Chapter 199: Whose Fault Is It Anyway
On their way back, Greed was like a different person, passionately describing how he felt on the cliff to Jesse, saying he had wanted to talk to the elements before, how disappointed those Sages were, and Jesse was almost able to recite every word, even the snippets of Dwarven language that occasionally popped up.
However, despite summoning the power of lightning with the hammer, it was still important to return what belonged to someone else.
Greed and Jesse crossed several stone-carved pathways to reach the hall of another clan, where they found the wife of a Gryphon Rider named Kaden Grayfeather, as directed by the Sage.
Jesse couldn’t understand the conversation between the two people, but he couldn’t bear to see the wife crying so sadly. He couldn’t tell others about the family’s sad news, so he could only stare into the forest of Hinterlands from afar.
Soon, Greed walked over, took a deep breath, and said, "It’s finally delivered."
"So, where are you going to get a new one?" Jesse asked.
"Don’t you think I don’t have a hammer?"
"You still have your own hammer, why don’t you bring it out?"
"I’m not a Gryphon Rider anymore, why should I bring the Gryphon Rider’s war hammer?"
"So, now you…"
"Forget it," Greed waved his hand and said, "Come with me, let’s go back and get my hammer."
Back in the hall of Thunderfist, Greed led Jesse down a winding staircase and finally into a low room at the bottom of a dark cave.
This is too short, Jesse keeps hitting his head on it accidentally. He has to keep pushing the hood up to avoid bumping his head, or else he’ll definitely have bumps all over when he goes out later.
The space was dark and stuffy, with a strong smell of damp and rotten cloth. The other rooms seemed to have people living in them, but Greed’s room was wide open and deserted. It seemed like no one had been there for a long time, as dust covered everything. Aerie Peak’s security seemed to be good.
After entering the room, Greed rummaged through the dusty clutter for a while and finally pulled out a war hammer.
This hammer looked more like a regular hammer for nailing than a typical war hammer. The pointed end was even more exaggerated than the previous one.
Jesse had always thought Gryphon Rider war hammers were neat metal cubes, but here, there were all kinds of strange war hammers, and the plain cubes were actually the least common.
"This thing." Greed said as he lifted the hammer, "Last time, I tried using it in the same spot, but nothing happened. Maybe it’s just not a good match for me, that’s probably why the bat bit my thigh!"
"Show yourself now…" Greed hadn’t finished his sentence when a bright white electric spark suddenly burst out of the hammer, shooting around the narrow space, making the room chaotic. Jesse screamed and ran out in fear, Greed also screamed as he threw the hammer out, and the electric energy made the hammer fly wildly back and forth, chasing Jesse. Jesse had a hard time scrambling up the stairs, and after a while, everything below quieted down.
"Hey, are you dead?!" Jesse shouted.
At that moment, a red-clothed dwarf carrying a shield and holding a sword came running up the stairs and stared at Jesse.
"Humans? Why?"
"Good humans," Jesse said immediately standing straight.
Greed shouted a string of Dwarven language from below, the dwarf nodded and sheathed his sword, staring at Jesse while leaving the cave.
Greed came up carrying his hammer, muttering something in Dwarven language, Jesse saw him with his face full of exploded beard and hair.
"Doesn’t this prove that it’s not your hammer that’s at fault, but it was you who wasn’t good enough back then?" Jesse asked.
"Shut up…" Greed snapped with a toothy grin, "Why wasn’t it working before but works now?"
Jesse pondered for a moment and said, "Maybe to become a truly powerful Gryphon Rider, you need to go through some experiences, don’t you think?"
"So, what experience did I go through?"
Greed sat angrily on the ground, sighed heavily, and exhaled a puff of smoke and dust from his mouth.
"That depends on how you were before," Jesse said, "before you got hurt."
"Oh…" Greed leaned on the stairs’ stone railing, looked up at the not-so-high ceiling, and said, "It’s really different from now."
"Back then, I… I thought I would one day become the greatest Gryphon Rider, a legend of Khaz Modan and Hinterlands, like Kadros Wildhammer or a Mountain King… even if the elemental forces didn’t answer my call, I could prove myself with my fighting skills, my sharp senses, and my strong power. Perhaps I overestimated myself, no, no need for perhaps, I just wasn’t that strong."
"Maybe the elements thought you were really asking for it back then, that’s why they didn’t respond to you," Jesse asked.
"So these elements have the temper of a child," Greed said, "then if I do something they don’t like in the future, will they just refuse to answer my call again?"
Jesse said, "Why do you think those Sages, or Shamans of other races, have to train their character, understand the temper of the elements, and stay humble? Isn’t that because the elements have a bad temper? You can be patient with a Wildkin and not provoke it, but you’re impatient with such powerful elemental forces."
"If I provoke a Wildkin, it would really slap me," Greed said.
"If you upset the elements, they won’t help you in battle. Which price is higher, I can’t say," Jesse said.
"Hmm…" Greed’s beard twitched, he slowly lowered his head to think for a while, then suddenly said, "And what about you, Jesse Seso, what kind of person were you in the past?"
"I have only lived for eighteen years, what kind of past could I have? I’m probably just a clueless child," Jesse casually replied.
"Only eighteen years old," Greed smirked, "Your words don’t sound like something a seventeen or eighteen-year-old would say. It has a hint of an old man lecturing a child. Normally, people would say: ‘I’m already seventeen, old enough, I’m an adult! I want to go to the forest to kill trolls with you guys!’"
"Maybe it’s because when I’m with you outside, if I don’t mature quickly, I’ll easily die," Jesse said.
"Oh, come on," Greed stood up and stretched lazily, "Are you hungry, Jesse? I’m hungry!"
"What do you think? I haven’t eaten anything since this morning," Jesse said helplessly, "I’ve been looking forward to feasting at your Aerie Peak for days, but you’re still unwilling."
"Well then, let’s go," Greed said, "Let’s go, let’s go, no harm in eating for free, we won’t spend any money!"
