Chapter 187: Setting Off Again
Early the next morning, Duchamp left for the west towards Silverpine. Jesse was waiting with luggage at the "Blue Meeting" while Greed soon joined them.
"I’ve contacted a team from the church," Greed said as he approached Jesse. He was about to continue speaking but noticed some pastries on a cloth beside where Jesse was seated.
These things look expensive. What fruits are these? Are they berries?
"They were bought by someone else," Jesse said as he picked up half a strawberry tart and took a bite. He chewed and said, "Sit down, I’ll show you a magic trick."
"What spell have you learned now?" asked the dwarf.
Jesse glanced at him, only then remembering that magic tricks weren’t as interesting in the Azeroth world.
So he cut to the chase and said, "Alchemy to turn silver into gold."
"Turning silver into gold?" the dwarf chuckled, placing two silver coins on the table and sitting across from Jesse, saying, "Come, change these two into gold coins. Oh no, transform them into gold coins."
"Just two? You underestimate me," Jesse said.
The dwarf raised an eyebrow, then picked up 20 silver coins from the table. Jesse said, "That’s too many, it requires magical energy to use, just put down 10."
"Alright." Greed took 10 and said, "Change."
Jesse looked at the 12 silver coins and said slowly, "Oh, 12 should do as well."
Greed stared at Jesse’s hand and lips with a smirk. Jesse snapped his fingers with his right hand, his lips moved, and suddenly a bright light shone out, making Greed squint his eyes.
"No more spellcasting in the shop, my dear masters!" the shopkeeper shouted, "If you cast spells randomly again, I will call the guards!"
"I’m sorry, it won’t happen again."
Jesse finished speaking and smiled awkwardly.
Looking down, Greed seemed bewildered.
Jesse glanced at the 12 gold coins on the table and pretended, "By all that is holy, it actually worked, I thought it would fail!"
Greed chuckled and tapped the table, saying, "Give me back those shiny silver coins! The faces on them are all different!"
"You’re so boring." Jesse took back the silver coins and placed them on the table, saying, "Let’s split it unequally, you take 7, I’ll take 5, sound good?"
"Is this the money from selling the order to kill Gorefiend?" Greed asked.
"Sold it to the elves." Jesse said, "After that meeting, especially after the theft incident, that letter is no longer just a guide to Orcish language, Greed, its value has soared!"
"To sell for so much money…" the dwarf scratched his chin under his beard for a while before saying, "Then you can keep that Gurubashi gold coin."
"If you keep it, you’ll be at a bigger loss." Jesse reminded him, "I already gave you a slightly larger share than I should."
"Did I really split the coins with you?" Greed laughed, counting seven coins and stuffing them into his pocket, saying, "Let’s just split it this way! Oh well, time to live the good life! What should I buy? It’s so frustrating, leaving Dalaran today, and there’s nothing good to buy in Alterac, Durnholde, or Aerie Peak!"
"Be thrifty and spend when we get back to Stormwind," Jesse reminded him.
"How about I buy you some clothes?" Greed suggested, "We’re going up the snowy mountain soon. Climbing a snow mountain in winter with just that shirt and cloak of yours? You won’t freeze up there, will you?"
"I almost forgot," Jesse pinched his collar feeling its thickness. The clothes were already cold in Dalaran in December, let alone climbing snow mountains towards the northeast.
Greed said, "The church convoy leaves at 9 o’clock. We have about an hour left, let’s hurry to buy, or we’ll have to borrow their clothes halfway."
They immediately packed their things and went to find a clothing store. In the end, they spent 5 silver coins to buy Jesse a brown leather jacket and thick pants, feeling like walking into the store in summer and running out from winter.
The weather quickly turned cold in the past week or two. Silverpine, which was deep green when they first arrived here, now looked quite bleak. As The Feast of Winter Veil was approaching, the dwarves were heading home. Outside the southern city station, there were many dwarves and Gnomes. If it wasn’t for coming here, one wouldn’t have known there were so many dwarves in Dalaran.
Perhaps because the dwarf village of Dun Baldar in Alterac was not as lively and rich in resources as Dalaran, after the war, many dwarves liked to come down the mountain to join the humans on this side for fun.
Right now, Jesse was wearing a brownish-red cloak, holding a magic wand wrapped in dark tattered yellow cloth, sitting with a bag under a stone by a pine tree.
With his beard untrimmed these past few days, curls of hair on his lips, he stared blankly at the group of priests from the Holy Light Church not far away, truly resembling a homeless wild mage.
"Greed," he turned to ask, "can you smell something strange?"
"What strange smell?" Greed chewed on snacks bought from Remy Starminder.
"It’s like bodies or shadows." Jesse asked.
Greed suddenly stopped chewing and looked at Jesse’s bag, asking, "What else are you hiding?"
Jesse pointed to the top of his magic wand and said, "This piece of cloth is Teron Gorefiend’s cloak."
"You – How come," Greed exclaimed, "Why didn’t you say earlier? I even found a group from the church! If those priests find out, they’ll kick you off the team!"
"Probably not, I just said I defeated a Death Knight and reused some stuff, and I wasn’t lying, I really did defeat a Death Knight," Jesse said. "I just wanted to avoid trouble, can you keep it quiet?"
"Can’t smell anything," Greed said, "You sure like to exaggerate, using a cloth from Gul’dan’s apprentice as a wrap, I might brag about this later."
Jesse chuckled and said, "Maybe in the future, even Teron Gorefiend’s ghost will boast to others, like how archmage Jesse wrapped his magic wand with my cloak back then."
"Ha! You sure have some wild thoughts!" Greed covered the invisible eyes with a clean piece of cloth, laughing loudly. "Instead of that, consider wooing Vereesa Windrunner! Come on, move your butt, the church priests are about to set off."
Hearing this, Jesse’s smile faded, he lowered his head and checked his belongings once more.
Including everything from the Faerie Dragon tentacle fur he gave to Amy Malin, all the books, money pouch, clothes, snacks bought by his parents, treats bought by wealthy people, etc., he made sure nothing was left out before standing up.
He patted his bottom and cloak to get rid of the dirt with one hand, looking at the dwarf’s back carrying a big woven bag, silently thinking, "Three months ago when I said we were going to slay a real dragon, did you think I was just fantasizing, Greed?"
