Chapter 201: Gryphon’s Drool
Jesse was very hungry and looking for some food to eat. He was hoping for some roasted meat, maybe even wolf meat, wild boar, or some bread.
While scanning the counter, Jesse heard some crackling noises coming from the side.
Then he noticed a bearded dwarf sitting to his left, who seemed quite drunk. The dwarf was half asleep, squinting at Jesse and scratching the table with his nails, making a scratching sound.
Jesse was confused and thought the dwarf might be ill. Another dwarf across from him cursed and stuffed a plate of pear-like fruits at the scratching spot. The drunk dwarf grabbed one and started chewing on it, finally stopping the scratching noises.
While chewing the fruit, the dwarf surprisingly spoke in the common language, saying, "Let me tell you, human, there is another human in Aerie Peak…"
"Huh?" Jesse asked, "What do you mean, are you saying that humans live in Aerie Peak?"
"Of course!" The dwarf said before lying down under the table.
Aerie Peak is so big, and it’s not strange for people to live there after the Orc War. Maybe it’s a human ambassador or someone important from the human kingdom.
"Don’t listen to his crazy talk!" Greed said, "He doesn’t even know what he’s saying. Don’t hesitate, hurry and eat, hurry and eat, or it will be gone…" Jesse nodded, about to act, but suddenly a hand like a stone grabbed his arm.
He turned around and saw a small angry-looking person staring at him.
The small person pointed at Jesse, gritting his teeth, making noises with his lips, but couldn’t say a word for a while.
Jesse tried to turn to ask Greed for help, but the small person quickly turned his head back, almost making Jesse dizzy.
The small person pointed at Jesse’s nose, his lips trembling and then moving as if trying to speak.
Just as Jesse tried to touch Greed, the small person suddenly started speaking a lot of strange words, then kept saying "ah?", "ah?", asking something, but Jesse couldn’t understand at all, feeling like the small person really disliked him.
Was his secret as a magic user discovered? Impossible, he had hidden his magic tools with Greed, had they been found?
The small person kept questioning and finally Greed seemed to understand, leaning closer.
"He wants to know… why are you so tall."
"Huh?!"
Jesse looked down at Greed, who stuck his head out, and it seemed like he was a bit drunk too.
What are these Wildhammers drinking? Why are they getting drunk so quickly? He glanced at the cups on the table, and in front of him there was already a full cup, and another half full.
"Ouch!" The dwarf in front of him hit Jesse on the head so hard that he almost passed out. Then he spilled out a bunch of Dwarven language. Greed burped and said, "He wants to ask you if you’ve been stealing gryphon food."
"How should I answer?"
"I… will talk to him!"
Greed grabbed the man’s collar, punched him, and knocked him under the table.
"All right, he understands now." Greed sat on the ground, burped again, and pointed at the drink in front of Jesse, saying, "Hurry up, drink it or we’ll all run away!"
"Can drinks run?"
Jesse turned around and found out the drink was gone, it was full just a moment ago, now only half a cup was left?
Originally a little scared of the strong drink, but because of the mysterious disappearance of a cup, a strange possessiveness of not wanting to be robbed again suddenly emerged from the bottom of the heart. So, he just picked up this cup and took a big gulp.
Oh my goodness, Jesse was so surprised, what’s going on?
Greed looked at Jesse’s miserable appearance and burst into laughter. He lay on Jesse’s legs, pointing at the cup of drink and said, "gryphon’s saliva…"
Jesse heard this word and cursed, then jumped up and pushed Greed to the ground. He ran all the way to the railing outside the hall, leaning over the cliff of hundreds of meters, retching for a while, but nothing came out!
"No… no!" Greed roared, "I mean, gryphon also likes to drink, also craves this! Seeing it also drools!"
"Nonsense!" Jesse shouted, "Can gryphon still fly after drinking?!"
Greed chuckled and said, "You caught me!"
Jesse was completely speechless and then dry heaved.
But thinking about the taste of that drink just now, it didn’t smell like the usual stinky animal saliva. It was indeed a very strong and fragrant smell of wine.
A scary thought came up, could this be the gryphon’s mouth-juice?
He glanced at the entire Wildhammer city on the cliff, the torchlight that lit up in the middle of the night all turned into shadows, just like the strength of this sip.
Why did I come here?
What am I here for?
What kind of place is this exactly?
Why… do I still want another sip?
Jesse turned around and looked at that drink on the table.
At that moment, a dwarf stumbled onto the table and grabbed the cup.
"Let go!" Jesse yelled in Language Orcish.
The dwarf suddenly froze, and his grip on the cup loosened.
Jesse walked over step by step, picked up the cup, and took another sip.
This wine is really refreshing…
He burped sitting on the stool, then picked up a piece of meat that he didn’t know what animal it was, tore off a piece and stuffed it into his mouth, with oil at the corners of his mouth.
To soothe the greasiness, he took another sip of wine.
To balance the wine, he took another bite of meat.
To soothe the greasiness…
After a few rounds, Jesse began to feel even more uneasy.
The wine felt like gentle warm water, melting his awareness of everything around him. The hard things like stones, tables, armor, bones, all suddenly seemed soft and lovely, as if covered in a halo of light.
The noisy, dancing dwarves happily gathered around him, shouting, "Great King Jesse Seso!" and singing excitedly while holding hands in a circle.
Hmm, ah!
Hmm, ah!
Greetings, Hinterlands!
We’re new here, don’t mind our mistakes! Bears by the river, wolves by the lake!
Oh, the endless forest, livelier than Khaz Modan!
Bring me a bowl, bring me a spoon,
Let me taste what this is!
Ouch…
Ouch…
In the Hinterlands, these mushrooms are strange.
Why eat them if they’re strange?
But this soup tastes amazing!
Without gold or jewels,
In the forest, eyes watch, and the wind is cold like a knife!
Ha! Hey!
Ha! Hey!
But in the Hinterlands, this is the den of gryphons and wanderers! We dig mountains, we dig holes, we don’t know manners! We eat meat, we drink alcohol, we have a bad temper! Don’t ask us why we speak Chinese, just imagine it in your own mind!
