Chapter 204: What Have We Saved?
"Looking at the shape of this cocoon, it doesn’t seem like one of your kind, Greed," Jesse whispered.
"I’ve noticed that too, darn it," Greed scratched his head and thought for a while before saying, "This elf should fetch at least 50 silver. We’ll bring him to Quel’danil and let those folks pay for his release."
"Is 50 silver too little? Those elves are rich," Jesse said. "We should ask for at least two gold coins."
"Ask? Your words sound harsh, it’s clearly a commission," the dwarf felt the wall and found a bumpy spot to hold onto, saying, "However, we need to first open it up and see if it looks good or not. Elves won’t spend much to ransom a crooked companion, regardless of their gender."
Jesse swallowed nervously, feeling like this was too real.
Greed climbed up the wall’s relief and cut the hanging spider silk with a dagger. The cocoon fell to the ground with a thud, making an excited and noisy sound from inside.
The dwarf jumped down and exclaimed, "This fellow is quite lively! He has been stuck here for so long, yet he is still full of energy."
"Elves can live if they have magic."
While Jesse used the Light Spell to help light up the area, the dwarf carefully cut through layers of silk with a knife. After cutting open a few layers, some green hair was revealed…
Greed stood up, sighed, and said, "A wasted trip."
Suddenly, he raised his hammer and smashed it on the wriggling head. The person inside the cocoon made no sound and went silent. Bright red blood seeped out from between the strands of silk.
Before Jesse could even react, he paused for a second and said, "This…"
"Oh, I forgot," Greed raised his eyebrows and said, "You mentioned wanting a female troll earlier. It’s a shame, I accidentally killed her."
Jesse looked at the green, grass-like rough long hair and said, "You’re too quick, I haven’t even figured it out yet… Are you sure this is a troll? Could it be an elf dyed its hair?"
Greed shook his head and said, "Don’t worry, elves would never dye their hair to look like a Forest Troll. But it explains why this guy is so strong, trolls are usually very strong. It’s just a shame about my money."
"Let me see." Jesse curiously said, "I haven’t seen a troll before."
Greed nodded, used a small knife to cut through several layers of web, revealing a blue face with small fangs, blood around the nose, eyes, and mouth, resembling a little like a human but also like a strange mix of a lion cub.
"You’re not feeling sorry for a troll, are you?" Greed asked, looking at Jesse’s frowning face.
"This is quite a sad death…" Jesse mumbled.
"If you’ve seen rows of spears with various skinned heads impaled on them, you wouldn’t think she’s that pitiful." Greed said, "Anyway, she will die, and I won’t save her. In the end, she will be slowly eaten by spiders. Giving her a hammer is actually mercy, don’t you think so?"
"That’s true," Jesse said, "I mainly think you should cut open the web some more."
Greed widened his eyes and said, "You really need to find a wife, Jesse. Keeping it all in for so long can make you go crazy. I think you’re starting to go beyond my understanding."
Jesse helplessly said, "Are you crazy? Why would you want to cut open a dead body to look for coins or something? Even if I really wanted to mess with a female troll, I shouldn’t disrespect the dead! And at the very least, not now, not here."
"Hmm… oh, right." Greed suddenly understood, nodded, and prepared to continue cutting spider silk.
Jesse leaned in to take a look, but the dwarf suddenly stopped moving.
"What’s wrong?"
Greed looked behind Jesse and shouted, "Be careful!"
Just as he spoke, Jesse turned around and saw a giant bug head with four pairs of eyes, almost as big as his upper body, emerging from the murky shadows illuminated by a dim Light Spell.
Long, slender legs extended from the shadows, tapping against the walls and floor as the creature crawled forward. Jesse felt a shiver down his spine and instinctively pointed at the giant spider monster taller than him.
He cast a Fear spell, extinguishing the Light Spell, and the spider let out a piercing sound before retreating back into the shadows.
"Move aside!"
Greed burst out from behind Jesse, jumped towards a similar spot in the dark, and swung the hammer to hit right between the rows of eyes of the spider.
The flickering electric light sparked for a moment, followed by a deep thud like a watermelon splitting open. The spider made a grumbling sound and collapsed to the ground.
The long and hairy-legged spider struggled back and forth. Greed dodged a leg sweeping towards him, took a few steps back, and Jesse cast another Light Spell to illuminate the scene. The spider seemed to be finished, only its limbs twitching continuously.
"It’s a mother spider," Greed gasped, saying, "It’s nothing serious… Her feet are quite powerful though."
He made a stabbing motion with his hand, chuckled, and said, "It can pierce through your head in an instant."
"You startled me," Jesse said.
"You’ve made progress this time, at least your Fear didn’t accidentally hit me," Greed said while gesturing, clearly excited from just smashing a giant spider with a single blow.
However, Jesse felt increasingly uneasy. The dead spider behind the dwarf kept twitching for what seemed like too long. Beyond the range illuminated by the Light Spell, there seemed to be a dark and oppressive force creeping towards them. Jesse said, "Forget about that troll, we should leave…"
Greed turned his head and saw several palm-sized baby spiders crawling down from their mother’s head, their pincers trembling uncontrollably towards Greed.
"Run!" Jesse tapped Greed’s shoulder with the magic wand and said, "Hurry! Can’t you hear the spiders crawling towards us?"
With a yelp, Greed started running, but when they reached the tunnel entrance, they found it covered with countless tiny spiders.
The spiders were diving towards them, making eerie noises, and the sound of their legs hitting the walls became so loud that nothing else could be heard!
"They’re forcing me…"
Greed said, as his warhammer suddenly burst with a series of bright lights, overshadowing Jesse’s Light Spell!
The lightning’s brightness and crackling sound pierced through the tunnel in an instant, filling the air with a burnt smell.
Stepping on piles of dead spiders, the two climbed up, with Greed running faster and Jesse focusing on holding the Light Spell with his magic wand. He kept an eye on the spiders behind them, ready to use the Fear spell as a last resort, but to his surprise, all he heard was a scream.
Before Jesse could figure out what was happening, he felt himself falling into a soft and sticky trap, his feet leaving the ground uncontrollably. The Light Spell went out instantly, and despite struggling, he couldn’t break free… It was a spider web trap.
