Chapter 208: Jesse’s Good Friend
The elf closed his eyes and started chanting a spell. Jesse noticed that the lake was starting to glow slightly, it was definitely the power of Arcane, without a doubt. And there were faint traces of Arcane energy moving around in the forest too.
The wind picked up even stronger now, Jesse was sure it was the elf’s magic stirring up the air currents.
Before long, he heard strange calls coming from the forest, he wasn’t sure if they were animals or just the wind… he couldn’t tell what it was, but it seemed like the whole Quel’danil surrounding forest was becoming restless.
Suddenly, a familiar sensation brushed past his ears and neck, reminding him of the power he felt draining from that sheep in Elwynn Forest when he tried Life Drain.
Could it be that the elf was trying to drain life energy using Arcane, and the forest around was the one being drained?
The scale of this was indeed a bit frightening.
Looking at Vernal, he had gathered a ball of milky white energy in his hand, the energy was swirling in his palm and emitting a faint green glow in the night.
His expression didn’t look relaxed at all, as if he was facing a much stronger force, and the energy in his hand didn’t seem to be obedient, he appeared to be forcing the energy to obey his commands, to do his bidding instead of guiding it.
The plant scientists of Quel’Thalas are also mages, but while most mages manipulate elements using Arcane magic, they manipulate life using Arcane magic.
When Jesse listened to Kaffir describing these people, he thought he understood, but it was only when he actually saw a mage controlling the power of life that he realized the difference was quite large.
The power of life wasn’t as obedient as he imagined, but constantly resisted the plant scientists’ control, yet they couldn’t resist the oppression of the powerful arcane energy manipulated by these archmages, with more and more life energy surrendering to Vernal’s will.
Ripples started to appear on the surface of the pond, Jesse wasn’t sure if it was caused by the wind or by magic.
The Dragonhawk perched on the tree no longer paid attention to what was happening in the forest, instead, it stared intently at the plant scientist.
In stark contrast to the restless forest and swirling air currents, it showed no surprise or fear from start to finish, the only movement being its long feathers trembling in the fierce wind.
Looking back at Greed, he remained completely still.
Was he being held in place by some spell from the plant scientist? Or was he just incredibly calm?
Just as Jesse watched Greed’s reaction, Vernal suddenly stopped and directed the life energy towards Greed’s head, the air around them instantly quieted down, and the forest ceased its agitation.
In that moment, Jesse heard Greed snoring, realizing that he had fallen asleep.
"Okay," Jesse rubbed his cheek, realizing that it had been quite a while. He had no idea how many more steps Vernal had to take or how long the whole process would continue.
After the grand procession had passed, the now quiet and still scene made Jesse feel a bit overwhelmed.
All the excitement from the afternoon had truly worn him out.
With that thought, he tilted his head and collapsed to the ground.
In the morning, the sunlight of Hinterlands shone on his face. Jesse woke up by the water’s edge, realizing he had fallen asleep there.
There was nobody in the small square of Quel’danil. Jesse got up, checked if he had lost anything from his luggage, and then sleepily walked towards the palace.
"Excuse me, where is Master Vernal Dayseeker?" Jesse asked the guard in front of him.
"He left not long ago, human," the elf pointed into the distance. "Your friend is in that forest, don’t forget to return Valindra Swiftblade’s bow. She reminded me several times."
"Valindra… Okay, I remember."
Jesse nodded and glanced behind the palace’s fence, only to discover that the Dragonhawk he had seen resting there before was now gone. Heading towards the direction pointed by the elf, he entered the forest. After a few steps, he heard the sound of an arrow piercing into a tree with a "whoosh."
"Greed?"
"This way."
Jesse walked towards the sound and saw a dwarf aiming a bow at a tree beside him.
With a "whoosh," an arrow struck the tree trunk. When Jesse went to retrieve the arrow, he noticed the messy hole left by the arrow.
He looked at Greed and saw that the dwarf was not wearing an eyepatch, but instead staring at him with both eyes.
For a moment, Jesse felt like the dwarf was becoming somewhat unfamiliar. It was strange to see him looking at Jesse with both eyes, as if there was suddenly an extra piece on his head, which seemed very mismatched.
"Give me the arrow, Jesse," Greed beckoned, saying, "Let me show you…"
Jesse nodded, handing him the arrow and asking, "How do you feel?"
"How do you feel?"
Greed laughed, took a few steps back, looked at the tree, and his expression suddenly turned cold.
He shot the arrow without much aim, no hesitation. The arrow flew through the air with a sharp sound, hitting the already riddled tree, making it sway as if it couldn’t hold on much longer.
"If I meet that Orc now, it wouldn’t be good, Jesse Seso."
Greed sounded a bit fierce, with a cold face looking at Jesse, saying, "That darn guy, I really want to fight him again."
"You’re too caught up in that." Jesse said, "Maybe he’s even dead by now."
"It would be best if he’s dead." Greed said, "Otherwise, I will make him understand that a Dwarf Wildhammer’s grudge is far scarier than Gul’dan’s curse."
Jesse swallowed, saying, "He still hasn’t understood, but I can almost feel it."
Greed said, "Come here."
"What for?" Jesse walked over.
"Bend down."
"Okay."
Greed suddenly hugged Jesse’s shoulders, then punched him in the back, making Jesse almost spit blood.
This guy not only regained his sight, but also became much stronger.
"My good buddy, Jesse, I never thought I would see with this eye again until I met you. I truly never thought so. Without you, I could never have come this far."
He let go and grabbed Jesse’s collar, saying, "No matter what troubles come our way, no matter how scary the dangers are, Orcs, Ogres, Black Dragons, Red Dragons, any kind of dragon, just say the word, even if it means charging into the Dark Portal without hesitation."
"No need to be so dramatic. I plan to buy a house for my parents in Goldshire or Stormwind, so maybe help me out with some money when the time comes," Jesse said.
"Ah-choo! Ah-choo! Ah-choo!"
Greed suddenly choked and coughed several times in a row, sounding like he was about to cough out his lungs.
He leaned on a small tree nearby, holding his neck and struggled to say, "That elf, um! Did he cast a shadow spell in the magic? So he is essentially a warlock… We’ve been fooled, darn it!"
Jesse sighed and said, "Is it necessary…"
Greed looked up and said, "If you buy a house for your parents but need someone else’s money, then isn’t your sincerity compromised, Jesse? Your parents won’t be happy either."
"I will definitely pay you back, but in case I run out of time to help…"
"I understand, let’s discuss it more! So, let’s hurry up and find the gryphon! Let’s go back to Southshore!"
"What about the Dark Portal? Didn’t you say we could rush into the Dark Portal too?"
"So what does buying a house have to do with the Dark Portal?"
"You… By the way, your bow! Give the bow back to those elves."
"No need to give it back! She owes me."
