Chapter 211: Happy Flying
Greed jumped onto the back of the gryphon and said, "Come up, Jesse, we don’t have a saddle, only a few straps I brought, so be sure to grab on tight for your own safety."
Jesse climbed up and felt like the gryphon underneath him was like a giant vibrating massage chair, just a slight movement made him feel like he was about to fall over, and if they were to fly later, wouldn’t he just be thrown off?
"How should I grab on…"
"Just don’t grab me, grab onto anything else!" Greed said, "Otherwise, both of us will be in trouble, I won’t be able to save you."
"This is too difficult." Jesse hesitated for a moment and said, "How about you sit at the back, let me hold onto the gryphon’s neck, after all, you’re a knight, you’re much steadier than me!"
"That can be tried," the dwarf said.
Jesse moved to the front and held onto the gryphon’s neck tightly, when the gryphon rumbled, he felt his whole body itching from the vibrations.
Greed secured the straps, shouted something in Dwarven language, the gryphon spread its wings, and suddenly Jesse felt dizzy and light-headed…
"Oh my… my goodness…" It seemed like even Greed couldn’t handle it!
Jesse had a bad feeling… But it didn’t stay in his mind for more than two seconds. Just when Jesse thought he was flying, the trees around him suddenly seemed to disappear quickly.
He almost fainted at once, but then came a crazier dizziness… The whole world seemed mixed up, with green, blue, black, and yellow swirling together.
He held onto the gryphon’s neck and didn’t dare do anything else. He thought he could enjoy the beautiful view of the Hinterlands from the sky, but now he couldn’t even see the scenery. The sudden acceleration made him feel like he might have a stroke and die.
Greed roared loudly, the gryphon roared too, and although Jesse wanted to shout, he couldn’t make a sound. The howling wind made it hard for him to breathe.
After finally regaining consciousness and catching his breath behind the gryphon’s neck, Jesse managed to see the ground scenery from the corner of his eye and realized how fast they were traveling.
By the time the gryphon landed, Jesse was almost losing his sense of space and time.
Sliding off the gryphon and touching the ground, he felt like he wasn’t landing but being lifted by a huge flat board. He couldn’t stand steadily, feeling wobbly for a while before finally finding his footing.
As he regained his normal senses, the first thing Jesse did was vomit. He collapsed on the muddy road and couldn’t care less about the people around him staring and gasping in astonishment, just focusing on vomiting.
After vomiting until his belly felt empty, he leaned against the nearby wall, looking blankly ahead. The people pointing and gossiping, the children exclaiming at the gryphon, and the soldiers watching all made strange noises, which should have been loud, but Jesse felt they were eerily quiet, as if they were making sounds underwater.
Not just people, even the air became frozen, everything in sight seemed to be motionless, completely devoid of movement.
Jesse realized that he hadn’t fully recovered from the crazy shaking and speed in the air yet.
Greed sat down next to him at that moment, with a vacant and lifeless look in his eyes.
The black gryphon came running and jumping to their side, continuously making loud cries. Greed tried to soothe it using the Dwarven language, but the gryphon seemed to pay no attention at all, nudging him with its head and swiping with its tail.
Jesse cleared his throat and asked with effort, "Where are we?"
Greed squinted, reaching out to grab the gryphon’s tail, and said, "Obviously… Southshore."
"I don’t recognize this place as Southshore," Jesse replied.
"Do you see those charred houses over there?" Greed punched the gryphon’s front paw and then pointed to a nearby building being cleared by some workers, saying, "This is Southshore."
Jesse nodded, looking at him with a queasy expression, and said, "Aren’t you a Gryphon Rider? Why do you look unwell too?"
"She had no training at all, Jesse Seso." Greed grabbed the gryphon’s tail firmly and said, "Riding a horse is not always fun, especially a wild one like a gryphon without a saddle. I never rode a wild gryphon so far, I thought we could fly to Southshore, but I admit now, it’s too dangerous. This is too risky, let’s not do this again."
"You, a trained dwarf, riding an untrained gryphon." Jesse finished speaking, trying to point to his chest, but accidentally pointed to his lips.
"And I, an untrained human, riding an untrained gryphon."
"At least you can hold onto its neck." Greed was pushed around by the gryphon’s head rubbing his face, struggling to grab its neck, and said, "I can only sway around while you can hold on…"
"What… is it going to do?" Jesse asked.
Suddenly a carriage passed by, and the gryphon lifted its neck, knocking Greed down.
The two horses in the front of the carriage neighed in fear, and the driver yelled in panic, "Quick… Don’t let that bird-headed monster see us here! Are you Wildhammer dwarves trying to kill me?!"
"It wants to eat meat!" Greed struggled to stand up, jumped and covered the gryphon’s eyes, shouting, "We need to act fast to get it some food, or it might eat someone else’s horses…"
After a while of struggling, they finally calmed the gryphon down and bought some raw meat from the butcher to feed it.
After sending it away, the next few days were spent waiting for the ship to arrive.
The spider silk collected in the Hinterlands was sold to a cloth merchant in Southshore for ten silver coins. It took asking several stores to realize that collecting spider silk was a specialized job, and just cleaning the impurities and dust off it incurred a significant cost for regular people.
However, the ten silver coins did provide a slight boost to the living expenses for the two of them these days.
Jesse practiced the spell of Mage Armor skillfully, consuming all the remaining Mana Potion in the process.
However, by the last evening, he was able to successfully cast a Mage Armor spell that lasted around five hours within approximately twenty to thirty seconds.
However, a new issue arose – the shimmering light on the Mage Armor, even though it gradually faded after casting, did not completely disappear.
If he took off his clothes, the layer of shimmering elemental light tamed by Arcane would subtly move on his skin; and if he put on clothes, it would slowly rise to the surface.
It was not very noticeable inside the house, but stood out distinctly outside, making the whole person look peculiar.
Greed indulged himself completely, feasting and drinking lavishly every night. Luckily, during this season in this small town, there weren’t any particularly expensive foods that would bankrupt him, so in the end, he didn’t spend too much money.
On the morning of January 5th, before the sun had risen, Jesse Seso boarded the ship heading back to Stormwind. Standing on the deck, he gazed back at the coastline, feeling like his arrival here over a month ago was a distant memory.
Back then, he only cared about saving money to survive. The thought of The Scourge Legion, demon invasions, and black dragon turmoil seemed unrelated to him as a young apprentice.
Now, he couldn’t erase those thoughts from his mind.
Jesse glanced at the top of the magic wand he held, where Teron Gorefiend’s yellow tattered cloak showed a gap, revealing a faint, mysterious dark light emitting from the surface of the shadow gem.
He tugged at the edge of the cloth near the gap and headed towards the cabin door.
