Chapter 207: Residents of Quel’danil
The Dragonhawk was gazing towards the northern forest at this moment. Every now and then, a sound of an unknown creature in the forest would make its feathers tremble, causing it to try to climb higher, stretching out its not-so-long neck as if wanting to investigate.
But every time it made a move, a nearby elven guard would shake the spear in their hand, signaling it to be quiet. Sometimes, this giant bird even tried to peck at the soldier’s spear, angrily making a series of whooshing sounds.
This is a unique creature of Quel’Thalas. Jesse had read about this animal in the animal encyclopedia in Malin’s study.
Some speculate that they are hybrids born from hidden dragons disguised as elves in Quel’Thalas mating with giant eagles. Others say that they are magical creatures transformed by the energy radiation of the Sunwell, local predatory birds of Quel’Thalas.
In any case, here Jesse could more intuitively feel why this monster is called a "Dragonhawk", whether it’s in appearance, behavior, or size, it indeed looks like a mix of these two creatures.
Two strangers appeared and caught the attention of some elves on the street. Two elves playing flutes for fun and their audience stopped to look over.
Watching a female elf head towards the hall, Jesse heard another female elf whispering with her companion, asking strange questions. Another female elf glanced at Jesse, giggled, and didn’t answer. Soon after, the nearby male elves started mocking him, making him feel uncomfortable.
Walking into the hall, he grumbled, "It seems like there are few elves here who can fight, and not many guards. I wonder how they would defend themselves if trolls really broke through the forest and came here."
"That’s just their surface appearance," Greed whispered. "Let me tell you a story about Quel’danil. Do you want to hear?"
"Go on."
"I remember when I was young, a female elf commander from Quel’danil was captured by trolls, skinned alive and hung on a stone pillar in the eastern troll ruins to intimidate them. After the elves from Quel’danil rescued her, they hung a beautiful elf cloth bag decorated with flowers, filled with fresh and dried troll genitalia."
"Trolls… How do you know so much about them?" Jesse asked.
"Because it wasn’t trolls who discovered it first, but a group of our scouts," Greed said. "The first person to open that package was called Truden, I still remember his name. Poor guy, a few years later he was stabbed in the chest by a troll, as he was dying, his mind was blurry, muttering that at least he wouldn’t have to dream about that bag anymore."
Jesse imagined the contents of that package, feeling a bit confused, and asked, "Is it true or false…"
"Is it one hundred percent true? I’m not sure. The elves don’t agree, but that bag is definitely not ours," whispered Greed. "And that elf leader didn’t die, she was saved, they say she used the water from the Sunwell, just to stop the troll from succeeding."
After listening to this little story, Jesse looked back at the elves outside who were chatting and laughing, feeling a shiver down his spine.
Upstairs in the elf hall, an elf in a deep red robe was arranging her flower crown.
He was very tall, towering over a guard nearby, looking strong and mighty. His physique was also quite sturdy, broad-shouldered and muscular, not like the typical High Elves, more resembling the impression Jesse had of Night Elves.
"Mr. Greed Thunderfist and Mr. Jesse Seso." The elf turned around, waving his hand to signal the guards to step back.
"I am Vernal from the Sunseeker Temple, Mrs. Vereesa Windrunner must have introduced me to you before, right?" He glanced at the dwarf and said, "She asked me to wait here during your Feast of Winter Veil, I have been waiting for many days, I cannot stay for the entire festival."
"I am really sorry," Jesse said. "Because most of the time we walked from Dalaran here… only rode horses from Alterac to Durnholde, so it took a long time."
"Ms. Vereesa should have sent two Dragonhawk knights to bring you here, but Dalaran… nevermind," Vernal shook his head. "If you had come two days later, I would have had to return to Silvermoon City."
"So, Grand Elf, what should we do?" Greed asked anxiously.
"Let me see first."
Vernal walked up and gently touched Greed’s forehead, taking off the tightly wrapped eye mask.
Greed felt extremely uncomfortable being touched by a male elf, instinctively wanting to break free but restraining himself from moving too much.
"I don’t have much experience treating dwarfs," Vernal examined the bad eye of the dwarf while saying, "but I have treated two Bronzebeard Dwarfs before. The 200 years of separation wouldn’t make a fundamental difference between your two tribes, right?"
"I’m taller than them, does that count as a difference?" Greed asked.
"In my opinion, there’s not much of a difference," Vernal replied.
Greed stared at Jesse, who shook his head helplessly, thinking to himself, what are you going to do, do you want me to help you beat him up?
Vernal opened the nearby cabinet and took out a green cloak. Jesse noticed that the layers of decorations on the cloak were actually real leaves, with no sign of decay, as if they were naturally growing on it.
He gently shook the cloak and draped it over himself, no dry leaves or twigs fell off. The leaves in his hands looked softer than fabric or wool.
"Follow me," Vernal said as he walked towards a spiral staircase.
The two followed, coming down the spiral staircase to a terrace in the hall, which was already above the pond outside.
The elf walked down the terrace, leading the dwarf to the lakeside. This place was quiet and deserted, even the guards didn’t stop here. Besides the calm lake, there was a peaceful forest nearby.
He paced back and forth for a while, finally stopping on a protruding stone slab at the shore.
"Dwarf, no matter what happens later, do not move. Lie down calmly here," Vernal said.
Greed nodded, jumped onto the stone slab, lay down, clasping his hands tightly to his pants seam, closing his eyes tightly. He looked just like a mummy.
Jesse instinctively took two steps back and sat on a nearby blue stone, watching the situation from afar.
"Things would be much simpler if we were in the Evergreen Forest."
Vernal muttered to himself, raising his hands in front of his chest. Jesse suddenly felt a cool breeze blowing past his ears. He didn’t know if it was a coincidence or related to the elf’s gestures.
