?" Vereesa had just taken a bite of a cookie, catching the crumbs with her hand, she looked surprised and hesitantly asked, "Do humans also have legends of Worgen?"
Jesse explained, "They have always had them, mostly used by parents to scare children into obedience. But in Duskwood, people have actually witnessed some strange occurrences. However, neither the Wizard’s Sanctum investigation, nor the local sheriff’s investigation, have found any concrete clues related to Worgen."
"I’ve always suspected it might be a Death Knight appearing, using Shadow Magic to harm a local resident, confusing their senses to forget their appearance and such…. Of course, that’s just a personal guess because the characteristics are similar – tall, more human-sized than Orc, but walking hunched over, and using Shadow Magic. If not actual Worgen, besides Death Knight, I don’t think there are many other possibilities left, what do you think?"
"That does sound suspicious," Vereesa wiped off some chocolate from her lips and asked, "Have you ever tried to find that guy too?"
"I have been curious too, since I tried translating the letter myself," Jesse stuffed a whole cookie into his mouth and said, "But I don’t have the ability to really search. I need to learn magic and have my own job. I can only spare a bit of free time to think about it. So, this is where I am at… no more clues for now."
"Duskwood, South Elwynn, the Worgen legend… I understand now."
Vereesa asked, "How far away is it approximately?"
"It’s about one or two hundred miles south, still within the Kingdom of Stormwind’s territory. If you want to go there, either take the three-way split in Redridge, or go through Westfall. Do not attempt to cross the Nazferiti river directly, as there are no inns or villages along the way, making it much more dangerous."
"Thank you for your advice," Vereesa said, "Is the capital there called Grand Town? I think I remember that location."
Jesse found the exotic term "capital" a bit odd, but he nodded and said, "Many people now call it Darkshire. If you are going there to investigate, it’s best to take the Redridge road. Going west will take you on a detour. Did you come here alone?"
"Yes, alone," Vereesa said, "I don’t want anyone else involved in this matter."
Looking at the person in front of her, she quickly added, "Um, I mean other people from Quel’Thalas."
Jesse took a sip of wine and asked, "Is there a special reason?"
The other person hesitated for a moment, seeming reluctant to speak. Jesse quickly said, "It’s okay, I was just asking casually."
"How is your injury?" Vereesa seemed to want to change the subject.
"It’s nothing." Jesse shrugged and said awkwardly, "Thanks to the Sunwell, my shoulder hasn’t been as painful since leaving Dalaran. Now, apart from occasional dull pain, it no longer affects my normal activities."
Vereesa said, "I still remember that wound… if you’ve recovered so well, it means you have a strong physical fitness, Jesse."
"Thank you, not many people have praised my physical fitness." Jesse asked, "What about you, I don’t think I’ve ever asked you, I remember you were injured when fighting Gorefiend."
"I just got touched by his Shadow Magic, no serious issues. I fully recovered in Dalaran." Vereesa replied, "Otherwise, Sylvanas wouldn’t have allowed me to come this far south alone."
After chatting about Quel’danil, Jesse felt like the other person still had something to say, but it probably didn’t concern him.
They had almost finished eating and were about to pay when Vereesa suddenly said, "Actually, Jesse, I have something I’d like your help with."
"Of course, madam," Jesse set down the wine glass.
Vereesa held a cookie in her hand and said, "I don’t have a place to stay right now."
"Perfect, this is not just a tavern, but also an inn," Jesse said, resting his hand on the table. "It shouldn’t be too expensive for a night."
The elf shook her head, saying, "I don’t want to stay in a room I can’t trust, Jesse, especially in an inn. So, I’m hoping you can help me find a safer place to stay. The last time I was in Stormwind with my sister, I stayed in King Varian’s palace and never left the garden, so I don’t know much about this place. You’re the only person I know in this city now."
Jesse wanted to ask how a Windrunner wouldn’t know anyone, then realized she was using a fake name.
So, a place to stay… A place to stay… a house… Even though Vereesa was not familiar with the human world, Jesse had been living here for over two years and even he found it overwhelming.
Even Greed needed to plan ahead for finding a house, especially in the Dwarven District where he knew people. How could Jesse possibly find a suitable room in such a short time in the city?
And it had to be a safe place to stay… Is there such a thing as true safety?
He initially thought he couldn’t help, then remembered that as an apprentice in the Mage Quarter, he might have a single apartment available, which Amy Malin could help him find.
Actually, as an apprentice, he should have been given a small single room for the new school year. When he goes to register with the mage, he can also ask about it.
But why not move into the academy’s apartment by himself?
It’s a bit uncomfortable to let a stranger stay in a good room while renting a run-down house for himself. He just needs to get rid of his illegal dark magic study materials and most importantly, throw that imp into the Mage Quarter. He can’t relax at all.
"I will ask for you, Ms. Vereesa. I should be able to find out in the next two days. If not, I will go ask the dwarf."
Vereesa fell silent for a while after hearing Jesse’s words.
"Is it possible… to do it today?"
"Is it that urgent?"
"To be honest, I haven’t slept since arriving in Stormwind, Jesse. Today is the third day," Vereesa sighed.
"Three days?!" Jesse was taken aback. "Aren’t you tired?"
Vereesa said, "I don’t need as much sleep as dwarfs, but I’m really struggling to stay awake… According to the information they gave me, you should have been back in Stormwind a long time ago, but that was just the arrival time of Master Caro Duchamp, and you weren’t even on the ship. So I came a few days early and still haven’t found a suitable place to rest."
"I went to Hinterlands," Jesse said.
Vereesa rubbed her forehead and said, "I only remembered this after seeing Master Duchamp."
"So, how about this? Come with me and we’ll ask around. Will you still drink this cup of wine?"
"Um, no, sorry."
Jesse picked up the cup of hot apple cider, finished it in a gulp, and then asked the sommelier next to him after a pause, "How much is it in total?"
"3 silver coins and 12 copper."
"Just this little thing for 3 silver coins? Do you think I’m also from out of town?"
"Hot apple cider, 2 silver coins and 40 copper."
"Oh? Is this apple made of silver or is the wine made of silver?"
After Jesse finished speaking, he glanced at Vereesa, who looked confused, and resisted the urge to swear.
"Alright, alright…" He took out 3 silver coins and a copper coin and placed them on the table. "Let’s go."
